A Fond Farewell to Plitvice

As our Croatian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared in Plitvice Lakes National Park. This trip was more than just a vacation; it was a chance for our family to reconnect with nature and each other, creating memories that we'll cherish for years to come. Today, our final day, was a mix of soaking in the last moments of this natural paradise and preparing for our journey back to Heidelberg.

The day started, as many others have, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Petar Plitvice Lakes. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth – a truly invigorating way to begin the day. We enjoyed a spread of local delicacies, fueling up for our last exploration of the park. Marko, especially, was excited, recounting tales of the 'big waterfall' and the 'fish that tickled his toes' from previous days. Greta and I savored the strong Croatian coffee, knowing we'd miss these simple morning rituals when we returned home. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly, making us feel right at home.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Our first stop was a visit to the National Park Plitvice Lakes fire department. It might seem like an unusual tourist destination, but I wanted to show Marko the important work these brave men and women do to protect this precious natural environment. It was a humbling experience, and Marko was fascinated by the fire trucks and equipment. He even got to try on a firefighter's helmet, which, of course, made his day! I was impressed by their dedication and the vital role they play in preserving the park's beauty. I am glad to know that there are people dedicated to protecting this natural wonder.

Next, we headed to the boat stop at Plitvice Lakes National Park. A boat ride on Kozjak Lake was the perfect way to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of the area. The sun was shining, and the water sparkled like a thousand diamonds. We glided across the lake, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sounds of nature. Marko was captivated, pointing out ducks and swans, his laughter echoing across the water. Greta and I simply enjoyed the serenity, holding hands and taking in the breathtaking views. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect snapshot of our family enjoying the simple pleasures of life. The boat tour included in the park ticket is a must to fully experience the beauty of the park.

Lunch was at Restoran Kozjak, a charming spot with a rustic ambiance. We indulged in traditional Croatian cuisine, savoring the flavors of the region. I ordered the *pastrva na žaru* (grilled trout), a local specialty, while Greta opted for a hearty *grah* (bean stew). Marko, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by devouring a plate of *ćevapi* (grilled minced meat) with gusto. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I felt a sense of contentment, knowing that we were experiencing the authentic flavors of Croatia. It was a reminder of my childhood, growing up in Varaždin, where family meals were always a celebration of local ingredients and traditional recipes.

After lunch, we decided to visit the Plitvice Lakes Etno Garden. It was a delightful experience, stepping back in time and immersing ourselves in Croatian heritage. We explored the traditional houses, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the craftsmanship of the local artisans. Marko was particularly fascinated by the old tools and farming equipment, imagining what life must have been like for his ancestors. We purchased a few souvenirs, small reminders of our time in Plitvice, and then enjoyed a refreshing *šljivovica* (plum brandy) at the garden's charming café. This place really gives you a sense of the local culture and traditions.

As the day drew to a close, we had our final dinner at Restaurant Jezero. The restaurant was located in Hotel Jezero, near Entrance 2. We chose it for its convenient location and the promise of a relaxing end to our trip. The food was good, but the atmosphere was even better. We sat on the terrace, overlooking the park, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to our Plitvice adventure. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the past eleven days: Marko's first glimpse of the waterfalls, Greta's laughter as she navigated the boardwalks, and the countless moments of shared joy and discovery.

Leaving Plitvice Lakes feels bittersweet. I'm eager to return to Heidelberg and my work on renewable energy solutions, but I'll miss the tranquility of the park, the warmth of the Croatian people, and the simple pleasure of spending quality time with my family. This trip has reaffirmed my belief in the importance of sustainable living and the power of nature to rejuvenate the soul. I feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my loved ones, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Heidelberg. While there's no specific itinerary, I know the trip will be filled with reflections on our time here. I'm already looking forward to sharing our stories and photos with friends and colleagues, inspiring them to embark on their own sustainable travel adventures. And who knows, maybe we'll even start planning our next family trip soon. Until then, *zbogom* Plitvice, and thank you for the memories.

As I reflect on this trip, I realize that the true value of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in the connections we make and the memories we create. Plitvice Lakes National Park will forever hold a special place in my heart, a reminder of the importance of family, nature, and sustainable living.
