Saying Goodbye to the Art Island

As my two-week adventure on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of art, nature, and tranquility that this place offers. It’s hard to believe it’s already the final day! I woke up this morning with a mix of excitement for the day’s plans and a touch of sadness knowing that this unique chapter is coming to an end. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end, and I’m determined to make the most of my last day on this enchanting island.

My friends and I started our day with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. The cafe is known for its delicious menu featuring local ingredients and traditional recipes. The cozy and welcoming interior, decorated with touches that reflect the island's artistic vibe, made it a perfect spot to start the day. I opted for the Seasonal Special Lunch set, which included a Spanish omelet with bamboo shoots, cheese gratin with chicken and spring cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, and quinoa. It was nutritious and delicious, just what I needed for a day of exploring.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Kasaneiwa. The balancing rock formation is located on the coast of Naoshima. The climb to Kasaneiwa was a bit of a trek, involving a long stairway and a narrow mountain road, but the view of the Seto Inland Sea from the top was totally worth it. It felt like a Japanese version of the Golden Rock in Myanmar, maintaining a mysterious sense of balance. The landscape was breathtaking, and it was a great spot for some quiet contemplation. The fresh sea breeze and the panoramic views were a perfect way to connect with nature before diving back into the art scene.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on our itinerary was the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This outdoor art installation, created by Cai Guo-Qiang, is located at the Benesse House Museum. Luckily, today was Sunday, one of the few days when the bath is open to the public. The Cultural Melting Bath is arranged according to Feng Shui principles, with Taihu rocks from China and an American-made Jacuzzi. The water is infused with five kinds of medicinal herbs, creating a soothing and therapeutic experience. It was so relaxing, especially after the climb to Kasaneiwa. It’s amazing how art can be integrated into everyday experiences, turning a simple bath into a cultural and sensory journey.

For lunch, we headed to Ebisukamo, a charming little izakaya in Honmura. This place is known for its incredible food and friendly service. The owner is praised for going above and beyond for customers. I tried the clams in sake and the yellowtail sashimi, both of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. The portions were a bit small, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. The cozy atmosphere and the personal touch from the owner made it a memorable dining experience. It felt like a true taste of local life on Naoshima.

After lunch, we spent some time wandering through the streets of Honmura, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the art we’d seen over the past two weeks. It’s amazing how this small island has managed to become such a significant center for contemporary art. The blend of traditional Japanese culture with modern art installations creates a unique and captivating environment. Every corner seems to hold a surprise, whether it’s a hidden sculpture or a beautifully designed building.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to New Olympia for a final dinner on the island. This sushi restaurant is a hidden gem, known for its fresh seafood and meticulously prepared dishes. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with elegant decor that reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics. I enjoyed a variety of sushi options, from classic nigiri to innovative rolls, all made with the freshest ingredients. The views from the restaurant, overlooking the serene waters surrounding Naoshima, added to the experience. It was the perfect way to savor our last evening on the island.

To cap off our trip, we decided to visit BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima for a nightcap. This cozy local pub in Miyanoura is a welcoming spot for late-night drinks and conversation. It’s the kind of place where you can easily strike up a conversation with the person next to you or simply enjoy a quiet drink alone. I tried one of their signature cocktails, and it was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our incredible journey.

Reflecting on the past two weeks, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Naoshima Island. It’s a place that has truly captured my heart, and I know I’ll be back someday. The art, the nature, the food, and the people have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I’ll cherish the memories and the inspiration I’ve gained from this artistic adventure.

As I prepare to leave tomorrow, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I came to Naoshima seeking inspiration and a break from my routine in Heidelberg, and I found so much more. The island has a way of slowing down time and allowing you to connect with your surroundings and yourself. It’s a place where art is not just something you see in a museum, but a part of everyday life.

I’m excited to return to Germany and share my experiences with Greta and Marko. I know they’ll be eager to hear all about the art, the food, and the culture of Naoshima. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll all come back together to experience this magical island as a family.

For now, it’s time to say goodbye to Naoshima. But I know that the memories and the inspiration will stay with me forever. Until next time, Art Island!

This trip has definitely sparked my interest in incorporating more sustainable practices into my life back in Heidelberg. Seeing how Naoshima balances art, tourism, and environmental consciousness is truly inspiring.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading back to Takamatsu and then Tokyo for my flight back to Frankfurt. It’s going to be a long journey, but I’m already looking forward to sharing my stories and photos with all of you. Stay tuned for more travel adventures!
