Exploring the Alpine Charm of Trentino-Alto Adige with My Spouse
Day 2: A Day of Castles and Waterfalls: Exploring Trentino's Hidden Gems
Discover the enchanting Castel Thun and the refreshing Cascata di Tret in Trentino-Alto Adige with my husband, Habibullah.
Whispers of History and Nature's Embrace
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of historical grandeur and the serene embrace of nature. Trentino-Alto Adige continues to surprise me with its hidden gems, each corner whispering stories of the past and showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the present. I'm so grateful to be sharing these moments with Habibullah, as we uncover the soul of this region together.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Adige. While the restaurant wasn't exactly serving traditional Afghan dishes, it was a delightful start to the day. We enjoyed some fresh pastries and strong Italian coffee. It was a good way to fuel up for a day of exploration. As many of you know, I've always believed that food is an integral part of understanding a culture, and even a simple breakfast can offer insights into the local way of life.
After breakfast, we set off to Castel Thun. As we approached, the castle stood majestically atop a hill, overlooking the Val di Non. The architecture was impressive, a harmonious blend of elegance and strength. It felt as if we were stepping back in time, walking in the footsteps of the Thun family who resided here for centuries. I could almost imagine the lords and ladies of the past strolling through the gardens, their laughter echoing through the stone walls.

Exploring Castel Thun was like wandering through a living museum. The valuable furniture, the library with its ancient tomes, the stately rooms, and the armory—each corner held a piece of history. I was particularly fascinated by the majolica stoves, each one a work of art. Habibullah, with his keen eye for detail as a retired tailor, was equally impressed by the craftsmanship evident in every aspect of the castle's design.
History is not just a collection of dates and names; it's a tapestry woven with the threads of human experience, each thread telling a story of resilience, innovation, and the enduring spirit of humanity.
After immersing ourselves in the history of Castel Thun, we journeyed to Cascata di Tret. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the valley. As we arrived, the sound of rushing water filled the air, a refreshing contrast to the stoic silence of the castle. The path to the waterfall was a gentle descent through lush greenery, a welcome change of scenery. I was grateful I had remembered to bring my comfortable hiking boots.

The Cascata di Tret is truly a hidden gem. A 70-meter cascade of water amidst the Val di Non. The walk to the base of the waterfall was invigorating. The air was fresh and crisp, and the scenery was simply stunning. Stepping onto the wooden bridge with water gushing down was a fantastic experience. The power of nature was on full display, and it was a humbling experience to witness such raw beauty.
For lunch, we found ourselves at Forsterbräu Trento, drawn in by its promise of traditional Trentino cuisine and local beer. The restaurant, located in the heart of Trento, has been a symbol of quality and conviviality since 1906. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu was filled with dishes that celebrated the region's culinary heritage. Habibullah and I shared a hearty plate of canederli, a traditional bread dumpling dish, and savored the rich flavors of the local beer. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures.

The streets were bustling with locals and tourists alike, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. We stopped at Officina Gambrinus, a local bar known for its excellent selection of beers and cocktails. It was a lively spot, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and learning more about the city.

As someone who once faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture, I am grateful for the chance to share my experiences with others and inspire them to embrace the beauty of diversity and the joy of discovery. And of course, I am also grateful for a good night's sleep.
Before signing off, I must share a funny anecdote from our day. As we were leaving Castel Thun, Habibullah, ever the practical one, couldn't help but comment on the castle's heating system. Imagine the fuel bill for this place! he exclaimed, shaking his head. It was a humorous reminder that even amidst the grandeur of history, the everyday concerns of life still manage to find their way in. And with that, I bid you goodnight, dear readers. May your dreams be filled with adventures and your hearts with gratitude.
Tomorrow, we are having breakfast at Ristorante Il Libertino Trento, lunch at Antica Trattoria Al Volt, and dinner at Ai Vicoli. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings!
