Family Adventure in the Samaria Gorge
Day 8: Unearthing Crete's Hidden Gems: Caves, Summits, and Seaside Delights
Discover the wild beauty of Crete beyond Samaria Gorge, exploring Drakolaki Cave, Papakefala summit, and savoring local flavors in Agia Roumeli.
Crete's Untamed Side
Today was a day of venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Samaria Gorge, seeking out the raw, untamed beauty that Crete holds in its hidden corners. With Greta and Marko by my side, I knew we were in for a day of exploration that would challenge us, reward us with stunning views, and immerse us in the local culture. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the authentic experiences that make travel so enriching.
Our adventure began early, fueled by a hearty breakfast at Rousios in Agia Roumeli. The fresh air and anticipation of the day ahead made the simple meal of local bread, honey, and strong Greek coffee taste extraordinary. It's amazing how food can taste so much better when you are surrounded by nature and good company. From there, we set off towards Drakolaki Cave, a destination that promised both mystery and a good workout.

Drakolaki Cave: A Descent into the Underworld
The drive to Agios Ioannis, the starting point for the Drakolaki Cave hike, was an adventure in itself. The winding mountain roads offered breathtaking views of the rugged landscape, a stark contrast to the more gentle slopes we'd seen earlier in our trip. As a software engineer, I often find myself lost in the digital world, so these moments of pure, unadulterated nature are incredibly grounding. Marko, of course, loved the twists and turns, pretending we were on a rollercoaster.
The hike to Drakolaki Cave was a challenging one, a solid 2.5-hour trek that tested our stamina. The trail was steep and rocky, but the stunning views of the White Mountains kept us motivated. Greta, ever the optimist, pointed out the vibrant wildflowers that dotted the landscape, their colors popping against the grey stone. Reaching the cave entrance, a small and unassuming opening, felt like discovering a secret passage.
Equipped with headlamps, we ventured into Drakolaki Cave, and were immediately enveloped in cool, damp air. The silence was profound, broken only by the sound of dripping water. The cave is an underground river, stretching almost 2km, with the first 400m accessible. We explored as far as we dared, marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites that adorned the cave. The experience was both awe-inspiring and slightly eerie, a reminder of the powerful forces that shape our planet. It was not recommended to enter without basic speleology gear and knowledge, and definitely not during rainy weather.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not on the surface, but in the hidden depths of the earth.
Conquering Papakefala Summit: Views Worth the Climb

Experience the stunning beauty of Papakefala Summit and Kormokopos Cave Trail, a hiker's paradise in the heart of Crete, Greece.
After emerging from the depths of Drakolaki Cave, we decided to tackle another challenge: the Papakefala summit and Kormokopos cave trail. The trail started in Agios Ioannis, and we were soon ascending again, this time through a lush forest. The shade was a welcome respite from the midday sun, and the air was filled with the scent of pine and cypress. This part of the hike was particularly enjoyable for Marko, who loves playing hide-and-seek among the trees.
The hike to Papakefala summit was steep, but the views along the way were incredible. We paused frequently to catch our breath and take in the panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. Reaching the summit (1015m) was a moment of triumph, a testament to our collective determination. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, and the view from the top was simply breathtaking, overlooking Eligia Gorge and Agia Roumeli.
From the summit, we continued to Kormokopos Cave, a relatively short detour. The cave itself was more of a large overhang, offering shelter and stunning views. We took some time to rest and refuel, enjoying the peace and quiet of this hidden spot. I couldn't help but feel grateful for these moments, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, connecting with nature and with my family.
Seaside Relaxation and Culinary Delights in Agia Roumeli
After our adventurous hikes, we descended back to Agia Roumeli, ready for some well-deserved relaxation. The town, nestled at the mouth of the Samaria Gorge, has a laid-back charm that immediately puts you at ease. We strolled along the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the gentle sea breeze. Marko, of course, couldn't resist the urge to splash in the waves, his laughter echoing along the shore.
For lunch, we chose Taverna Tarra, a local favorite known for its traditional Greek cuisine.

We feasted on fresh seafood, grilled vegetables, and a delicious Greek salad, all washed down with local wine. The food was simple but flavorful, a perfect reflection of the local culture. As we ate, we watched the boats come and go, ferrying hikers and tourists to and from the Samaria Gorge.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Liviko bar, a charming spot known for its relaxed atmosphere.

We sipped on refreshing drinks, enjoying the stunning views of the Libyan Sea. The sky was ablaze with color, a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and discovery. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Chania by E-Bike and visit Eleftherios Venizelos House [Ivan tomorrow itinerary]. I am looking forward to a change of pace and a chance to delve deeper into Crete's rich history.
Today was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often the ones that take you off the beaten path. Crete is more than just the Samaria Gorge; it's a land of hidden caves, challenging summits, and charming seaside towns. It's a place where adventure and relaxation go hand in hand, and where every corner holds a new surprise. As we head into the final days of our trip, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created. I am already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may take us.
