Explore Lleida's fascinating water history with visits to the Museu de l'Aigua and Dipòsit del Pla de l'Aigua, plus local culinary delights!
A Day of Liquid History
Today was all about diving deep, quite literally, into the history of Lleida. I never expected that a city's water system could be so captivating, but today's itinerary proved me wrong. Lena would have loved this, she always appreciates when I bring her to explore unique historical locations. From ancient water storage to modern culinary delights, today was a perfect blend of education and indulgence.
Our day began, as many good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to Restaurant Aimia, a local favorite known for its Mediterranean cuisine. I opted for a traditional Catalan breakfast, while my friends tried some of the more modern options. The Michelin Guide recommends this restaurant for tasty meals at moderate prices. The octopus was perfectly cooked, and the cuttlefish was delicious. Aimia, which means beloved woman in old Catalan, boasts a contemporary interior and a kitchen visible from the dining room. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

With our stomachs full, we set off to explore the Museu de l'Aigua. This Water Museum isn't just one place, but a network of historical sites around Lleida, each telling a different part of the city’s water story. Our first stop was the Campament de la Canadenca, the former homes of the workers from the company La Canadiense. It was fascinating to learn about the hydroelectric power that shaped the region, thanks to the work of Dr. Pearson.

Water is the driving force of all nature.
Next, we ventured to the Dipòsit del Pla de l'Aigua, the city's first potable water reservoir, built in the late 18th century. This underground reservoir was constructed in 1784 to supply the city with drinking water and combat epidemics. Walking through this space, supported by 25 stone pillars and covered by six barrel vaults, was like stepping back in time. The sheer scale of the reservoir, capable of holding 9 million liters, is impressive. The Pla de l'Aigua Reservoir is the first potable water reservoir in the city of Lleida. The reservoir was filled with water from the Pinyana canal and distributed to the population through five monumental fountains.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Lleida's water supply, it was time for lunch. We chose La Forastera restaurant, known for its Mediterranean and Spanish cuisines. I decided to try the monkfish, while my friends opted for the octopus and beef dishes. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was sophisticated. We enjoyed the creative menu and authentic flavors in each dish.

As the day wound down, I couldn't help but reflect on the surprising depth of Lleida's history. It's easy to overlook the importance of something as basic as water, but today showed me just how much it can shape a city's identity. It reminded me a little of the water systems back in Havlíčkův Brod, though on a much grander scale.
