Stepping Back in Time: A Day of Heritage and Flavors in the Douro Valley

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of the Douro Valley's history and indulging in its exquisite flavors. From exploring ancient vineyards to wandering through a stunning historical estate, every moment felt like stepping back in time. The crisp February air, though a bit chilly, added a refreshing touch to the day's adventures, making it all the more memorable.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo. The restaurant is part of the Quinta de Ventozelo, one of the oldest and largest estates in the region.

The views from the terrace were breathtaking – a sweeping panorama of vineyards cascading down to the Douro River. It was hard to believe this was once a simple canteen for the quinta workers; now, it's a chic restaurant that celebrates local gastronomy. I savored traditional Douro and Trás-os-Montes products, a delightful suggestion from the chef. I started with smoked trout, which was delicate and flavorful, followed by a hearty dish of ‘porco’ (pork), and ‘bolo’ (cake) for dessert. Every bite was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. The tomatoes were a highlight, bursting with flavor, accompanied by in-house olive oil that was fruitier than any I’ve tasted before. I even tried a 20-year-old dry white port, a novel experience with honey tasting notes that made me feel like I could drink it on a warm day in the sun. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Marko here someday; they would absolutely love the views and the food.

After breakfast, I set off to Quinta Nova Nossa Senhora do Carmo. As I drove through the winding roads, the landscape unfolded before me like a painting – terraced vineyards clinging to the hillsides, the river snaking its way through the valley, and the soft morning light casting long shadows. The estate has been owned by the Amorim family since 1999, and their dedication to sustainability and social programs is truly commendable. This place is more than just a winery; it’s a living testament to the region’s cultural heritage.

I took a tour of the vineyards, learning about the unique micro-terroirs and the traditional methods used to cultivate the grapes. It’s incredible to think that some of these vines are centuries old, their roots reaching deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from the land. The estate dates back to 1725, and has been listed as a winery since 1756, after the Douro region was created. The family's link to the wine industry began as cork makers in the late 19th Century. Approximately 60 percent of the vines are made up of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. I explored the original cellar from 1764, and the new wine cellar which incorporates artificial intelligence. I was struck by the blend of tradition and innovation, the respect for the past combined with a vision for the future.

To truly appreciate the Douro Valley, one must immerse oneself in its history, savor its flavors, and connect with the land that gives it life.

Next on the agenda was the Fundaçăo da Casa de Mateus. The Casa de Mateus is considered one of the finest examples of baroque civil architecture in Portugal. As I approached the estate, the iconic façade came into view, instantly recognizable from the Mateus Rosé wine bottles. The house was built in the first half of the 18th century, and features finishing touches by Nicolau Nasoni. I wandered through the meticulously manicured gardens, admiring the box hedges, statues, and fountains. The February weather, though a bit chilly, meant I practically had the place to myself, which was a definite plus. The interior was just as impressive, with intricately carved wood ceilings, antique furniture, and a library filled with remarkable editions, including the epic poem ‘Os Lusíadas.’

The Casa de Mateus isn’t just a beautiful building; it’s a hub of cultural activity, sponsoring festivals, courses, seminars, and exhibitions in music, literature, sculpture, and ceramics. It’s owned by the Mateus Foundation, which organizes a number of cultural activities. The interior decoration includes intricately carved wood ceilings, furniture from several periods, 17th and 18th century paintings, silverware, ceramics and a library with a remarkable edition of the epic poem Os Lusíadas. I learned about the family history, their contributions to Portuguese society, and their commitment to preserving this architectural gem for future generations. There are a number of activities going on at the Casa de Mateus from February 2024 to 2025, including conversations around the ‘Works of Mário Soares’ collection.

For lunch, I stopped at Sabores do Douro. Nestled away from the tourist crowds, this restaurant offered an authentic taste of the region. I opted for the ‘menu of the day,’ which featured a perfectly roasted beef dish served with potatoes and rice. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, and it felt like a true home-cooked meal. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in Portugal. The restaurant has a rating of 9.5/10, with users rating the quality of food 10/10.

As evening approached, I made my way to Adega Wine Bar for a pre-dinner drink. I found out that this gem is located on the 11th floor of the Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro, and it boasts amazing views. It's an intimate place to enjoy the sunset. The wine selection was interesting, and the food was very good. I sipped on a glass of local wine, watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the Douro Valley in all its glory.

Dinner was at São Luiz by Chef Vitor de Oliveira. The restaurant is known for its amazing service, fine dining, and views of the Douro River. The location, service, and atmosphere are amazing, and is by far the best service in the Douro Valley region. Chef Vitor de Oliveira’s innovative cuisine was a perfect end to a perfect day. The restaurant has a rating of 8.7/10 on TheFork. I savored each bite, knowing that tomorrow would bring a new set of adventures.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Miradouro da Estrada Nacional 222 for more scenic views and then explore the Quinta de Casaldronho Wine Hotel. I’m also planning on doing some shopping at Aneto Wines. As I head back to Gaia Residence, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment. The Douro Valley has a way of captivating the soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. Although I missed my sunglasses and umbrella, I was well prepared for the activities I had planned.
