A Day of Andean Wonders

Today was a day of contrasts, from the stark beauty of the high-altitude Laguna Queushu to the vibrant culture of Huaraz. Aaliyah and I immersed ourselves in the natural wonders of Huascaran National Park and indulged in the local flavors, making memories that will last a lifetime. It's days like these that remind me why we traded the familiar comforts of Kelowna for the thrill of the unknown.

Our day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a quick breakfast at our campsite. The crisp mountain air invigorated us as we packed our essentials: camera, water bottles, and an extra layer for the unpredictable Andean weather. We were headed towards the ticket control for Park Nacional Huascaran.

The drive itself was an experience. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the Cordillera Blanca, its snow-capped peaks piercing the clear blue sky. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of nature's grandeur. Aaliyah, ever the photographer, was in her element, snapping away at every turn. I must admit, I was kicking myself for forgetting the binoculars; they would have been perfect for spotting some of the elusive wildlife that calls this park home. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

Reaching the Park Nacional Huascaran ticket control, we purchased our entrance tickets. It felt good knowing that our contribution would go towards the conservation of this incredible natural space. The process was smooth, and the park rangers were helpful, providing us with a map and some tips for our visit.

Our main destination for the day was Laguna Queushu, a hidden gem nestled high in the mountains.

The drive to the Laguna was challenging, but the scenery was worth every bump and turn. As we ascended, the landscape transformed from green valleys to rocky terrain, dotted with hardy shrubs and wildflowers.

Finally, we arrived at Laguna Queushu, and it was breathtaking. The turquoise waters reflected the surrounding peaks, creating a mirror image of stunning beauty. The air was still and quiet, save for the occasional cry of a bird overhead. Aaliyah and I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility wash over us. We even saw a few people trying their hand at paddleboarding on the serene waters.

Nature's beauty is a reminder to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the simple wonders around us.

After our fill of Laguna Queushu's beauty, we began our descent back towards Huaraz. Our stomachs were beginning to rumble, and we were both craving a hearty meal. Based on a recommendation from a fellow traveler, we decided to try Cafe Andino for breakfast.

Cafe Andino turned out to be a delightful surprise. The cafe had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with wooden décor and local artwork adorning the walls. We ordered a couple of burritos, and they were delicious. Aaliyah enjoyed a vegan option, while I opted for one with chicken. It was great to find a place that catered to both our dietary preferences. The coffee was excellent, too, a much-needed boost after our morning adventure.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the town of Huaraz. We strolled through the Plaza de Armas, admiring the colonial architecture and soaking in the local culture. The square was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily routines, and tourists like us, eager to discover the city's charms.

Aaliyah, ever the fashion enthusiast, was keen on checking out Violeta Fashion Boutique.

I must admit, I'm not much of a shopper, but I was happy to tag along and offer my (limited) fashion advice. The boutique was a treasure trove of unique clothing and accessories, showcasing local designs and craftsmanship. Aaliyah ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind her of our time in Peru.

As lunchtime approached, we found ourselves at Callejón restaurante Huaraz, drawn in by the enticing aromas wafting from its kitchen.

The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the menu featured a tempting array of Peruvian dishes. I decided to try the lomo saltado, a classic stir-fry dish with beef, onions, and peppers, while Aaliyah opted for the quinoa power bowl, a healthy and flavorful option. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the chef's skill and the freshness of the ingredients.

For dinner, we wanted something a bit more casual, so we headed to Mi Comedia - Pizzeria.

After weeks of traditional Peruvian food (as amazing as it is), sometimes you just crave a good pizza. We ordered a large margherita pizza to share, and it hit the spot perfectly. The crust was crispy, the sauce was tangy, and the cheese was gooey and delicious. It was the perfect comfort food to end a day of adventure.

As we walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the breathtaking beauty of Laguna Queushu to the vibrant culture of Huaraz, it had been a day of discovery and delight. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world with my amazing wife by my side.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our adventure in Huascaran National Park. We plan to visit Cabaña de laguna Cancaragá and Antaracá, hoping to soak in every last bit of natural beauty before we head back to Kelowna. We're also planning to grab a farewell dinner at Wayta - El Chef Andino, and maybe even check out Craft Beer House for a nightcap. It's bittersweet, but I know we'll be leaving with memories that will last a lifetime.

Until then, good night from the Andes!
