A Day of Quiet Reflection

After the whirlwind of iconic sights, today was about seeking a different kind of Florence, a Florence found in quieter corners and contemplative spaces. It was a day to absorb the city's artistic soul at a more leisurely pace, to wander and discover beauty away from the bustling crowds. Lena and Sophia joined me, eager to explore the lesser-known treasures of this Renaissance city.

Our first destination was the Basilica di Santo Spirito in the Oltrarno district. From the outside, its plain facade is quite unassuming, but stepping inside was like entering a different world. The interior, designed by Brunelleschi, is a masterclass in Renaissance architecture, with its harmonious proportions and graceful columns. I was immediately struck by the sense of calm and serenity that permeated the space. It's incredible to think that Brunelleschi designed this in the 1430s. Sophia was surprisingly captivated by the architecture, pointing out the 'pretty circles' (the arches) and the 'tall, tall pillars'.

We wandered through the basilica, admiring the 38 side chapels, each adorned with its own unique artwork. I was particularly drawn to Michelangelo's wooden crucifix, a work he created as a young man while staying at the Santo Spirito convent. Knowing he studied anatomy by dissecting corpses from the convent hospital to perfect his art adds a layer of intrigue to the already stunning piece. Lena, ever the architect, was fascinated by the way Brunelleschi had originally intended the exterior to mirror the interior's semi-circular chapels, a vision that was unfortunately altered after his death. The Basilica offers a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual heart of Florence, away from the well-trodden tourist paths. It's a place where one can truly appreciate the beauty and ingenuity of Renaissance art and architecture.

The beauty of Florence lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the quiet corners where art and history intertwine.

Next, we stepped out into Piazza Santo Spirito, which was bursting with local life. Even in January, the piazza was vibrant, with locals chatting, children playing, and the aroma of Tuscan cuisine wafting from nearby restaurants. It felt like a true community hub. I imagined what it would be like to be here in April, when Liberation Day is celebrated, with the Piazza serving as one of the spots where people pay tribute to those who fought against fascism. Sophia, of course, was immediately drawn to a group of children playing football and wanted to join in. Lena and I watched, amused, as she fearlessly chased after the ball, her bright pink winter coat a blur of energy amidst the Florentine scene.

We stopped for lunch at Logò Ristorante, a cozy place I had read great reviews about. The interior was indeed beautiful and the atmosphere cozy. The food was delicious. Sophia enjoyed her pasta. Lena and I shared a bottle of local wine, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to recharge before our next artistic adventure.

After lunch, we headed to the Museo di San Marco. Housed in a former monastery, this museum is home to the world's most extensive collection of works by Fra Angelico. As we walked through the serene cloisters, it was easy to imagine the life of the Dominican friars who once lived here. The museum itself, designed by Michelozzo, is a masterpiece of 15th-century architecture.

The highlight, of course, was Fra Angelico's frescoes. Painted directly onto the walls of the friars' cells, these works are imbued with a profound sense of spirituality and grace. The Annunciation, in particular, is breathtaking. The delicate colors, the serene expressions of the figures, and the overall sense of peace are truly captivating. Sophia, who has been learning about angels in her kindergarten in Berlin, was fascinated by the frescoes. She peppered me with questions about the angels' wings and their roles in the paintings. It was a wonderful opportunity to share my love of art and history with her.

I found myself particularly moved by Fra Angelico's Crucifixion in the Chapter House. Its complex and allegorical nature invites deep contemplation. Knowing that Cosimo il Vecchio de' Medici, a major patron of the arts, had his own cell here where he would pray and meditate added another layer of historical significance to the experience.

Before leaving San Marco, we explored the library, built by Michelozzo for Cosimo de Medici. It was fascinating to imagine the great minds who once studied within those walls. The museum truly maintains its atmosphere intact. It is easy to imagine Friar Gerolamo Savonarola, who made the convent his headquarters. The Museo di San Marco is a testament to the power of art and faith, a place where the spiritual and the aesthetic intertwine.

Our final stop of the day was L'Arte de' Ciompi Firenze, a small shop I stumbled upon while wandering near Piazza San Marco. It was filled with handmade leather goods, wooden toys, and paper crafts. I picked up a small leather-bound journal for myself and a wooden puzzle for Sophia. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and this shop was a perfect example of the craftsmanship and creativity that Florence has to offer.

For dinner, we decided to try Il Latini, a family restaurant known for its authentic Florentine cuisine. It was raining on the way there. The restaurant was packed, but the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. We were seated at a communal table with a group of locals, which added to the convivial atmosphere. The food was hearty and delicious, a true taste of Tuscany. Sophia enjoyed her pasta, while Lena and I shared a Bistecca alla Fiorentina, cooked to perfection. The waiters recommended that you simply sit back and enjoy the ride “famiglia” style which means everything gets chucked in the middle for sharing – best sort of eating as far as I'm concerned because you get to try everything. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Florence's hidden gems.

As I reflect on the day, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences Florence offers. From the grandeur of the Basilica di Santo Spirito to the intimate spirituality of the Museo di San Marco, from the vibrant energy of Piazza Santo Spirito to the cozy atmosphere of L'Arte de' Ciompi Firenze, Florence is a city that rewards those who take the time to wander and explore.

Tomorrow, we're heading to the Piazza del Duomo, the Cappelle Medicee, and the Strozzi Palace. I’m excited to see the iconic Duomo and delve deeper into the history of the Medici family. After that, perhaps we'll treat ourselves to a drink at Atrium Bar. Good night from Florence!
