Hidden Gems and Artistic Reflections

Today on Naoshima felt like uncovering hidden treasures, each corner revealing a new facet of this island's unique charm. From community hubs to cozy cafes, it was a day of artistic immersion and local flavors. It's amazing how much this island continues to surprise me, even on the thirteenth day of our trip!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. Tucked away near the Art House Project, this café felt like stepping into someone's home. Greta had read about it and insisted we try it. The friendly couple running the place greeted us warmly, and I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. The homemade vegetables and the freshly brewed coffee were the perfect way to start the day. It’s these small, authentic experiences that really make a trip memorable. As someone who appreciates a good cup of coffee, I was especially pleased. I even considered the possibility of opening a similar place back in Heidelberg, but Greta quickly reminded me of my software engineering job! Still, a man can dream, right?

After breakfast, we made our way to Naoshima Hall. This multipurpose facility, designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi, is a true architectural marvel. The hall is designed with the island's natural elements in mind, seamlessly blending into the environment. The building utilizes a hip-and-gable roof made from hinoki cypress, and a wind passage that helps with airflow. It's not just a building; it's a space that breathes with the island.

Exploring Naoshima Hall gave me a deeper appreciation for how art and community intertwine here. It’s inspiring to see a space that serves both the residents and visitors, hosting sports, recreation, local festivals, and performing arts. The all-women bunraku puppet theatre group is a highlight, showcasing the island’s cultural heritage. As someone who enjoys learning about local traditions, I found this aspect particularly fascinating. The building is a cornerstone of a research project that aims to communicate the island's material history and natural patterns to the next generation.

Next on our list was the Art Island Center. This center provided a comprehensive overview of the island's art scene, helping us connect the dots between various installations and museums. It's a great starting point for anyone wanting to delve deeper into Naoshima's artistic landscape. The center itself is an architectural marvel, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing insights and recommendations that enhanced our understanding of the island's art.

For lunch, we decided to try Aisunao, a Japanese restaurant in a converted traditional house. The restaurant is known for its healthy and vegetarian-friendly dishes, featuring organically grown rice and vegetables. Many of the dishes are suitable for vegans, and they offer vegan-friendly desserts as well. The blue entrance curtain with a cute rice bowl design made it easy to spot. Inside, we sat on raised tatami mats, overlooking a tranquil garden. The set lunch was well-balanced, and it felt like a home-cooked meal. It was a delightful break from the more touristy spots, offering a taste of local life.

In the late afternoon, I found myself drawn to Akaito Coffee. This café, located a short walk from Miyanoura Port, has a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. The red-brick exterior and vintage interior create a cozy space that feels both timeless and inviting. The coffee is hand-dripped from beans roasted in-house, and the aroma alone was enough to draw me in. I enjoyed a cup of their Akaito Blend, paired with a homemade scone. The café also houses Akaito Books, a small bookstore with a thoughtfully curated selection. Sipping coffee while browsing through art books was the perfect way to unwind. It’s a place where people connect, sharing stories and moments that make the island feel closer.

As evening approached, we headed to Cin.na.mon for dinner. This restaurant, a short walk from Miyanoura Port, is known for its Naoshima Curry and fresh seafood. The original Naoshima Curry, simmered for over six hours, was a must-try. I opted for the seafood version, and it was packed with fresh ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea. Greta chose the sashimi set meal, which came with a small bowl and mini carpaccio. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, making it a great spot to end the day. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food and good company.

Reflecting on the day, I’m struck by how Naoshima seamlessly blends art, architecture, and nature. It’s not just about the famous museums and installations; it’s about the hidden gems and local experiences that make this island so special. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kasaneiwa and the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. I’m excited to see what other treasures this island holds, especially as our trip winds down. It's hard to believe tomorrow is our last day!

Evenings like this, sitting down to write, make me appreciate the journey even more. I find myself thinking about how I can bring some of this inspiration back home to Heidelberg. Maybe I'll start small, with a few changes to our garden, or perhaps I'll finally get around to framing some of the art prints I've collected over the years. Whatever it is, I know that Naoshima has left an indelible mark on me, reminding me to seek out beauty and connection in the everyday.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we strolled along the harbor, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The lights from the fishing boats twinkled in the distance, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with art, culture, and culinary delights.

As I prepare for our final day on Naoshima, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. This island has not only broadened my appreciation for art but has also deepened my connection with nature and community. I look forward to sharing more stories and insights as we conclude our artistic adventure on Japan's Art Island.

And who knows, maybe one day I’ll open that little café in Heidelberg after all. But for now, I’m content to soak in the inspiration and carry the spirit of Naoshima with me, wherever I go.
