Deciphering Gothenburg: From Escape Rooms to Sky-High Delights

Today was a whirlwind of puzzles, mythology, and culinary heights, painting another vibrant stroke on our Gothenburg family adventure. It's amazing how a city can offer such diverse experiences in a single day, keeping us all engaged and creating memories we'll cherish.

Our day started, as usual, with breakfast at the Scandic Goteborg Central. It's become a comforting ritual, fueling us for the day's escapades. Marko, of course, made a beeline for the pancakes, his little face smeared with syrup as he plotted the day's adventures with Greta. After fortifying ourselves, we set off to test our wits at the Gothenburg Escape Game.

The Gothenburg Escape Game was quite the experience. We opted for the 'Bank Heist A' challenge. From the moment we stepped into the lobby of the old bank, we were immersed in the storyline. Armed with only flashlights, we had to navigate our way to the vault and steal the diamond before the night watchman made his rounds. It felt like being in a real-life thriller, a bit like a Croatian action movie, but with less explosions and more brainpower required. Marko was surprisingly helpful, spotting clues we adults had missed. It was a fantastic team effort, and we managed to crack the codes and escape with the diamond just in the nick of time. It was a great way to start the day, getting our minds working and our adrenaline pumping.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the iconic Poseidon statue at Götaplatsen. This was more for the sightseeing aspect, and less for the mythology itself. I remember learning about Poseidon back in school in Varaždin, but seeing the statue in person was something else. Standing proudly at the top of Avenyn, the statue is hard to miss. It was inaugurated in 1931 and has become one of Gothenburg's most famous landmarks. The square itself was constructed for the World Fair in 1923, and it's surrounded by beautiful buildings like the Concert Hall, the City Theatre, and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. I learned that the statue was created by Carl Milles, and it was quite controversial when it was first unveiled because of its nudity. Now, it's just a beloved symbol of the city.

Marko was fascinated by the statue. He kept asking why the man was standing in the water and why he didn't have any clothes on. Greta, ever the patient kindergarten teacher, explained the story of Poseidon in a way that a six-year-old could understand. We took the obligatory family photos with Poseidon in the background, trying to capture the essence of Gothenburg in a single frame. It's funny how a statue can become such an integral part of a city's identity.

After our cultural immersion, it was time for lunch. We decided to treat ourselves to a meal at View Skybar & Restaurant, located on the 12th floor of the Riverton Hotel. The name says it all – the panoramic views of Gothenburg's harbor were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect setting for a special family lunch. The restaurant itself had an elegant vibe, but it still felt welcoming and relaxed. We settled into a table by the window and soaked in the scenery.

The food at View Skybar was as impressive as the views. Greta ordered the fish, which she said was cooked to perfection. I opted for the veal, which was delicious, even if I did need to ask for a sharper knife. Marko, of course, went for the kids' menu, devouring his chicken nuggets with gusto. We also shared a truffle fries, which were the perfect blend of salty and savory. The service was impeccable, our waitress was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. It was definitely worth the money.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Flying Tiger Copenhagen. Marko was immediately drawn to the toys, while Greta browsed the quirky home goods. I ended up buying a few small gifts for friends back in Heidelberg. It's always fun to find unique and affordable souvenirs, and Flying Tiger Copenhagen definitely delivers on that front. The store was located on Avenyn, making it a convenient stop on our way back to the hotel.

Before dinner, we took a short break at the hotel. I took the opportunity to catch up on some emails and do a little research for tomorrow's itinerary. We're planning to visit Skansen Lejonet and Gunnebo Palace and Gardens, which should be interesting. I also need to remember to pack our adapter, as I forgot it this morning and we almost ran out of battery on Greta's phone. We also need swimwear, as I want to take Marko to the hotel pool tomorrow.

For dinner, we ventured out to The Barn, a restaurant known for its burgers. The Barn had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The interior was rustic and stylish, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I had the vegan burger, while Greta ordered the classic beef burger. Marko, predictably, chose the kids' burger. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a busy day of exploring Gothenburg.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Gothenburg has exceeded all of our expectations. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modern living. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today. I feel lucky to be able to share these experiences with Greta and Marko, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we're off to Skansen Lejonet and Gunnebo Palace and Gardens, followed by drinks at Pix bar. It is going to be another great day in Gothenburg!
