Family Adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park
Day 6: Exploring the Wild Heart of Gerês: A Day of Discovery
Embark on a thrilling journey through the Reserva da Biosfera and serene Lagoa, savoring local flavors and unforgettable family moments.
A Day Amongst Giants
Today was about diving deep into the core of what makes Peneda-Gerês National Park so special. It wasn't just about seeing pretty landscapes, but about understanding the park's significance as a protected biosphere and experiencing its raw, untamed beauty. We explored unique ecosystems, tasted authentic flavors, and created memories that I know our family will cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Novas Pontes. I opted for a strong coffee and a *pastel de nata*, a classic Portuguese custard tart. Greta went for a fruit salad, while Marko, predictably, chose a chocolate croissant. Fortified, we set off to explore the Reserva de la Biosfera Transfronteriza Gerês-Xurés. I was eager to see firsthand what made this area a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. The Reserva encompasses a vast area spanning both Portugal and Spain, aiming to protect the shared natural and cultural heritage. As we drove, I explained to Marko the importance of preserving such places, highlighting the unique flora and fauna that thrive within its boundaries. He seemed genuinely interested, peppering me with questions about the animals that call the park home.

The landscape was breathtaking. Rolling hills covered in lush greenery, granite peaks piercing the sky, and the fresh, clean air filled our lungs. We stopped at several viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on the park's vastness. I tried to imagine the countless generations who had lived in harmony with this land, from Celtic tribes to Roman soldiers, leaving their mark on the landscape. It's humbling to realize how much history is embedded in these hills.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the natural world, where the simple act of observation becomes a profound experience.
Next on our itinerary was Lagoa. We drove along winding roads, the scenery growing more dramatic with each turn. The anticipation was building, especially for Marko, who had been asking about swimming all morning. Finally, we arrived at Lagoa, and it was even more stunning than the pictures I had seen. The crystal-clear water reflected the surrounding mountains, creating a mirror-like effect that was simply mesmerizing. I've read that some lagoons offer opportunities for swimming, but we decided to just enjoy the views and take some photos. Maybe next time we'll bring our swimming gear!

We spent a couple of hours exploring the area around Lagoa, hiking along the trails and soaking in the tranquility. Marko, ever the adventurous one, insisted on climbing every rock and exploring every nook and cranny. Greta and I followed, laughing and snapping photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. These are the moments I live for – the simple, unscripted moments of joy shared with my family in a beautiful setting.
By lunchtime, we were all ravenous. We drove to Saber ao Borralho for a traditional Portuguese meal. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented the surrounding landscape. I opted for the *cachena* beef, a local specialty, while Greta chose the grilled cod. Marko, of course, went for the *bitoque*, a steak with a fried egg on top. The food was delicious, hearty, and satisfying, exactly what we needed after a morning of exploring. I was particularly impressed with the *cachena* beef; it was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. It was a true taste of the region, and I savored every bite.

After lunch, we decided to do a little shopping at In Rio - Vestuário e Acessórios. Greta wanted to find a souvenir, and I was hoping to pick up a new hat to protect myself from the sun. The shop was small but well-stocked, with a variety of clothing, accessories, and local crafts. Greta found a beautiful hand-painted scarf, while I settled on a wide-brimmed hat made from natural fibers. Marko, of course, wanted a toy, but we managed to steer him towards a small wooden puzzle instead. It’s always a challenge to find something that’s both fun and educational, but I think we succeeded this time.

As the afternoon wore on, we started to feel the effects of the day's activities. We decided to head back to our accommodation to relax and recharge before dinner. We spent a couple of hours lounging by the pool, reading books, and enjoying the peace and quiet. Marko, of course, couldn't resist a quick swim, while Greta and I watched from the sidelines, sipping on refreshing drinks. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day.
For dinner, we chose Restaurante Cerdeira, known for its traditional Minho cuisine. I was eager to try some of the local specialties, and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the *bacalhau à lagareiro*, a classic cod dish with roasted potatoes and olive oil, while Greta opted for the *costeletão*, a grilled ribeye steak. Marko, predictably, chose the *francesinha*, a Portuguese sandwich filled with various meats and covered in a rich tomato sauce. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As we ate, we reflected on our experiences of the day. We talked about the stunning landscapes, the delicious food, and the unforgettable moments we had shared as a family. We all agreed that Peneda-Gerês National Park was a truly special place, a place of natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. It's a place that I know we will never forget, and a place that I hope to return to someday.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our family adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park. We plan to visit Cascata da Rajada and Poço da Gola, and then enjoy a farewell dinner at O Encontro - Por Marcação. I am already feeling a tinge of sadness that our trip is coming to an end, but I am also filled with gratitude for the memories we have created. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of spending time with loved ones, exploring new places, and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. It's a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world, where the simple act of observation becomes a profound experience. It’s these moments that make life truly meaningful, and I am so grateful to have shared them with my family.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by a local shop to pick up some essentials we had forgotten: a portable phone charger and a first aid kit. It's always the little things that can make a big difference on a trip like this, and I was glad to have them on hand. As we drove back, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. This trip has been everything I had hoped for and more, a chance to connect with nature, explore a new culture, and create lasting memories with my family. I am already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may be.
Back at our accommodation, Marko was already fast asleep, exhausted from a day of exploring. Greta and I sat on the balcony, sipping wine and enjoying the cool evening air. We talked about our favorite moments of the day, and we made plans for the future. We both agreed that this trip had been a success, a chance to reconnect with each other and with the natural world. As I looked up at the stars, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for all that we have. We are so lucky to have each other, to have the opportunity to travel, and to experience the beauty of the world. I know that these memories will stay with us forever, a reminder of the importance of family, adventure, and appreciation.
