Exploring Franconian Switzerland: A Scenic Adventure with Friends
Day 11: A Day of Castles, Forests, and Franconian Delights
Exploring the historic Burgruine Leienfels and the scenic Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz, capped off with local brews and hearty meals.
Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present
Today was a day of diving deep into Franconian Switzerland's history and natural beauty. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore ancient ruins and lush landscapes, all while savoring the region's culinary offerings. It was a blend of adventure and relaxation, a perfect way to soak in the local culture.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Arivo Aparthotel Restaurant. Nothing fancy, but a solid start to fuel our explorations. After breakfast, we packed our essentials and set off for Burgruine Leienfels.

The drive itself was scenic, winding through charming villages and rolling hills, quintessential Franconian Switzerland. It reminded me of drives back in the UK, albeit with better beer awaiting us at the end of the day.
Exploring Burgruine Leienfels
The Burgruine Leienfels stands atop the Leienfelser Schlossberg, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The crisp October air added a touch of drama to the already impressive ruins. The castle's history is fascinating, dating back to the early 14th century. Originally built by the Egloffstein family, it saw its fair share of battles and destruction over the centuries.

Exploring the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like back then. The climb up to the castle was a bit challenging, but the view from the top was well worth it. You could see for miles, the landscape stretching out like a patchwork quilt of forests and fields. It’s easy to see why they built a castle here. I took a few photos, trying to capture the essence of the place, the way the stone still stands defiant against the elements.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet whispers of history echoing through ancient stones.
After the castle, we decided to immerse ourselves in nature at Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz - Veldensteiner Forst. This nature park is vast, offering numerous hiking trails and scenic spots. We opted for a moderate trail, hoping to get a good taste of the forest without exhausting ourselves. The trail led us through dense woods, where the sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city. We even stumbled upon a few interesting rock formations, typical of the Franconian Switzerland region.

Lunch in Forchheim
By lunchtime, we were all ravenous. We drove to Forchheim, a town not too far from the forest, and found ourselves at Ratskeller München. Now, I know what you’re thinking – Ratskeller München in Forchheim? Isn’t that a Munich thing? Well, apparently, the name is a bit misleading. The food was hearty and traditional, just what we needed after a morning of hiking. I had the Schäufele, a Franconian pork shoulder, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. My friends tried the Bratwurst and some local beer, all of which were excellent. I must admit, the beer was a highlight. As a brewery tour guide, I appreciate a good brew, and Franconian beer is in a league of its own.

An Evening in Gräfenberg and Waischenfeld
With our bellies full, we decided to explore a bit more of the region. Our next stop was Gräfenberg, where we planned to visit Friedmanns Bräustüberl – Wirtshaus & Biergarten. Unfortunately, it was closed when we arrived. Seems like Monday isn't the best day to visit this particular establishment.

Undeterred, we continued our journey to Waischenfeld for dinner at Burg Waischenfeld. This restaurant is located near the Burg Waischenfeld, offering a unique dining experience. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxing evening. The menu featured traditional Franconian cuisine, with a focus on regional ingredients. I opted for the Käsespätzle, a cheesy noodle dish that was both comforting and delicious. The others tried the Schnitzel and Currywurst, all of which were well-prepared and satisfying. Of course, we also sampled some local beers, rounding out the meal perfectly.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our adventures. From the historical depths of Burgruine Leienfels to the natural beauty of Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz - Veldensteiner Forst, and the culinary delights of Forchheim and Waischenfeld, it was a day well spent. Even the closed Biergarten in Gräfenberg couldn't dampen our spirits. It just means we'll have to come back another time.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore Neideck Castle and Höhlenruine Riesenburg. I've heard Neideck Castle has some amazing views, and I’m keen to see the Höhlenruine Riesenburg, a cave ruin. We’ll also be stopping by Landgasthaus Ziegelscheune for lunch and Kaiserschmarrn-Alm for dinner. Plus, a visit to Fünf-Seidla-Steig for a bit of shopping. Should be another great day!
As I sit here, writing this blog post with a belly full of Franconian food and a head full of memories, I can’t help but feel grateful for this experience. Franconian Switzerland has a way of captivating you, drawing you in with its charm and beauty. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. And the beer, of course, is an added bonus.
Good night from Franconian Switzerland, and stay tuned for more adventures tomorrow!
