Contemplation and Community: Artful Immersion in Naoshima

Today was a day of deep dives into the artistic soul of Naoshima. It’s amazing how this small island packs such a powerful punch when it comes to contemporary art. With my friends, I set out to explore the Lee Ufan Museum and the Art House Project: Kadoya, eager to experience more of what this unique island has to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Terrace Restaurant. The restaurant’s large windows offered stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, creating a serene atmosphere as we enjoyed our meal. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger, soaking in the tranquility before embarking on the day’s adventures.

First on our itinerary was the Lee Ufan Museum. Nestled in a quiet valley, the museum, designed by Tadao Ando in collaboration with Lee Ufan, is a marvel in itself. The architecture seamlessly blends with nature, creating a space that encourages contemplation.

The museum showcases Lee Ufan’s minimalist paintings and sculptures, which invite you to slow down and reflect. I found myself particularly drawn to the outdoor installations, where the interplay of stone, concrete, and iron created a sense of harmony with the surrounding landscape. It’s a place where art, architecture, and nature converge, offering a truly immersive experience.
Art is not about the object but about the space in between.
After immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of the Lee Ufan Museum, it was time for lunch. We headed to NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda, a charming eatery known for its delicious seafood. The restaurant is near the port, making it a convenient stop for travelers. I opted for the fish set meal, which featured the freshest catches of the day. The menu changes daily, ensuring a delightful surprise with each visit. The welcoming staff and the cozy atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we ventured to the Art House Project: Kadoya. This unique project transforms empty houses in the Honmura district into art spaces, each with its own distinct character. Kadoya, the first house in the project, was particularly fascinating.

The house, which is about 200 years old, features Tatsuo Miyajima's Sea of Time '98, a work that incorporates the participation of the townspeople of Naoshima. Walking through Kadoya felt like stepping back in time, while simultaneously engaging with contemporary art. It’s a testament to the island’s ability to blend the old and the new, creating a unique cultural landscape.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we stopped by the Art Island Center. This place is more than just a shop; it’s a hub for art and research. I picked up a few art books and postcards, wanting to take a piece of Naoshima’s artistic spirit back home with me. It's also a great place to learn more about the Setouchi region and its art scene.

For dinner, we chose Yuunagi, a restaurant known for its flounder dishes. Located near the ferry terminal, it’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I opted for the flounder set meal, which was both delicious and satisfying. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and exploration.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I’m struck by how Naoshima manages to create a harmonious blend of art and life. The island’s art scene isn’t confined to museums; it spills out into the streets, the houses, and even the restaurants. It’s a place where art is not just something to be observed, but something to be lived.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Yellow Pumpkin and Art House Project: Haisha. I’m excited to see more of what this island has to offer and to continue exploring its unique artistic landscape. And perhaps we'll wind down at Cin.na.mon, a local bar, to share our impressions of the day over a drink.

Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me. It's a place where art becomes an integral part of everyday life, and I'm grateful to be experiencing it with my friends. I'm also glad that I didn't forget my camera today, because I would have been kicking myself if I hadn't been able to capture all of this beauty.

I should probably buy a Japanese phrasebook, though. I've been relying on my friends who know some Japanese, but it would be nice to be able to communicate a bit more effectively on my own. And maybe an extra memory card for my camera, too, just in case I run out of space. You can never be too prepared, right?

Until tomorrow!
