Exploring Franconian Switzerland: A Scenic Adventure with Friends
Day 4: A Royal Ascent and Brews of Franconia
Exploring the historic Pottenstein Castle and savoring Franconian beer culture with brewery visits and local flavors. A day of history and hops!
Castle Walls and Brewery Halls
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the historical grandeur of a medieval castle with the down-to-earth charm of Franconian brewing traditions. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, especially when good friends and good beer are involved. Franconian Switzerland continues to surprise and delight at every turn, offering a unique blend of experiences that cater to both the history buff and the beer enthusiast in me.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Arivo Aparthotel Restaurant. I always appreciate a good, solid breakfast to fuel a day of exploring, and the Arivo didn’t disappoint. After breakfast, we set off for Pottenstein Castle.

The drive itself was scenic, with the rolling hills of Franconian Switzerland painted in the warm hues of autumn. I couldn’t help but think of Olivia and how much she would have enjoyed this drive; she always appreciates the beauty of the countryside.
Arriving at Pottenstein, the castle dominated the landscape, perched high on a rocky outcrop. It’s an impressive sight, and I was immediately eager to explore its ancient walls. The history of Pottenstein Castle is fascinating, dating back to the 11th century. It was originally built to guard the area and has been owned by various families throughout the centuries. Walking through the castle, I couldn’t help but imagine the lives of those who had lived within its walls, from noble families to soldiers defending their land.

The castle museum offered a glimpse into the past, with exhibits showcasing local history, medieval artifacts, and the castle’s own story. One room is dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, who resided at the castle around 1228. The views from the castle ramparts were breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of Pottenstein and the surrounding Franconian countryside. I took plenty of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, though a photo never quite does justice to the real thing.
Sometimes, the best stories are found not in history books, but in the stones beneath our feet.
After our historical immersion, it was time for lunch. We headed to Betzenstube, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Franconian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that perfectly complemented the surrounding landscape. I ordered a Schäuferla, a traditional Franconian pork shoulder dish, while the others tried various local specialties. The food was hearty and delicious, providing the perfect fuel for the afternoon’s adventures.

With our bellies full, we set off to Brewery Rittmayer Hallerndorf OHG. As a brewery tour guide myself, I was particularly excited about this visit. Rittmayer is one of the oldest breweries in the Forchheim district, dating back to 1422. The brewery tour was fascinating, offering insights into the brewing process and the history of the brewery. I was impressed by their commitment to using local ingredients and traditional brewing methods. They even have a coat of arms certificate from the Count of Kulmbach because of their good beer.

The tour concluded with a tasting of Rittmayer’s beers. I sampled a few different varieties, including their Kellerbier and a seasonal brew. Each beer was unique and flavorful, reflecting the brewery’s dedication to quality. I even picked up a few bottles to take back to the Arivo, to share with the others later in the evening. I also got a bottle of Zwickelbier after reading a review that mentioned it.
For dinner, we ventured to Brauhaus am Kreuzberg, a brewery and restaurant located on a hill overlooking the Kreuzberg. The Brauhaus is known for its festive atmosphere, great food, and, of course, its beer. The place was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the lively atmosphere. Luckily, we had made a reservation, as the place fills up quickly. The Brauhaus also has a large playground, which would be great if Ethan were here.

I ordered their Kreuzbergator, a seasonal beer, and another Schäuferla. The beer was excellent, and the food was just as good. The atmosphere was infectious, with everyone enjoying themselves and the camaraderie of sharing a meal and a few beers. It reminded me of the pub back in Truro, where everyone knew each other and a good time was always guaranteed.
As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to Forchheim, tired but content. It had been a day of exploring history, savoring local flavors, and enjoying the company of good friends. As I reflect on the day, I am struck by how much Franconian Switzerland has to offer. From its ancient castles to its vibrant brewing traditions, this region is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore some of the caves in the area, including the Schönsteinhöhle and the Devil's Cave. I’m looking forward to another day of adventure, uncovering more of the hidden gems of Franconian Switzerland. We'll also be stopping by Löwenbräukeller Buttenheim for a drink. For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for whatever tomorrow may bring.
I’m also making a mental note to buy a power adapter when I get back, as I’m constantly running out of battery on my camera and phone. It’s a small thing, but it would make documenting these adventures a lot easier. And perhaps some sunscreen, even though it's October, you never know!
Join me in discovering the stunning landscapes and cultural gems of Franconian Switzerland, with friends by my side for an unforgettable adventure.
