Solo Escape to the Serenity of Rondane National Park
Day 2: Chasing Curves and Sipping Spirits: A Day of Delight in Rondane
Exploring scenic routes, savoring Norwegian cuisine, and discovering unique aquavit in Rondane National Park. A solo traveler's immersive experience.
Winding Roads and Warming Spirits
Today was all about embracing the journey, both literally and figuratively. I set out to explore the scenic roads of Rondane National Park, indulge in some local flavors, and perhaps even discover a new favorite aquavit. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to wander, to stop whenever something catches my eye, and to fully immerse myself in the present moment.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. I fueled up with a buffet of traditional Norwegian fare, including freshly baked bread, smoked salmon, and various cheeses. It was exactly the kind of meal I needed to prepare for a day of driving and exploring. The resort itself seemed quite cozy. I could see why families and ski enthusiasts would find it appealing. I made a mental note to perhaps return with Greta and Marko sometime in the future, especially given the pool and other family-friendly amenities.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I hopped into my rental car and set off towards Kuse Svingen. The drive itself was breathtaking. The landscape was a winter wonderland, with snow-covered trees and mountains stretching as far as the eye could see. The roads were well-maintained, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride. Kuse Svingen turned out to be a captivating spot, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I stopped to take some photos and simply soak in the beauty of the area.

Next on the itinerary was Rondasvingen. I was curious to see how it compared to Kuse Svingen. As I drove, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this trip was from my usual family vacations. While I cherish those moments with Greta and Marko, there's something incredibly liberating about traveling alone. It allows me to connect with myself and the world around me on a deeper level.

Rondasvingen offered equally impressive vistas, each curve in the road revealing a new panorama of snow-dusted peaks and valleys. I found myself pulling over frequently, not just to capture the scenery with my camera, but to truly absorb the tranquility of the Norwegian wilderness. It was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me.
Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not about where you go, but about what you find within yourself along the way.
For lunch, I stopped at Rondane Friluftssenter AS. The pizza restaurant was just what I needed. After a morning of driving and sightseeing, a warm and satisfying meal was a welcome treat. I opted for a traditional Norwegian pizza, topped with reindeer meat and local cheese. It was delicious and gave me a taste of the region's culinary heritage.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way to Rondane Høyfjellshotell for dinner. The hotel had a cozy atmosphere , and the restaurant served hearty, traditional dishes. I decided to try the reindeer stew, a local specialty. It was rich, flavorful, and perfect for a chilly evening in the mountains. The friendly staff and warm ambiance made it a truly enjoyable dining experience.

But the highlight of the day, without a doubt, was my visit to Aquavitfjøset Spidsbergseter. This unique bar, located in an old stone barn dating back to 1850, boasts an impressive collection of nearly 220 different types of aquavit. As someone who appreciates a good spirit, I was in heaven. I sampled a few different varieties, each with its own distinct flavor profile and history. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about aquavit, sharing stories and insights that added to the experience. I even learned about the traditional methods of distilling and aging aquavit, which gave me a newfound appreciation for this Norwegian spirit.

The bar itself was charming, with its rustic stone walls and cozy lighting. It felt like stepping back in time, and I could imagine generations of Norwegians gathering here to share stories and enjoy a drink. I savored each sip of aquavit, letting the flavors linger on my palate. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Rondane National Park has exceeded my expectations, offering not only stunning landscapes but also a glimpse into Norwegian culture and hospitality. Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of the area, visiting the NASJONAL TURISTVEG Rondane - SCENIC ROUTE - START/END and Rullesteinen. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Rondane Gjestegård for breakfast, Rondane Fjellstue for lunch and Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel for dinner. And perhaps I'll even stop by Kolonialen Pub for a nightcap. But for now, I'm content to curl up in my cozy accommodation and dream of snow-covered mountains and warming spirits.
Before drifting off to sleep, I realized I still needed to find a portable charger, since I forgot to pack one. I will also see if I can find a pair of binoculars at Lundes turisthandel tomorrow. Being able to see the wildlife from a distance would be amazing!
This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, explore new places, and rediscover myself in the process. I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Greta and Marko, and perhaps even planning a return trip together in the future.
