Immerse yourself in Assisi's spiritual heart, exploring sacred sites and savoring local cuisine with family on an unforgettable day.
Assisi's Embrace: A Journey Through Faith and History
Today marked the beginning of our family's exploration of Assisi, and what an incredible start it was! From the moment we arrived, the town's serene atmosphere and rich history enveloped us. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through cobblestone streets lined with ancient buildings, each with its own story to tell. With Lena and Sophia by my side, I was eager to uncover the spiritual and cultural treasures of this remarkable place.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Trattoria Da Erminio. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of scrambled eggs and prosciutto, while Lena enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and Sophia devoured a stack of pancakes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. According to some reviews, the fire-grilled chicken breast is perfect. We will need to try it during our stay.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi. As we approached, the sheer grandeur of the basilica took my breath away. The pink and white stone facade gleamed in the morning sun, and the intricate details of the architecture hinted at the artistic treasures within. The Basilica is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi.

We decided to start with the Lower Basilica, a dimly lit, Romanesque space adorned with stunning frescoes by renowned artists like Giotto and Cimabue. Walking through the basilica, I felt a sense of reverence and awe. The artistry and devotion poured into every brushstroke were palpable. Sophia was particularly fascinated by the vibrant colors and expressive figures in the frescoes. I tried my best to explain the stories behind the paintings, hoping to instill in her a sense of appreciation for art and history.
Descending into the crypt, we paid our respects at the tomb of Saint Francis. The atmosphere was hushed and solemn, and I couldn't help but feel moved by the profound impact this humble man had on the world. It was a moment of reflection, a chance to contemplate the values of compassion, simplicity, and faith that Saint Francis embodied.
Assisi, a beacon of peace and spirituality, invites you to wander its ancient streets and discover the profound beauty that lies within.
Emerging from the Lower Basilica, we ascended to the Upper Basilica, a soaring Gothic space filled with light and air. The stained-glass windows cast colorful patterns on the walls, and the frescoes by Giotto depicted scenes from the life of Saint Francis with remarkable detail and emotion. It was interesting to see the Gothic style in the Basilica. As we wandered through the basilica, I was struck by the contrast between the Romanesque Lower Basilica and the Gothic Upper Basilica. Each space offered a unique perspective on the life and legacy of Saint Francis, and together they formed a powerful testament to the enduring power of faith and art.
After spending several hours exploring the basilica, we emerged into the Piazza del Comune, the heart of Assisi. The piazza was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike milling about, soaking in the atmosphere. The weather in Assisi in October is generally mild, with highs around 68°F (20°C) and lows around 49°F (9°C). Today was no exception, with clear skies and a gentle breeze making it perfect for strolling and sightseeing.

The Piazza del Comune is the main square of Assisi and has been the center of the city's political and social life since Roman times. It is surrounded by several important buildings, including the Temple of Minerva, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, and the Palazzo dei Priori. We took a moment to admire the Fontana dei Tre Leoni, a beautiful fountain that adds to the charm of the square.
Next on our itinerary was the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, a unique and fascinating landmark. What makes this church so special is that it's built within the ancient Roman Temple of Minerva. The facade of the temple, with its six Corinthian columns, is remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into Assisi's Roman past.

Stepping inside the church, we were transported to a different era. The Baroque interior was a stark contrast to the classical facade, creating a captivating blend of styles. I explained to Sophia how the temple had been transformed into a church in the Middle Ages, a testament to the enduring power of faith and adaptation. The church had been restored in 1539 by order of Pope Paul III and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
As we explored the church, I noticed Lena gazing up at the vaulted ceiling, her architect's eye appreciating the intricate details of the design. She pointed out the subtle differences between the Roman and Baroque elements, sharing her insights with Sophia and me. It was moments like these that made our family trips so special, each of us bringing our unique perspectives and passions to the experience.
After immersing ourselves in the history and art of the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, we decided it was time for lunch. We chose Ristorante Bar San Francesco, drawn in by its inviting atmosphere and the promise of delicious Italian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and we were lucky to snag a table with a view of the Piazza del Comune. According to reviews, the restaurant has an excellent location.

We started with a selection of local appetizers, including bruschetta, olives, and cheese. For our main courses, I opted for the lamb, Lena chose the risotto, and Sophia, predictably, went for the spaghetti alla carbonara. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive and friendly. As we ate, we watched the world go by in the piazza, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and enjoying the simple pleasure of sharing a meal together.
After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at HUMILIS Made in Assisi (Boutique Assisi S. Francesco). This charming boutique offers a selection of handcrafted jewelry inspired by the city and its patron saint. Lena was particularly drawn to the intricate designs and the spiritual symbolism of the pieces. I purchased a small silver pendant for Sophia, a reminder of our time in Assisi and the values of faith and compassion that the city represents. HUMILIS was born in 2004 from a deep love for the city of Assisi.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Taverna dei Consoli for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to experience its authentic Umbrian cuisine. The taverna is located in Piazza del Comune. The restaurant's elegant interior, with its stone walls and cozy atmosphere, was the perfect setting for a relaxing evening meal. The restaurant has a terrace overlooking the Piazza del Comune.

We started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, accompanied by a bottle of robust red wine. For our main courses, I chose the ravioli, Lena opted for the veal, and Sophia, adventurous as ever, decided to try the gorgonzola. The food was exceptional, each dish bursting with flavor and prepared with care. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu and offering recommendations.
As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences. We had explored sacred sites, admired stunning art, and savored delicious cuisine. But more importantly, we had connected with each other and with the spirit of Assisi. It was a day of devotion and discovery, a day that would stay with us long after we left this enchanting town.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, Rocca Maggiore, and Eremo delle Carceri. I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring!
