Giardini and Lago: A Day of Wonders
Today was a day of pure enchantment, a seamless blend of manicured beauty and natural splendor. Trentino-Alto Adige continues to surprise and delight, offering experiences that soothe the soul and invigorate the senses. Today, Habibullah and I explored gardens that whispered tales of far-off lands and a lake that shimmered with the promise of tranquility.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Locanda Margon. The drive up was an adventure in itself, the winding roads offering glimpses of the vineyards and valleys below. The locanda, nestled amongst the vines, exuded rustic charm. We sat on the terrace, the morning sun warming our faces as we sipped strong, aromatic coffee and enjoyed freshly baked bread with local honey. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.
Giardini Trauttmansdorff: A World in Bloom
Our first stop was the Giardini Trauttmansdorff in Merano. Having heard so much about these gardens, I was eager to experience their beauty firsthand. From April to November, these gardens are open to the public, and I can understand why they are considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.
As we entered, we were immediately enveloped in a kaleidoscope of colors and scents. The gardens are laid out like an amphitheater, with themed sections showcasing plants from around the world. The manicured lawns and vibrant flowerbeds were a feast for the eyes. Habibullah, ever the patient companion, indulged my every whim as I stopped to photograph each new vista.
We wandered through the Italian garden, with its formal hedges and citrus trees, and then ventured into the exotic landscapes of the World Gardens, where plants from Asia, the Americas, and Africa thrived. I was particularly fascinated by the cactus and succulent garden, a stark contrast to the lush greenery that surrounded it. The sheer variety of plants was astounding, a testament to the care and dedication of the gardeners.
The beauty of nature lies not just in its grandeur, but in the intricate details that reveal themselves to those who take the time to look.
One of the highlights was the International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition, showcasing stunning images of gardens and plants from around the globe. It was inspiring to see how different cultures celebrate and interact with nature. The exhibition added another layer of appreciation to the already breathtaking surroundings. We also explored the Touriseum, which offered a fascinating look at the history of tourism. It was interesting to see how travel has evolved over the centuries and to reflect on our own journey through Trentino-Alto Adige.
As we strolled through the gardens, we came across various experience stations, art pavilions, and lookout platforms. Each offered a unique perspective and added to the overall sensory experience. I particularly enjoyed the botanical underworld, a hidden world beneath the surface that revealed the intricate root systems of various plants.

Lago Smeraldo: An Emerald Jewel
After a morning of floral immersion, we journeyed to Lago Smeraldo. The drive itself was picturesque, winding through charming villages and past rolling hills.
Lago Smeraldo, or Emerald Lake, is nestled in the upper Val di Non. It's an artificial lake created in 1964, and it certainly adds a touch of elegance to the alpine landscape. The lake wasn't very far from Fondo, and we could have walked along the Valle dei Molini, but we decided to drive instead. The tranquil emerald waters were mesmerizing, reflecting the surrounding forests and mountains. The lake is easily accessible, and we joined other visitors strolling along the walking trails, soaking in the scenic landscape.
The area around Lago Smeraldo is perfect for picnics, and we found a secluded spot by the shore to enjoy a simple lunch of bread, cheese, and fruit. The peaceful ambiance was a welcome respite from the crowds at the gardens. We watched as families laughed and played by the water's edge, their joy echoing through the valley.
I learned that you can also take the Burrone walk to get to the lake. It's a narrow gorge that connects the town to the lake, featuring a ravine carved by the Sass stream. It sounds like a beautiful walk, with footbridges and illuminated paths. Perhaps we'll try that tomorrow!

An Evening of Flavors
As evening approached, we made our way back towards Trento, our minds filled with the beauty of the day.
For dinner, we chose Terramia - Ristorante Mediterraneo. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with a menu that promised authentic Mediterranean flavors. We shared a selection of appetizers, savoring the fresh seafood and vibrant vegetables. For my main course, I chose the grilled fish, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Habibullah opted for the pasta, declaring it to be the best he had tasted in Italy. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel like valued guests.
To cap off the evening, we decided to try Anima Lounge & Fish bar. The atmosphere was lively and sophisticated, the perfect place for a nightcap. Habibullah enjoyed a glass of local wine, while I sipped a refreshing cocktail. As we sat there, listening to the music and watching the world go by, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today.
As I reflect on our day, I am struck by the diversity and beauty of Trentino-Alto Adige. From the meticulously curated gardens to the serene emerald waters of Lago Smeraldo, this region offers something for everyone. It is a place where nature and culture intertwine, creating a tapestry of experiences that will stay with me long after we have left.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Castello di Cles and Parco Naturale del Doss Trento. I am particularly excited about exploring Castello di Cles, a medieval castle that promises to transport us back in time. And perhaps we'll stop by Il Maso Dello Speck to sample some local delicacies. Until then, I bid you buona notte from this enchanting corner of Italy.
Join us as we explore the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, blending Italian charm and Alpine beauty.
