Reaching New Heights in Colca Canyon
Today was all about embracing the grandeur of Colca Canyon. I was eager to explore more of the geological and historical tapestry that this region offers. With Olivia and Ethan by my side, I knew it would be a day filled with shared wonder and discovery. The crisp mountain air and the promise of breathtaking vistas spurred us onward, ready to immerse ourselves in the heart of the Andes.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Balcón de Don Zacarías in Chivay. It was a charming spot, and the traditional Peruvian breakfast was just what we needed to fuel up for the day’s adventures. I opted for some local bread with avocado, while Olivia enjoyed a quinoa porridge. Ethan, of course, went straight for the pancakes. I have to say, starting the day with that breakfast was a treat, the local ingredients really shining through. It’s always a pleasure to experience the local cuisine, and this place didn't disappoint. It gave us a real taste of Chivay. The restaurant had a lovely view of the Plaza de Armas, which added to the experience.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore Volcan Keyocc. The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape unfolding before us in layers of vibrant colours and dramatic formations. As we approached the volcano, the sheer scale of it was humbling. We didn't hike to the very top, as we wanted to conserve energy for the rest of the day, but even from the base, the views were incredible. Ethan was particularly fascinated by the volcanic rock, pocketing a few smaller pieces as souvenirs – much to Olivia’s amusement. It was a great opportunity to talk about the geological forces that shaped the canyon and the surrounding landscape. The air was thin, but the views were thick with beauty.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our itinerary was the Puente Inca, an ancient stone bridge that gracefully spans the Colca River. This remarkable structure offered not only breathtaking views of the river and canyon but also served as a historical testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. It was amazing to think about the history beneath our feet, imagining the Incas traversing this very bridge centuries ago. The bridge is made of stone with two lanes for cars. Ethan was fascinated by how the Incas managed to build such a sturdy structure without modern tools, and I found myself pondering the ingenuity and resourcefulness of this ancient civilization. Olivia, ever the historian, shared some interesting facts about the bridge's construction and its significance in Inca society. The surrounding landscape was equally captivating, with hiking trails leading to breathtaking viewpoints along the canyon's edge. We took a short walk along one of these trails, soaking in the panoramic views and capturing some memorable photos.

After a morning of exploration, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Restaurant Turístico Colca, where we enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties. I opted for the trout, while Olivia chose the Arroz con Pollo. Ethan, predictably, went for the chicken. The food was flavourful and satisfying, and the service was excellent. The restaurant was bustling with tourists, but the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was a great place to recharge before continuing our adventure.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of local culture. We made our way to Bar HAKUNA MATATA, a lively spot known for its local brews and friendly atmosphere. While I sampled some of the local beers, Ethan enjoyed a refreshing Inca Kola, and Olivia sipped on a coca tea. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. It was a great opportunity to relax, chat with fellow travelers, and soak in the local vibe. Ethan even struck up a conversation with a local musician, who shared some interesting stories about the region's musical traditions.

For dinner, we decided to try Colca Buffet Restaurant, enticed by the promise of a wide variety of local dishes. The buffet was indeed impressive, with a vast array of Peruvian specialties to choose from. I sampled everything from the causa to the rocoto relleno, while Olivia enjoyed the quinoa soup and the various salads. Ethan, of course, made a beeline for the dessert section, loading up on cakes and pastries. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was festive and lively. It was a great way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible experiences we had shared. From the awe-inspiring vistas of Volcan Keyocc to the ancient history of Puente Inca, every moment had been filled with wonder and discovery. I am really happy that we got to see so much today and share those experiences as a family. I think that travelling to places like this gives you a new perspective on life and our place within it. It is something that I think Ethan will remember for a long time. As a family, we will remember this trip forever.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore Catarata panahua and Catarata Sankillay, two more of Colca Canyon’s hidden gems. Plus, Olivia’s keen on visiting Pintado cool, apparently a great spot for local crafts. I’m looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!
The warmth of the Peruvian people, the stunning landscapes, and the rich cultural heritage have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I feel grateful for the opportunity to share this adventure with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
