Icelandic Sagas and Volcanic Whispers

Today was a day of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty as we ventured deeper into the heart of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From towering basalt columns to the fiery depths of a volcanic crater, and the tranquil embrace of a swan-filled fjord, it felt like Iceland was determined to showcase its full spectrum of wonders. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel in the first place – the sheer unpredictability and the constant unveiling of nature's artistry.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Snaefellsnes. I always appreciate a good start to the day, especially when it includes local cuisine. Fuelled up, we set off to conquer our first destination: the Eldborg Crater Trailhead.

The drive itself was a treat, winding through landscapes that seemed plucked from the pages of a saga. As we approached Eldborg, the crater loomed in the distance, a perfectly symmetrical cone rising from the surrounding lava fields. The hike to the crater's base was relatively easy, a gentle stroll across moss-covered terrain, but the climb to the rim was a different story altogether. It was steep, and the wind threatened to steal my breath, but the chains provided along the way were a welcome assistance.

Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a panoramic view that stretched for miles. The crater itself was an awe-inspiring sight, a gaping maw leading down into the earth's fiery core. I could almost feel the echoes of ancient eruptions, the raw power that had shaped this land. Astrid was fascinated, peppering me with questions about volcanoes and lava. It’s moments like these, sharing the wonders of the world with her, that make these family trips so incredibly special.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand vistas, but in the subtle details that whisper tales of fire and ice.

After descending from Eldborg, we drove towards the Gerðuberg Cliffs.

These basalt columns are a geological marvel, a wall of perfectly hexagonal pillars rising from the earth. Formed by the rapid cooling of lava flows thousands of years ago, they stand as a testament to the power and artistry of nature. We walked along the base of the cliffs, marveling at their symmetry and scale. It felt like standing before an ancient fortress, a silent guardian of this rugged coastline.

Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the geological processes that had created these formations. He explained to Astrid how the lava had cooled and contracted, forming these perfectly shaped columns. I loved seeing them, they reminded me of the basalt columns I had seen back home in Norway.

Lunch was at Hjá Góðu Fólki, a charming restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere and local cuisine.

The name translates to At Good People's Place, and it certainly lived up to its name. We enjoyed a delicious meal of fish soup and homemade bread, surrounded by local art and friendly faces. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after our morning adventures.

Our final stop for the day was Álftafjörður, a serene fjord known as the swan fjord.

As we drove along the coast, the views were simply stunning. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. We spotted several swans gliding gracefully across the surface, their white plumage contrasting against the dark water.

I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I gazed at this tranquil scene. It was a reminder that amidst the rugged beauty and volcanic activity, Iceland also holds moments of serene tranquility. We stopped at a small souvenir shop, Álfar og Tröll ehf, in Grundarfjörður.

I picked up a few handcrafted items, wanting to support the local artisans. Astrid chose a small troll figurine, a reminder of the Icelandic folklore we had been reading about.

Dinner tonight was at Arnarbær, a restaurant in Arnarstapi known for its seafood and pizzas.

We enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the clouds in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible country. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has exceeded all my expectations, offering a diverse range of landscapes and experiences that have captivated my heart and soul. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to explore Lýsuhóll, Gatklettur, and the Stone Bridge [If you are interested, read more about it in the itinerary of tomorrow]. I am also looking forward to visiting Hvanneyri Pub!

I am also incredibly grateful to have shared this experience with my friends. Their laughter and camaraderie have added so much joy to this journey. And even though Maximilian sometimes gets lost in the geological details, his enthusiasm is infectious.

I am also very pleased that I did not forget my waterproof jacket. I was very useful today! However, I really missed sunscreen today. The sun was shining bright, and I am sure I got a little bit sunburnt.

Until tomorrow!
