A Day of Discoveries

Today was a symphony of sights and tastes, perfectly encapsulating the essence of Triglav National Park. From panoramic valley views to a hidden waterfall, and ending with a culinary exploration, it was a day where every moment felt like a discovery. Slovenia continues to enchant us with its diverse beauty and warm hospitality.

As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. The beauty of Slovenia is truly captivating, and I'm excited to share our adventures with you all.

Our sixth day in Triglav National Park began with the promise of stunning vistas and hidden natural gems. After a hearty breakfast at Art Hotel Kristal in Restavracija pri Lovcu, BOHINJ, Bohinjsko Jezero, we set off to explore the Sava Valley and the Triglav Viewpoint. The hotel, with its charming Alpine ambiance, provided the perfect start to our day. Greta particularly enjoyed the selection of local cheeses, while Marko was thrilled with the freshly baked bread. I appreciated the strong coffee, which gave me the energy boost I needed for the day's adventures.

Driving through the Sava Valley was like entering a postcard. The landscape unfolded with lush meadows, quaint villages, and the Sava River snaking its way through the valley floor. The views were simply breathtaking, especially with the Julian Alps providing a dramatic backdrop. Even Marko, usually engrossed in his games, was glued to the window, pointing out cows and hay bales.

Reaching the Triglav viewpoint, we were rewarded with a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The majestic Mount Triglav stood tall, a symbol of Slovenia's natural beauty. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photo could truly do justice to the awe-inspiring view. We spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the scenery and feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such splendor.

The Enigmatic Slap Iglica

Next on our itinerary was Slap Iglica, a waterfall hidden away in the forests near Bohinjska Bela. The drive to the trailhead was an adventure in itself, with narrow winding roads leading us deeper into the park's embrace. As a software engineer, I appreciate the precision and beauty of natural formations, and I was eager to see what Slap Iglica had in store.

The hike to the waterfall was moderately challenging, with a steep ascent through a dense forest. The trail was well-maintained, but sturdy hiking boots were definitely a must. Marko, ever the energetic one, scampered ahead, while Greta and I took a more leisurely pace, enjoying the fresh air and the sounds of nature. I was glad I remembered to pack the hiking boots, one of the trip essentials I had prepared for. It would have been a disaster if we had to hike in sneakers!

After about an hour of hiking, we finally reached Slap Iglica. The waterfall, though not as voluminous as some others in the park, had a unique charm. It cascaded down a moss-covered rock face into a small pool, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere. The sunlight filtering through the trees added to the magic, casting dappled shadows on the water.
Sometimes, the greatest beauty is found in the most unexpected and hidden places.

We spent some time at the waterfall, taking photos and simply enjoying the tranquility. Marko, of course, couldn't resist splashing around in the pool, much to Greta's amusement. As we hiked back down, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. We had discovered a hidden gem, a place of peace and beauty that few tourists get to see.

A Culinary Journey

After our adventurous morning, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We headed to Restaurant Majerca, known for its traditional Slovenian cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant, nestled in a charming village, exuded a welcoming vibe. We were immediately seated at a table with a view of the surrounding mountains.

For lunch, I opted for the *jota*, a hearty bean and sauerkraut stew, while Greta chose the *štruklji*, rolled dumplings filled with cottage cheese. Marko, predictably, went for the *kranjska klobasa*, a traditional Slovenian sausage. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The *jota* was particularly flavorful, with a perfect balance of sourness and spice. Greta raved about the *štruklji*, saying it was the best she had ever tasted. Marko devoured his sausage with gusto, declaring it the best sausage ever!.

In the late afternoon, after a short rest at our campsite, we ventured out for dinner at Restavracija 1906, located in Hotel Triglav near Lake Bled. This restaurant promised a fine dining experience with a modern twist on traditional Slovenian dishes. The setting was elegant, with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The menu at Restavracija 1906 was a culinary journey through Slovenia's diverse regions. I started with the marinated trout, followed by the roasted duck breast with red cabbage and pear pie. Greta chose the almond ricotta on a nori cracker, followed by the Zander fillet. Marko, after some deliberation, opted for a simplified version of the menu, featuring grilled chicken and potatoes. The presentation of each dish was a work of art, and the flavors were exquisite.

My trout was delicate and flavorful, with a hint of balsamic and apricot. The duck breast was perfectly cooked, with a crispy skin and tender meat. Greta was equally impressed with her choices, praising the innovative vegan starter and the perfectly cooked Zander fillet. Even Marko enjoyed his simplified meal, although he did sneak a few bites of my duck.

Evening Drinks and Reflections

To cap off our day, we decided to visit À propos Cocktail Bar for a nightcap. The bar, known for its creative cocktails and stylish ambiance, was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I ordered a local craft beer, while Greta opted for a signature cocktail. Marko, of course, stuck to his usual apple juice.

As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. We had seen stunning landscapes, discovered a hidden waterfall, and savored delicious Slovenian cuisine. It was a day that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Triglav National Park: a blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and culinary delights.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited to explore the Zelenci Nature Reserve and the Planica Nordic Centre. The Nordic Centre is the home of ski jumping, which I find incredibly interesting from an engineering perspective, and Marko will be thrilled to run around the Planica area. I'm also hoping to find some insect repellent at the Boutique Gooda Bled, as I seem to have forgotten to pack it.

As the day comes to a close, I am thankful for the day and excited for what awaits us tomorrow. I am also glad that Greta and Marko are enjoying the trip as much as I am. I know that these are the memories that we will cherish forever.
