Exploring Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula with Friends
Day 9: Whispers of Vikings and Volcanic Stone: Exploring Snæfellsnes
Discover the mystical Snæfellsnes Peninsula: from lava fields and coastal paths to Viking legends, a day of Icelandic wonder awaits.
Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Present
Today was a day where the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland truly seeped into my soul. Leaving behind the charming town of Ólafsvík, I embarked on a journey through landscapes that felt both ancient and eternally new. It was a day filled with stories whispered by the wind, etched in volcanic stone, and painted across the vast Icelandic sky. Traveling with my friends always adds a layer of shared joy to these adventures, creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Narfeyrarstofa in Ólafsvík. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Icelandic fare were the perfect start to what I knew would be a day of exploration. I savored every bite, thinking about how much I appreciate starting my day with a good meal; it sets the tone for everything that follows. Fuelled up and ready, we set off towards our first destination: Hofsstadaskogur.
Hofsstadaskogur, a serene nature preserve, offered a tranquil escape. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As we wandered through the birch forest, sunlight dappled through the leaves, creating an ethereal glow. It was a welcome contrast to the rugged landscapes that Iceland is so known for. The well-maintained paths and thoughtfully placed benches made it easy to pause and simply absorb the peace of the surroundings. It was easy to see why this place is a favorite spot for locals seeking a bit of respite. I made a mental note to try and replicate this kind of tranquility in my own backyard back in Munich – perhaps a small patch of native plants to remind me of this serene forest.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of nature.
Our next stop was something completely different: The Torch. This striking structure stands as a testament to both architectural ingenuity and the raw beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The views from The Torch were simply breathtaking. The rugged coastline stretched out before us, meeting the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. In the distance, the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier shimmered in the sunlight, a constant reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped this land. The design of The Torch itself was fascinating, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. It felt like a beacon, drawing our eyes to the natural wonders that surrounded it. Astrid would have loved climbing around the base of the sculpture and taking photos. I know that Maximilian would have appreciated the architectural design and the thought that went into its construction.

Lunch at Samkomuhúsið in Arnarstapa was a delightful experience. This charming restaurant exudes Icelandic hospitality, with its warm decor and friendly staff. I opted for the lamb soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. My friends tried the mashed fish and crepes, and everyone was happy with their meals. The restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients, adding a touch of authenticity to the dining experience. I also appreciated the cozy atmosphere, which made us feel right at home. After lunch, we took a stroll around Arnarstapa, admiring the unique rock formations and the dramatic coastal scenery. The sculpture of Bárður Snæfellsás, the half-man, half-troll guardian of the peninsula, added a touch of Icelandic mythology to the landscape.

The final major stop of the day was Berserkjahraun, a lava field steeped in Viking history and folklore. As we drove along the road that winds through the field, I was struck by the otherworldly beauty of the landscape. Jagged obsidian rocks, covered in vibrant green moss, stretched out as far as the eye could see. The setting sun cast long shadows, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. I could almost imagine Viking warriors battling their way through this harsh terrain. The name Berserkjahraun translates to Berserker’s lava field, a reference to the Eyrbyggja saga. According to the saga, a farmer tasked two berserkers with clearing a path through the lava field. The berserkers completed the task, but the farmer had them killed instead of honoring his promise. The path they cleared, Berserkjagata, is still visible today.

The landscape of Berserkjahraun was formed around 4,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions. The lava flowed from a series of craters known as the Ljósufjöll volcanic system. The rapid cooling of the lava resulted in the formation of jagged obsidian rocks. Over time, wind and rain sculpted these rocks into a labyrinth of abstract formations.
As the day drew to a close, we stopped at Ísey Skyr Bar for a taste of Icelandic health. I opted for a skyr parfait, layered with fresh berries and granola. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, a sweet and satisfying treat that left me feeling energized and refreshed.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the sheer diversity of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From tranquil forests to rugged coastlines, from architectural marvels to ancient lava fields, this region truly offers a microcosm of Iceland's natural beauty. It's a place where history and mythology come alive, where the forces of nature are on full display, and where every turn reveals a new and breathtaking vista. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this remarkable place with my friends, sharing in the wonder and creating memories that will last a lifetime. As we head towards Snaefellsvegur tomorrow, I can't wait to see what other hidden gems await us. I'm especially excited to see Gufuskálar and Snorrastadir Farm Holidays. I am also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Harbour Cafe, Stapinn, and Sjávarkjallarinn. I think I'll get a little souvenir from Syðra Lágafell to remember this trip.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we had dinner at Skipper Restaurant in Ólafsvík. I enjoyed the fresh seafood and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and wonder.
