High Points and Holy Places

Today, Lena and I ventured beyond the familiar streets of Évora, seeking out the storied heights and spiritual havens that dot the Alentejo landscape. It was a day of castles perched on hilltops, chapels whispering tales of centuries past, and vistas that stretched to the horizon. A day that reminded me why we travel – to touch history, to feel the pulse of a place, and to share those moments together.

Our first stop was Restaurante A Casa for breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for a classic *torrada* with butter, while Lena chose a pastry filled with local cheese. It's the simple things that often taste the best, especially when enjoyed in good company. The restaurant was cozy, filled with locals starting their day, and it gave us a real sense of being part of the community, even if just for a short while.

Fueled up, we set off towards Evoramonte, a name that resonated with historical significance. As we drove, the landscape transformed, the plains of Alentejo unfolding before us like a vast, golden tapestry. I couldn't help but think of my own roots, growing up in the rolling hills of Czechia, and how similar yet different this landscape felt. It's funny how places can evoke a sense of familiarity while still being entirely new.

The Castle of Evoramonte stood proudly atop the Serra d'Ossa, a sentinel overlooking the ages. The climb was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic views were more than worth the effort. From up there, we could see the Alentejo stretching out in every direction, a sea of green and gold under the vast Portuguese sky. The castle itself was a fascinating mix of Gothic and Manueline styles, a testament to the many layers of history it had witnessed. I imagined knights defending its walls, kings making treaties, and the everyday lives of the people who once called this place home. Lena, ever the artist, was captivated by the play of light on the stone walls, snapping photos from every angle.

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

Evoramonte is steeped in history; it was conquered from the Moors in 1160 by Geraldo Sem Pavor. King Dinis ordered the fortification of the town in 1306, and the Concession of Evoramonte was signed here in 1834, ending the Liberal Wars. Walking through the village, we felt the weight of centuries, the echoes of battles and treaties, the quiet resilience of the people who have lived here through it all. We explored the four original doors in the wall around Evoramonte. The clean, unadorned style reminded us of its main function, the defense of the village. We also saw the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (church) near the cemetery.

After soaking in the history of Evoramonte, we drove to Aromas do Campo for lunch. This restaurant promised a taste of the Alentejo countryside, and it didn't disappoint. We shared a platter of local cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by crusty bread and a bottle of regional wine. The flavors were rich and earthy, a perfect reflection of the landscape around us. Lena enjoyed the *migas*, a traditional bread-based dish, while I savored the grilled lamb. It was the kind of meal that lingers in your memory long after you've finished eating, a true taste of Portugal.

With our appetites sated, we continued our journey to Monsaraz, another hilltop village with a commanding view. This one felt even more ancient, its narrow, winding streets whispering tales of Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. The Monsaraz Castle, built in the 14th century by King Dinis, offered stunning views of the Alqueva Dam, the largest artificial lake in Europe. We walked along the walls, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago, defending this strategic outpost against invaders. The village itself was a charming maze of white-washed houses and artisan shops, each corner revealing a new vista or a hidden gem.

Monsaraz has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The Romans fortified the town, and it was later taken from the Muslims in 1167 by Geraldo Sem Pavor. The village retains its medieval appearance, with shale walls and lime coatings. We walked through the Porta d'Évora (Evora Door) on the north side of the wall and admired the views over the Alentejo fields. We also saw the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa (church), built in the 16th century on the ruins of a gothic church.

Our final stop of the day was the Chapel of Saint Blaise back in Évora. This small chapel, located just outside the city walls, was built in the late 15th century in thanksgiving for the end of a plague epidemic. Its unique architecture, a blend of Gothic and Moorish styles, gave it a fortress-like appearance. Inside, we admired the intricate *azulejos* and the serene atmosphere. It was a peaceful end to a day filled with exploration, a moment to reflect on the history and beauty we had encountered.

The Chapel of Saint Blaise was sponsored by King João II and features large battlements and round buttresses. The interior has Moorish-style tiles from the 16th century and gilded chapels added in the 18th century. The chancel has a gilded altarpiece with a wooden image of St. Blaise.

For dinner, we chose Bistro Barão, a cozy spot recommended by several locals. The bistro is run by a charming older couple and has a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The owner, Miguel, is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and wine selection. I savored the perfectly cooked shrimp, while Lena thoroughly enjoyed the partridge pie. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration, a chance to relax and savor the flavors of the Alentejo.

Finally, as the sun began to set, we headed to A Ver Évora - Rooftop Bar for a nightcap. From up there, we had a panoramic view of the city, the ancient monuments bathed in the warm glow of twilight. We sipped local wine, reminiscing about the day's adventures, the castles, the chapels, and the breathtaking views. It was a perfect moment, a reminder of why we love to travel, to explore, and to share these experiences together.

Tomorrow, we are off to Vila Viçosa. We plan to explore the Castle of Vila Viçosa and the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa [text]. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Ervideira Wine Shop [text].

Today was a reminder of the importance of venturing beyond the well-trodden path, of seeking out the hidden gems and the quiet corners where history whispers its secrets. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with Lena, my partner in life and adventure. It's the shared experiences, the laughter, and the quiet moments of connection that make these journeys so special. And I wouldn't trade them for anything.
