Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Tasmanian Treasures
Discover the stunning Russell and Lady Barron Falls, and the charming Reliquaire shop in Tasmania's wilderness. A day of nature and whimsy!
Enchanting Waterfalls and Whimsical Wonders
Today was a day of embracing Tasmania's natural beauty and quirky charm. From cascading waterfalls nestled in ancient rainforests to a treasure trove of unique finds in a delightful shop, it was a journey that combined the serenity of nature with the joy of discovery. Days like these remind me why I set out on this solo adventure – to find moments of peace and wonder in the heart of the wilderness.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Pancake Train Restaurant. While I know there's one of these closer to Melbourne, it was fun to experience one here in Tasmania! I opted for a stack of their signature pancakes, fluffy and delicious, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. After breakfast, I drove to Mount Field National Park, eager to witness the famed Russell Falls and Lady Barron Falls.
The air was crisp and clean as I set out on the trail to Russell Falls. The walk was easy, and even wheelchair accessible in some parts, which was a pleasant surprise. Towering swamp gums and lush ferns lined the path, creating a vibrant green canopy overhead. It felt like stepping into another world, a serene sanctuary far removed from the hustle and bustle of Munich. I couldn’t help but think of Astrid and how much she would have loved this magical forest. Perhaps next time, I'll bring her and Maximilian along for a family adventure.
Reaching Russell Falls, I was immediately captivated. The water cascaded down multiple tiers of rock, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's artistry. The sound of the falls was soothing, a gentle symphony that echoed through the forest. I spent some time simply breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. It was a perfect moment of tranquility, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature's beauty speaks volumes.
Next on the agenda was Lady Barron Falls. The walk to Lady Barron Falls took me through the Tall Trees Walk, where I was dwarfed by the immense eucalyptus regnans, the tallest flowering plants on Earth. Trying to capture their full height in a single photo was a challenge, but I relished the attempt. The forest was alive with the sounds of birdsong, and I even spotted a few native birds flitting through the trees. I made a mental note to look up the bird list for Mount Field National Park later; I was curious to identify the different species I had encountered.

Lady Barron Falls, though smaller than Russell Falls, had its own unique charm. The falls cascaded down moss-covered rocks, creating a serene and secluded atmosphere. I took my time here, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and reflecting on the journey so far. I thought about Maximilian and Astrid, and how much I missed them. Solo travel is wonderful for self-reflection, but I also cherish the moments when I can share these experiences with my family.
After a fulfilling morning of waterfall chasing, it was time for lunch. I stopped at the Tavern Bar & Bistro, where I enjoyed a hearty meal. The bistro had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the food was delicious. It was a perfect spot to refuel before the next adventure.
In the afternoon, I decided to visit Reliquaire, a shop in Latrobe that had been recommended to me. The drive to Latrobe was scenic, winding through rolling hills and picturesque countryside. As I drove, I couldn't help but think about the upcoming events in Tasmania. I’d read about the Agfest in Carrick and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra performances in Hobart. Perhaps I could catch one of those before my trip ends.
Arriving in Latrobe, I immediately spotted Reliquaire. It was like stepping into a whimsical wonderland. The shop was filled with unique toys, games, and delightful treasures for all ages. Every corner seemed to unravel a different narrative, from Disney classics to medieval lore. I spent hours browsing through the eclectic collection, marveling at the creativity and craftsmanship on display.

I learned that the Christie family, who own the shop, rebuilt their wonderland from ashes after a devastating fire in 2015. Their resilience and love for the extraordinary were truly inspiring. I picked up a few small gifts for Astrid, knowing she would adore the quirky toys and trinkets. I also found a beautiful handcrafted wooden puzzle for Maximilian, something to challenge his mind and bring him joy.
Before leaving Latrobe, I treated myself to dinner at THE OLD BLACK STUMP Restaurant and Function Room. The restaurant had a rustic charm, and the menu featured modern cuisine with vegetarian and gluten-free options. I savored every bite, enjoying the cozy ambiance and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with natural beauty and whimsical discoveries. It was a bit of a drive, but worth it.
As I drove back to my campsite, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. I'll be exploring Waterfall Bay Lookout and Remarkable Cave, two more of Tasmania's stunning natural attractions. I'm also planning to visit The Salamanca Whisky Bar in the evening for a taste of local spirits. I am looking forward to it.
Today was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey. It was a day of embracing the beauty of nature, discovering hidden gems, and finding moments of peace and wonder in the heart of the Tasmanian wilderness. And as I drift off to sleep under the starry sky, I am grateful for the experiences and memories I have made so far. I am hoping that tomorrow will be just as memorable.
Tasmania continues to surprise and delight, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. Good night from the Tasmanian Wilderness!
I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventure with you all soon. Until then, happy travels!
I also need to remember to buy insect repellent. I keep forgetting it!
