Artistic Adventure in Naoshima: A Journey to Japan's Art Island
Day 5: Art and Authenticity: Soaking Up Naoshima's Soul
Discover Naoshima beyond museums: Experience local life at the public bath and Miyanoura Gallery, savoring island flavors and stories.
Naoshima's Everyday Art
Today was about diving deeper into the heart of Naoshima, beyond the celebrated museums and iconic installations. It's easy to get caught up in the grand art pieces, but I wanted to experience the island on a more intimate level, connecting with its people and everyday life. It turned out to be a day filled with unexpected delights and a newfound appreciation for the soul of Naoshima.
My day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. I opted for their house special dry curry, a flavorful and filling way to start the day. Fuelled up, I was ready to explore. The plan was to visit the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu and Miyanoura Gallery 6, but I was open to whatever the day might bring.

Immersing Myself in Local Culture: Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu
The first stop was the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. Now, I've been to onsen before, but this was unlike any I'd ever seen. Designed by artist Shinro Ohtake, the bathhouse is a vibrant collage of colors, mosaics, and quirky sculptures. It’s more than just a place to get clean; it's an immersive art experience.
Before going in, I made sure I had everything I needed. Soap, shampoo, and a small towel are essential, and while you can buy them there, it's good to be prepared. Following the proper bathing etiquette is also key – washing thoroughly before entering the bath, and of course, no photography inside.
Stepping into the bathhouse was like entering another world. The walls were adorned with intricate mosaics, and a life-size elephant sculpture stood between the men's and women's bathing areas. It was surreal, relaxing in the warm water while surrounded by such playful and imaginative art.

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something you experience, something that becomes a part of your daily life.
It struck me how this bathhouse embodies the spirit of Naoshima. It's not just about displaying art in a sterile museum setting; it's about integrating art into the fabric of everyday life, making it accessible and engaging for everyone. It’s a place where locals and tourists alike can come together, relax, and appreciate art in a unique and intimate way.
Discovering Hidden Stories at Miyanoura Gallery 6
After a refreshing soak, I headed to Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, the gallery has a unique history. It’s now a space for contemporary art, often showcasing works that reflect the island's history and culture.
The current exhibition, Setouchi Archive by artist Motoyuki Shitamichi, was particularly fascinating. It’s an ongoing project documenting various aspects of the Setouchi region's history, from tourism to local photography. The exhibits change, offering a fresh perspective each season.

I spent a good hour exploring the gallery, reading the stories and examining the artifacts. It was a glimpse into the soul of Naoshima, a reminder that beneath the surface of this art mecca lies a rich and complex history.
A Cajun Culinary Detour: Lunch at Gumbo Hut Shioya
By this point, my stomach was rumbling, and I decided to try Gumbo Hut Shioya for lunch. I’d heard whispers of its delicious Cajun cuisine, a surprising find on a Japanese art island.

The restaurant is run by a friendly owner who creates an inviting atmosphere with great music from the 50s and 60s. It felt like stepping into a vintage garage, a world away from the minimalist aesthetic of the art museums.
I ordered their standard sausage and chicken gumbo, and it was fantastic. Hearty, flavorful, and surprisingly authentic, it was a welcome change of pace from the Japanese cuisine I'd been indulging in. Buddy, the owner and chef, is a gem - super friendly and loves to chat about his gumbo knowledge. He even had some Louisiana hot sauce for those who like a little extra kick.
Udon for Dinner
For dinner, I opted for something more traditional: Kinosaki Udon Naoshima. Located near Miyanoura Port, it’s a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. I ordered their famous Niku Udon (meat udon). The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich and flavorful. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and art appreciation.

The Setouchi Triennale is coming up in 2025, and I’m already excited to see what new installations and exhibitions will be on display. The Naoshima New Museum of Art, designed by Tadao Ando, is scheduled to open, and I’m eager to see the works by contemporary artists from Asia.
As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, I reflected on the day. It wasn't about ticking off the must-see attractions; it was about immersing myself in the local culture, connecting with the people, and discovering the hidden stories of Naoshima. It’s these authentic experiences that make travel so rewarding. Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit the Red Pumpkin and Benesse House Park. I’m curious to see how these iconic landmarks will resonate with me after today's more intimate encounters. Good night from Naoshima!

P.S. I almost forgot! While at the Chichu Art Museum Ticket Center, I overheard a couple talking about the Open Sky Night Program. Apparently, it's a special viewing of James Turrell's Open Sky artwork at night, and it requires a reservation. I'm definitely going to try to snag a spot before I leave!
