A Day of Discoveries in Gerês

Today was all about embracing the wild heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park. We ventured into the depths of its natural beauty, exploring cascading waterfalls and the haunting remains of a once-thriving mine. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights, a touch of history, and the simple joy of being together as a family in such a stunning landscape.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. It was a great way to fuel up for the adventures that lay ahead. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and it was evident that we were starting our day with some authentic flavors.

Fueled and ready, we drove towards our first destination: Cascata de Cela Cavalos. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the park's rugged terrain. When we arrived, the short hike to the waterfall was manageable even for Marko, who was excited to explore every nook and cranny along the way. As we approached, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building anticipation for the sight that awaited us.

And what a sight it was! Cascata de Cela Cavalos was a mesmerizing cascade of water, plunging into a clear, inviting pool. The sun was shining, and the scene felt like something out of a fairy tale. Marko was immediately captivated, wanting to jump right in. Greta and I watched him splash around, his laughter echoing through the serene surroundings. We took some photos, capturing the joy of the moment, and then simply sat by the water's edge, soaking in the beauty of nature.

After our refreshing interlude at the waterfall, we packed up and set off for our next destination: Minas dos Carris. The drive to the abandoned mine was quite different, taking us deeper into the mountains and revealing a more desolate, yet equally captivating, side of the park. The roads became narrower and bumpier, adding a sense of adventure to our journey.

When we finally arrived at Minas dos Carris, it felt like stepping back in time. The skeletal remains of the mining complex stood in stark contrast to the surrounding landscape, a poignant reminder of the area's industrial past. It was fascinating to wander through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like for the miners who once toiled here. Marko, with his boundless curiosity, peppered us with questions about the mine, its history, and the people who worked there. I tried my best to answer, drawing upon my knowledge of European history and the stories I had read about the region.

After our exploration of Minas dos Carris, we were ready for a late lunch. We drove to Espigueiro do Soajo, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was charming, with a rustic decor that perfectly complemented the surrounding countryside. We ordered a variety of dishes, including veal and cod, and everything was delicious. Marko especially enjoyed the cheesecake, declaring it the best he had ever tasted. Greta and I savored the local Vinho Verde, toasting to our wonderful day of adventure.

Marko, of course, stuck with juice. We sat outside, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect way to end our day.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had seen so much, learned so much, and experienced so much together as a family. From the cascading waters of Cela Cavalos to the haunting ruins of Minas dos Carris, Peneda-Gerês National Park had truly captured our hearts. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Greta and Marko, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Miradouro da Preguiça and Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas. I am looking forward to exploring more of what this park has to offer.

And as I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. We forgot the portable phone charger and the first aid kit, but we managed without them. We adapted, improvised, and made the most of every moment. That's what travel is all about, isn't it?
