Day 8: A Farewell to the Alps: Reflecting on Triglav's Majesty
Saying goodbye to Triglav National Park with stunning Fusine Lakes, thrilling Soča Gorge, and delicious Slovenian cuisine. A perfect finale!
A Fond Farewell to Triglav
As our family adventure in Triglav National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. From the serene mornings in our campsite to the exhilarating hikes and breathtaking vistas, this trip has been a true balm for the soul. Today, our final day, was no exception, filled with natural wonders and culinary delights that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Slovenia.
Our day began, as most have, with a hearty breakfast at Danica Guesthouse. Greta, Marko, and I enjoyed the variety of choices, fueling up for our last day of exploration. I must say, the staff has been incredibly kind and helpful throughout our stay, making us feel right at home. The modern and cozy atmosphere of the Guesthouse was a welcome start to the day.
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards our first destination: the enchanting Laghi di Fusine. Though technically just across the border in Italy, these lakes are an unmissable gem when visiting the area. The drive itself was scenic, winding through charming alpine villages. As we approached, the towering peaks of the Julian Alps reflected in the crystal-clear waters, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Marko was particularly excited, pointing out the various shades of blue and green in the lake. We took a leisurely stroll along the circular trail, soaking in the stunning views. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. It was the perfect spot for some family photos, capturing the beauty of the landscape and the joy on our faces. The ease of access made it a great destination for families with children.

The beauty of nature is a gift that keeps on giving, reminding us to appreciate the simple wonders around us.
Leaving the serene beauty of Laghi di Fusine behind, we embarked on a drive towards the Great Soča Gorge. The winding roads offered glimpses of the Soča River, its emerald-green waters beckoning us closer. Arriving at the gorge, we were immediately struck by the sheer power of nature. The Soča River has carved a dramatic, narrow passage through the rocks, creating a stunning display of raw beauty. Marko, ever the curious one, peppered me with questions about how the gorge was formed, and I did my best to explain the forces of erosion and time. Greta and I held hands as we navigated the paths along the gorge, marveling at the vibrant colors and the sound of the rushing water. The Great Soča Gorge is truly a natural masterpiece.

After a morning filled with exploration, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We headed to Restaurant Bohinj Sunrose 7, a place recommended for its local cuisine and riverside setting. The restaurant did not disappoint. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the picturesque views of the river and the surrounding mountains. I opted for a traditional Slovenian dish, while Greta enjoyed a vegetarian option. Marko, of course, chose something involving potatoes. The service was excellent, and the chef even came out to greet us, ensuring that everything was to our liking. It was a truly delightful culinary experience, showcasing the best of Bohinj's flavors.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, we made our way towards Bled, eager to experience one last Slovenian sunset. Before dinner, though, we decided to stop by the Tropical bar for a quick drink. Marko enjoyed a scoop of gelato, while Greta and I savored a refreshing beverage. It was a lively spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

For our final dinner in Slovenia, we chose the Bled Castle Restaurant, perched high above Lake Bled. The setting was nothing short of magical. As we ascended to the castle, the panoramic views of the lake, the island church, and the surrounding mountains unfolded before us. The restaurant itself exuded elegance and charm. We indulged in a delicious meal, savoring modern interpretations of traditional Slovenian recipes. The wine list was impressive, and our waiter expertly paired our dishes with local wines. Marko, usually a picky eater, surprised us by devouring his entire meal. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the lake, I raised my glass in a toast to Slovenia, to Triglav National Park, and to the unforgettable memories we had created as a family. It was a fairytale experience. There were some events happening in Bled, but we enjoyed the quiet more.

And just like that, our Triglav adventure comes to an end. Tomorrow, we begin our drive back to Heidelberg, our hearts full of cherished moments and our minds brimming with stunning images. I am already looking forward to our next family adventure, wherever it may take us.

Thank you, Triglav National Park, for the adventure of a lifetime.
Looking back on our time in Triglav, a few essentials proved invaluable. Of course, our hiking boots were a must-have for navigating the trails, and our camping gear allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the park's tranquility. Warm clothing was essential for the cooler evenings, and sunscreen was a lifesaver during our sunny hikes. I was glad I remembered to bring the first aid kit and binoculars. My camera let me capture all the stunning views. I did forget insect repellent and a portable phone charger, though! We managed without, but I'll be sure to pack them next time.
Until next time, happy travels!
