Tides and Tales

Today was all about embracing the raw, natural beauty of Mont Saint-Michel Bay. Leaving the comfort of our cozy Airbnb, we set out to explore the area's unique ecosystem and delve into its fascinating history. Sophia was practically bouncing with excitement, eager to see everything the bay had to offer. Lena, ever the architect, was keen to observe how the landscape has shaped the local architecture and culture. I was just happy to be spending quality time with my family, camera in hand, ready to capture every moment.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Sirène Lochet. We indulged in some delicious Breton crêpes, both savory and sweet. Sophia opted for a classic Nutella crêpe, while Lena enjoyed a galette filled with local cheese and ham. I went for a crêpe with salted caramel – when in France, right? The cozy atmosphere of the crêperie was the perfect start to our day, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.

After breakfast, we decided to explore the Baie du Mont St. Michel. The sheer scale of the bay is impressive, especially considering it's home to some of the highest tides in Europe. The landscape is constantly changing, revealing vast stretches of sand and then quickly submerging again as the tide rushes in. It's a dynamic environment that has shaped the lives of the people who live here for centuries. I made sure to keep a close eye on Sophia, reminding her to stay close as we ventured further onto the sands.

The Bay of Mont Saint-Michel is a place where nature and history intertwine, creating a landscape that is both beautiful and awe-inspiring.

We spent a good portion of the morning simply wandering along the bay, taking in the sights and sounds. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the cries of seagulls and the gentle lapping of the waves. Sophia was fascinated by the tiny crabs scuttling across the sand, and Lena was busy sketching the distant outline of Mont Saint-Michel. I tried my hand at capturing the vastness of the landscape with my camera, but no photograph can truly do it justice. You really have to be there to feel the immensity of it all.

Next up on our itinerary was the Écomusée de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. This museum, located in Vains, is dedicated to the history and ecology of the bay. It's housed in a former farmhouse, which adds to its charm. The museum does an excellent job of explaining how the bay was formed, the unique ecosystem it supports, and the ways in which humans have interacted with the bay over the centuries. Sophia was particularly interested in the exhibits about the local wildlife, especially the birds and seals that call the bay home.

The Écomusée de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel offered a fascinating glimpse into the bay's ecosystem and human history. We learned about the traditional methods of salt production, the evolution of the landscape, and the impact of human activities on the environment. Lena appreciated the architectural details of the old farmhouse, noting how it blended seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Sophia enjoyed the interactive exhibits, especially the ones about local wildlife.

One of the highlights of the museum was the exhibit on traditional salt production. We learned that salt was once a major industry in the bay, with locals using a unique method to extract salt from the seawater. The museum even had a demonstration of the process, which was fascinating to watch. It's amazing to think about how much effort went into producing something that we now take for granted.

After immersing ourselves in the museum, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Restaurant La Confiance, a charming eatery located in the heart of Mont Saint-Michel. The restaurant is housed in a historic 15th-century building, which added to its appeal. We were seated near a large fireplace, which created a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu featured traditional Norman cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients.

I decided to try the agneau de pré-salé, a local specialty of salt marsh lamb. The lamb is raised on the salt marshes of the bay, which gives it a unique flavor. It was absolutely delicious, tender and flavorful, with a hint of saltiness. Lena opted for the marmite de poisson, a hearty fish stew filled with a variety of seafood. She said it was one of the best fish stews she had ever tasted. Sophia, being a bit of a picky eater, went for the volaille rôtie, a simple roasted chicken dish. She cleaned her plate, so I think it's safe to say she enjoyed it.

As we savored our meals, we discussed the day's adventures and marveled at the beauty of Mont Saint-Michel. Lena pointed out the architectural details of the restaurant, noting the exposed beams and stone walls. Sophia was busy drawing pictures of the crabs we had seen on the beach. It was a perfect family moment, one that I will cherish for years to come.

After lunch, we decided to take a stroll through the village of Mont Saint-Michel. The village is located on the slopes of the island, leading up to the abbey at the top. It's a maze of narrow, winding streets filled with shops, restaurants, and hotels. The village was bustling with tourists, but it still managed to retain its charm. We stopped at a few shops to browse the local crafts and souvenirs. Sophia picked out a small stuffed sheep to remind her of the agneau de pré-salé we had for lunch.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at BAR LOUNGE LA ROSERAIE - BEAUVOIR - MONT SAINT-MICHEL. The bar is located in Beauvoir, a small town just a short drive from Mont Saint-Michel. It's part of the Hotel Ermitage Mont Saint Michel, a charming hotel with a beautiful garden. The bar had a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, with comfortable seating and a wide selection of drinks. I ordered a local cider, while Lena opted for a glass of wine. Sophia, of course, went for a glass of juice. We sat in the garden, enjoying the sunshine and the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of exploring.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Le Pré Salé, known for its regional specialties. This turned out to be an excellent choice. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a delightful array of dishes showcasing the best of Norman and Breton cuisine. I opted for the agneau de pré-salé again, eager to experience it in a different preparation. Lena chose a fish dish, and Sophia happily devoured a simple but delicious meal from the children's menu. The service was impeccable, and the meal was a perfect end to a fulfilling day.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our Airbnb, tired but happy. We reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared throughout the day. From exploring the vastness of the bay to delving into its history at the Écomusée, every moment was filled with wonder and delight. Sophia was already fast asleep in the back seat, dreaming of crabs and sheep. Lena and I held hands, grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with our daughter.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Tour Gabriel and Roche Torin, hoping to discover more hidden gems of Mont Saint-Michel Bay. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Biscuiterie de la Baie du Mont St Michel. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery.

As I sit here writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to travel and experience new cultures. It's something that I never take for granted, especially now that I have a family to share it with. Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime. And today, we certainly created some unforgettable memories in Mont Saint-Michel Bay.
