Day 2: Ascending Vesuvius: A Day Amongst Volcanic Giants
Experience the breathtaking views from Mount Vesuvius and explore the stunning landscapes of Vesuvius National Park with Jan and Lena.
Reaching for the Summit
Today was all about heights, both literally and figuratively. Lena and I set out to conquer Mount Vesuvius, a giant that has shaped the history and landscape of this region. It was a day of breathtaking views, challenging climbs, and a deep connection to the forces of nature. I'm excited to share the journey with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Umami Bakery Bistrot. It's a charming spot, and after a quick search I discovered it to be well-regarded for its pastries and coffee. I opted for a cappuccino and a cornetto, while Lena enjoyed a slice of ricotta cake. Fuelled up and ready, we set off towards Vesuvius. The anticipation was palpable as the mountain loomed larger with each passing kilometer.

The drive to Vesuvius National Park was scenic, with glimpses of the Bay of Naples sparkling in the distance. I was glad I remembered to pack sunscreen, even though I forgot the travel adapter. Upon arrival, we parked the car and hopped on a shuttle bus that took us closer to the trail head. The shuttle saved us a significant amount of walking uphill, a wise decision considering the climb ahead. As we ascended, the views became increasingly panoramic. The slopes were adorned with vibrant greenery, a testament to the fertile volcanic soil. I made sure to take a moment to capture some photos, keen to share the beauty of this place with you all.

The mountain was calling, and I had to answer.
The hike to the crater was challenging, but rewarding. The path was steep and winding, and I found myself pausing frequently to catch my breath. Lena, ever the supportive partner, kept me motivated with encouraging words and shared water. Despite the effort, the views were simply stunning. We could see the entire Bay of Naples, with Capri and Sorrento visible in the distance. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight. It was at that moment I wished I hadn't forgotten my umbrella, as the sun was beating down on us mercilessly.
Reaching the crater's edge was an incredible experience. The sheer scale of the volcano was humbling. I peered into the depths, imagining the immense power that lay dormant beneath. Steam rose from vents in the crater floor, a reminder of Vesuvius's active nature. It was a stark and surreal landscape, a world away from the bustling city below.
After spending some time at the summit, soaking in the views and taking photos, we began our descent. The downhill hike was much easier, and we made good time. Back at the base, we decided to stop at Terrazza Vesuvius for a well-deserved drink. The bar offered stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere. I enjoyed a refreshing Aperol spritz while Lena opted for a glass of local wine. It was the perfect way to unwind after our climb.

For lunch, we stopped at La Fornacella. The reviews I had read suggested it was an excellent choice, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. We shared a pizza and a pasta dish, both of which were delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to refuel after our day of hiking. It was great to share this moment with Lena, after all these years.

As evening approached, we headed to La Terra d'Ercole for dinner. The restaurant was conveniently located and offered a menu of traditional Neapolitan dishes. I opted for a seafood pasta, while Lena chose a classic Margherita pizza. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and adventure.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the past with a visit to Villa dei Papiri and Villa Maiuri, where we hope to uncover more secrets of ancient Herculaneum. I’m also planning to take Lena to Pezzamificio Herculanum Di Liberato Langella & C. (S.A.S.) to get some local textiles, as she is really into fashion and design. It's amazing to think that tomorrow is already Day 3 of our trip, time really does fly when you are having fun!
Today was a reminder of the power and beauty of nature. Vesuvius is more than just a mountain; it's a symbol of the region's history, culture, and resilience. Climbing it was an unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. As I reflect on the day, I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible place with Lena by my side.
I am also grateful that I get to share these experiences with you, hoping that I can inspire you to come visit Italy and see for yourself what a beautiful and historically charged place this is.
Until tomorrow!
