A Day of Art and Wonder on Naoshima
Today marked the beginning of our Naoshima adventure, and what a start it was! Immersing ourselves in the island's unique blend of art, architecture, and natural beauty was an experience that truly stimulated the senses. From the moment we set foot on this 'Art Island,' we knew we were in for something special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. Olivia and I both enjoyed their famous 'Happy Scones,' while Ethan opted for a more traditional Japanese breakfast set. It's a charming little spot, and I could see why the locals love it. The cafe is managed by a nutritionist who creates seasonal menus using local Setouchi ingredients. I must admit, even for a bloke who enjoys a good pint more than fancy cuisine, the scones were indeed delightful.

Fueled up and ready, we headed to the Chichu Art Museum. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by Tadao Ando, built mostly underground to minimize its impact on the landscape. The architecture is stunning, and the way natural light is used to illuminate the exhibits is simply breathtaking.

Seeing Monet’s 'Water Lilies' in such a unique setting was an experience I’ll never forget. The way the light shifted across the paintings made them seem alive. Ethan, surprisingly, was captivated by James Turrell's light installations. Olivia, ever the thoughtful one, was fascinated by Walter De Maria's 'Time/Timeless/No Time'. The museum definitely lived up to its reputation, and I'm glad we booked our tickets in advance, as it tends to get quite busy.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on our list was the Benesse House Museum. This place is more than just a museum; it's a hotel, too. The concept is 'coexistence of nature, art and architecture,' and they’ve nailed it. The museum is set on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, with large windows that bring the natural surroundings inside.

We wandered through the galleries, admiring works by Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jasper Johns. But the real treat was exploring the outdoor sculptures scattered around the grounds. These pieces are designed to integrate with the natural environment, and it's amazing how art and nature blend together here.
Of course, no trip to Naoshima would be complete without seeing Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin. This iconic sculpture sits at the end of a pier, overlooking the sea. It’s a bit of a walk from the museum, but the views are worth it. The pumpkin itself is striking, a vibrant yellow with black polka dots that stand out against the blue water. It’s become a symbol of Naoshima, and I can see why.

We spent a good hour taking photos and simply enjoying the view. Ethan, being a teenager, was more interested in posting them on his social media, but even he had to admit it was pretty cool. Olivia and I reminisced about our younger days, discussing how art can sometimes be a bit pretentious, but this pumpkin, it's just fun !
For lunch, we decided to try the Terrace Restaurant at Benesse House. The restaurant boasts amazing views of the beach. While they are run by Japanese staff, the restaurant is owned by an English family. The menu changes daily depending on the fresh local foods available. I opted for the tempura fish and chilled corn soup. Delicious!

After a full day of art and walking, we were ready for a relaxing dinner. We chose New Olympia for some authentic sushi. This place is a local gem, run by a father-son duo. The sushi was incredibly fresh, and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. I tried the assorted sashimi plate, and it was some of the best I’ve ever had. Olivia enjoyed the fried octopus, while Ethan, surprisingly, went for the sushi.

As we walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the island was quiet and peaceful. The air was filled with the scent of the sea, and the stars were out in full force. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Art House Project: Minamidera, Lee Ufan Museum, and perhaps even brave the Naoshima Public Bath 'I Love Yu'. I've heard it's quite an experience, and I'm always up for trying something new.

Naoshima has exceeded all my expectations. It's a place where art, nature, and culture come together in a way that is both inspiring and relaxing. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
It's funny, I didn't pack an umbrella, and I think I left my portable phone charger back in Kelowna! Hopefully, we won't need either. I guess that's what happens when you're too eager to start your art adventure!
