Echoes of Ancient Assisi

Today was a day of venturing off the beaten path, a delightful exploration into the lesser-known corners of Assisi. It’s easy to get swept up in the grandeur of the basilicas, but the true heart of this town lies in its quieter, more intimate spaces. Sophia was especially excited, always eager to uncover secrets and stories tucked away in old stones. Lena and I were equally keen to discover what hidden gems Assisi had to offer beyond its famous landmarks.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at La Fortezza Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of local cheeses and cured meats, while Lena enjoyed a fruit-filled yogurt. Sophia, of course, couldn't resist a warm cornetto. Fuelled up, we set out to explore our first destination: the Chiesa di San Pietro.

The Chiesa di San Pietro, located just outside the main tourist flow, exuded a sense of serene history. Built in the 10th century by Benedictine monks, its Romanesque architecture was a testament to centuries of faith and craftsmanship. The exterior, made of the characteristic pink stone from Mount Subasio, was simple yet elegant, with three rose windows adorning the facade. Inside, the church was a haven of peace. The nave, divided by sturdy pillars, led to a circular apse, and the light filtering through the windows cast a warm glow on the ancient stones. Sophia was fascinated by the Gothic tombs and the repainted frescoes, each telling a story of Assisi's rich past. I found myself contemplating the dedication and artistry of the monks who built and maintained this sacred space for centuries. Lena, with her architect's eye, admired the structural details and the way the building had been restored to highlight its original simplicity.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers.

After soaking in the tranquility of San Pietro, we ventured towards the heart of Assisi to find the Sala Delle Volte.

This subterranean space, located beneath Piazza del Comune, was once part of the ancient Roman forum. Descending into the Sala Delle Volte felt like stepping back in time. The rugged arches, crafted from Assisi stone, created a captivating atmosphere. The space was vast and cool, a stark contrast to the bustling piazza above. We explored the remains of ancient Roman structures, including the foundations of temples and a monumental cistern. Sophia was particularly intrigued by the foundations of the temples and the ancient tabernae, imagining the lively commerce that once filled this space. Lena pointed out the ingenious engineering of the cistern, marveling at how the Romans had managed their water supply. As an English Language Content Editor, I appreciated how the Sala Delle Volte provided a tangible link to Assisi's Roman past, a reminder that this town's history stretched back far beyond the time of Saint Francis.

For lunch, we decided to try La piazzetta delle erbe.

A charming osteria known for its authentic Umbrian cuisine. We secured a table on their terrace, enjoying the crisp autumn air and the picturesque views of the town. I started with a tasting of local salumi and cheeses, savoring the rich flavors of the Umbrian countryside. Lena opted for a salad of farro with seasonal vegetables, appreciating the freshness and simplicity of the ingredients. Sophia, ever adventurous, tried the pizza with gourmet toppings. The staff were welcoming and efficient, adding to the overall pleasantness of the experience.

In the late afternoon, we took a break at Caffè Duomo ASSISI.

It was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a classic Italian coffee. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant atmosphere. I savored a rich espresso, while Lena chose a creamy cappuccino. Sophia, of course, couldn't resist a scoop of gelato. As we sat there, watching the world go by, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the simple pleasures of travel.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante Buca di San Francesco for dinner.

This restaurant, located in the heart of Assisi, was known for its traditional Umbrian dishes and its cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was built in the basement of an ancient building, dating back to 1300, with a floor made of stone from the Roman era. We started with the restaurant's signature Buca spaghetti. For the main course, I chose the roast chicken, while Lena decided on the lamb. Sophia enjoyed a simple pasta dish, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home.

The day’s explorations brought a deeper connection to Assisi. Discovering San Pietro and Sala Delle Volte allowed us to explore the town's spiritual and historical layers. Each meal was a celebration of Umbrian flavors. Sophia was fully engaged, absorbing the stories and sights with childlike wonder. Lena and I appreciated the blend of culture and relaxation, cherishing the moments we shared as a family.

Tomorrow, our last day in Assisi, we plan to visit ORTO DEGLI AGHI and Torre Annamaria. I am looking forward to a final exploration of Assisi's hidden corners before we bid farewell to this enchanting town. As I reflect on our time here, I am reminded that travel is not just about seeing famous sights, but about immersing oneself in the local culture and creating lasting memories with loved ones.

Back at Fontebella, I sat down to write, the day's experiences still fresh in my mind.

Sophia was already asleep, dreaming of ancient Romans and hidden treasures. Lena was reading a book, the soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminating her face. As I finished my writing, I felt a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. Assisi had given us so much, and I knew that we would carry its spirit with us long after we had left. I am so glad that we decided to take this trip as a family. It has been a wonderful experience, and I am excited to see what adventures await us in the future.
