Day 5: Ravello's Romantic Heights: Gardens, Views, and Artistic Delights
Explore the enchanting Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, savoring stunning gardens, breathtaking views, and local flavors with friends.
A Day of Beauty and Inspiration in Ravello
Today was a day of pure enchantment as we explored the stunning heights of Ravello. After a hearty breakfast, fueled by strong Italian coffee, at Sensi Restaurant, my friends and I set out to discover the gardens and vistas that this charming town is famous for. It’s amazing how much history and beauty can be packed into one day, and I’m already looking forward to sharing these memories with Olivia and Thando back home in Kelowna.
Our first stop was Villa Rufolo. The moment we stepped through the ancient arched entrance, we were transported to another world. The gardens were in full bloom, a riot of colors cascading down the terraces. It felt like walking into a painting, with the bright blue sky and the sparkling sea providing the perfect backdrop. The architecture itself is a fascinating blend of styles, reflecting the many centuries of history held within these walls. The Tower Gateway, with its intricate details, was particularly impressive. I could almost imagine the Rufolo family, who built this villa in the 13th century, hosting lavish banquets for royalty here.

Wandering through the gardens, I couldn't help but think of Wagner, who found inspiration here for the gardens of Klingsor in his opera Parsifal. It's easy to see why – the atmosphere is truly magical. The views from the terraces are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Amalfi Coast. We spent a good couple of hours just soaking it all in, taking photos, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It's a place that invites you to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.
The beauty of Ravello seeps into your soul, leaving you forever changed.
Next on our list was Villa Cimbrone Gardens. If Villa Rufolo was enchanting, Villa Cimbrone was awe-inspiring. As we walked along the Avenue of Abundance, lined with ancient trees and statues, I felt a sense of timelessness. The gardens here are more expansive, with different sections each offering a unique experience. The Rose Garden was particularly lovely, with its fragrant blooms and elegant design. But the highlight, without a doubt, was the Terrace of Infinity. Standing at the edge of that belvedere, with the endless expanse of the sea stretching out before us, was an unforgettable experience. It felt like we were standing on the edge of the world.

The history of Villa Cimbrone is just as fascinating as its beauty. Originally a farmhouse dating back to the 11th century, it was transformed into a romantic English castle in the early 20th century by Lord Grimthorpe. The gardens were redesigned with the help of Vita Sackville-West, blending English and Italian styles to create a truly unique landscape. It's a place that has attracted artists, writers, and intellectuals for centuries, and it's easy to see why. The views, the gardens, the history – it all combines to create a truly special place.
After all that exploring, we were definitely ready for lunch. We headed to Donna Emma, a local restaurant known for its authentic Italian cuisine. We feasted on fresh pasta, seafood, and local wine, all while enjoying the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect way to refuel and recharge before our next adventure.

In the late afternoon, we decided to check out Masaniello Art Café. It was the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a drink. The café has a cool, artistic vibe, with interesting artwork and a relaxed atmosphere. I tried one of their signature cocktails, which was both inventive and delicious. It was a great way to end the day, sipping on a drink and chatting with my friends about all the amazing things we had seen and done.

For dinner, we chose Hostaria Acquolina, a charming restaurant with a reputation for its delicious seafood dishes. And it certainly didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was simply outstanding. I opted for the grilled octopus, which was cooked to perfection. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I feel so grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Ravello with my friends. It's a place that has captured my heart, and I know I'll be dreaming of those gardens and vistas for a long time to come. It makes me think about Thando and how much he would love running around those gardens, exploring all the hidden corners and discovering new wonders. I'll have to bring him and Olivia here one day.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore Montepertuso il buco and Belvedere Di Paipo. I’ve heard the views are incredible, and I’m excited to see what other hidden gems we can discover. We’re also planning to grab breakfast at Trattoria dei Cartari, lunch at Dei Cappuccini, and dinner at Trattoria San Giuseppe. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Cose Belle. It’s going to be another amazing day on the Amalfi Coast, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
One thing I almost forgot to mention - I really need to find an adapter plug for Italian outlets! It completely slipped my mind before leaving Kelowna and I'm constantly battling to keep my devices charged. And sunglasses! The glare off the Mediterranean is intense, and I'm definitely feeling the lack of proper eye protection.
Until tomorrow!
