Homeward Bound, but Not Before One Last Look

As my solo adventure in Rondane National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, of having truly immersed myself in the tranquility and raw beauty of the Norwegian wilderness. But there's also a pang of sadness, knowing that this chapter is coming to an end. Today was all about savoring those last moments, breathing in the crisp mountain air, and reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had over the past nine days.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Gjestegård. I enjoyed a traditional Norwegian spread, fueling up for one last day of exploration. The spread included fresh bread, local cheeses, and smoked salmon, all of which were delicious. After breakfast, I decided to take a leisurely drive to Strømbu, a well-known rest area and starting point for hikes in Rondane National Park.

The drive itself was stunning, with the snow-capped peaks of Rondane providing a breathtaking backdrop. As I drove, I thought about Greta and Marko, and how much they would have loved this scenery. I made a mental note to bring them here next year, maybe during the summer months when the hiking trails are more accessible. I finally arrived at Strømbu, and I was immediately struck by the modern architecture of the rest area. The building is designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape, with a roof terrace that offers panoramic views of the Atna River and the Rondane mountains. I spent some time on the terrace, soaking in the scenery and reflecting on my journey. It was the perfect spot for contemplation, surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we embark on alone, allowing us to discover not only the world around us, but also the depths within ourselves.

Next on my list was Karlsvogna Fjellbad, a water park nestled in the heart of Venabygd.

It seemed like a slightly unusual choice for a winter trip to Norway, but I was intrigued by the idea of a water park surrounded by snow-covered mountains. When I got to Karlsvogna Fjellbad, I was immediately impressed by the facilities. There were several water slides, swimming pools, and relaxation areas, all designed to cater to families and individuals seeking a day of fun in the water. I decided to take a dip in the indoor pool, enjoying the warmth of the water as I looked out at the snowy landscape. It was a surreal experience, swimming in a tropical oasis while surrounded by a winter wonderland.

For lunch, I stopped at Rondane Fjellstue, a charming mountain lodge with a rich history dating back to the early 1900s.

The lodge had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, with a crackling fireplace and walls adorned with vintage photographs. I ordered a traditional Norwegian meal of *rømmegrøt* (sour cream porridge) with *spekemat* (cured meats), savoring the hearty flavors and the warmth of the lodge. As I ate, I imagined what it must have been like to stay here a century ago, when travelers would seek refuge from the harsh mountain weather.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Koia Afterski, a cozy bar known for its après-ski atmosphere.

Located near the slopes of Kvitfjell, Koia is a popular spot for skiers and snowboarders to unwind after a day on the mountain. The bar had a rustic, inviting ambiance, with ski memorabilia adorning the walls and a friendly staff serving up local beers and creative cocktails. I ordered a pint of Norwegian craft beer and chatted with some of the locals, sharing stories of my adventures in Rondane. It was a great way to end the day, surrounded by good company and the warmth of Norwegian hospitality.

For my final dinner in Rondane, I chose Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel, a mountain hotel renowned for its stunning location and panoramic views.

The hotel is situated at an altitude of 1000 meters, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring the flavors of Norway one last time. As I ate, I watched the sunset over the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a truly magical moment, a perfect ending to my solo adventure in Rondane.

As I prepare to leave Rondane tomorrow, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had. This solo trip has been a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with nature and find peace in the solitude of the mountains. I've hiked through snowy landscapes, explored charming villages, and savored the flavors of Norwegian cuisine. I've learned to appreciate the simple things in life, the beauty of a sunrise, the warmth of a crackling fire, the kindness of strangers.

I'll be taking a train or bus back to Oslo tomorrow, and then flying back to Frankfurt. I'm looking forward to seeing Greta and Marko again, to sharing my stories and photos with them. But I know that a part of me will always remain in Rondane, in the heart of the Norwegian wilderness.

This trip has reminded me of the importance of taking time for myself, of escaping the stresses of daily life and reconnecting with nature. It's a lesson I'll carry with me long after I leave Rondane, a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we embark on alone. As I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with a sense of peace and contentment, grateful for the memories I've made and the lessons I've learned. Rondane, you've been an incredible host, and I know I'll be back someday.

And with that, my friends, I bid you adieu from the serene landscapes of Rondane National Park. Stay tuned for my next adventure, wherever the road may lead!

Safe travels and happy exploring!
