Exploring Lleida: A Cultural Journey with Friends
Day 1: Lleida's Ancient Echoes: A Day of Cathedrals and Castles
Exploring Lleida's historical heart, from the majestic La Seu Vella to the imposing Castell de la Suda. A journey through time!
Echoes of the Past in Lleida
Today marked the beginning of our Spanish adventure in Lleida, and what a start it has been! The city is steeped in history, and I was eager to dive right in. Lena and I, along with our friends, set out to explore the iconic landmarks that define Lleida's cultural landscape. It’s amazing how much history is concentrated in one place, and I couldn't wait to share it all with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant L'Espurna Lleida. The aromas of Mediterranean cuisine filled the air, promising a delightful start. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for a traditional Catalan breakfast, which included pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) and some local cheese. It was simple, yet satisfying, and gave me a taste of what Lleida had to offer.

Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was La Seu Vella, the old cathedral that dominates the city's skyline. As we approached, the sheer scale of the building was breathtaking. Perched atop a hill, it offered panoramic views of Lleida and the surrounding countryside. The August sun was already beating down, but a gentle breeze made the climb pleasant enough.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.La Seu Vella is a fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, reflecting its construction over several centuries. Construction of the cathedral began in 1203, on the site of a former mosque, and continued well into the 15th century. The intricate sculptures and soaring bell tower spoke volumes about the artistic and cultural shifts that had shaped the region. Lena, ever the art enthusiast, was particularly captivated by the details of the facade, while I found myself drawn to the historical significance of the site.

We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the cathedral's naves and cloisters. The audio guide provided insightful commentary, detailing the cathedral's role in various historical events. It was once a military fortress, and its walls bear the scars of past conflicts. The climb to the top of the bell tower was well worth the effort, offering stunning views of Lleida. From up there, you could see the Segre River winding its way through the landscape, and the city stretching out in all directions.
After immersing ourselves in the spiritual and architectural grandeur of La Seu Vella, we made our way to Castell de la Suda, also known as the King's Castle, which stands adjacent to the cathedral. This ancient fortress-palace has a history stretching back to the 9th century when it was established as a Moorish fortress. Over the centuries, it transformed into a royal palace and witnessed significant events such as the coronation of James I of Aragon in 1214.

Exploring the ruins of Castell de la Suda was like stepping back in time. The blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles was evident in the remaining structures, and the panoramic views from the castle walls were simply spectacular. The Lion's Gate, with its Roman wall dating back to before 26-16 BC, was a tangible link to the ancient past. It was easy to imagine the strategic importance of this fortress throughout history.
By this point, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed to El Celler del Roser for lunch. This restaurant is located in a beautifully restored 13th-century convent. The ambiance was charming, and the menu featured traditional Catalan cuisine. We shared a few dishes, including cannelloni and fideuà with squid – each bite was a burst of local flavor. Lena particularly enjoyed the fideuà, while I was partial to the cannelloni.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the city center, soaking in the atmosphere. The streets were bustling with locals and tourists alike, and the shops were filled with interesting souvenirs. I couldn't resist picking up a few postcards to send back home to my family in Czechia.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant BOnum No Rules for dinner. This place came highly recommended, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant offered a unique twist on Mediterranean cuisine, and the chef's suggestions were spot on. I opted for the snails with foie sauce, which was an unexpected but delightful combination. The chef was incredibly friendly and clearly passionate about his creations.

To cap off our first day, we decided to experience Lleida's nightlife with a visit to G-Bar Lleida Pub Lounge. The bar had a great atmosphere, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. I enjoyed a gin and tonic while Lena tried a mojito. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The music got louder as the night progressed, and the place was packed.

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on our first day in Lleida, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what’s to come. Lleida has already proven to be a city full of surprises, rich in history and culture. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Museu de Lleida, the MORERA Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Lleida, and the Centre d'Art la Panera. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the local art scene and learning more about the region's artistic heritage. I'm also hoping to find a quiet spot to read a bit of the travel guide I brought along. I realized I forgot my Spanish phrasebook and sunglasses, but I'm sure I can pick those up tomorrow. Until then, goodnight from Lleida!
It's funny how travel always brings unexpected moments. As we were leaving G-Bar, we ran into a group of fellow travelers from Germany. We ended up chatting for a while, sharing travel stories and tips. It's these chance encounters that often make travel so rewarding. They recommended a small, family-run restaurant just outside the city center, known for its authentic paella. I think we might have to check that out later in the trip!
The weather in Lleida in August is quite warm, with average temperatures around 27°C (81°F). Highs can soar to 41°C (106°F), so it's important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. The humidity is around 64%, and there's a good chance of sunny days. The UV index is also high, so it's best to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially between 2 PM and 4 PM. Despite the heat, the city is quite pleasant, and the evenings are especially enjoyable.
Before I turn in, I wanted to share a funny moment from today. As we were exploring La Seu Vella, I tried to take a panoramic photo of the city from the bell tower. However, I accidentally switched to video mode and ended up recording a rather shaky and blurry clip of the view. Lena couldn't stop laughing, and now we have a hilarious memento of our first day in Lleida.
As a software developer, I always appreciate the blend of old and new, and Lleida certainly offers that. The ancient architecture juxtaposed with modern amenities and vibrant city life is a testament to the city's ability to adapt and thrive. I'm looking forward to seeing what other hidden gems we'll discover in the coming days. This trip with Lena and our friends is already shaping up to be an unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you!
I'm also mindful of traveling sustainably, and I'm trying to make eco-conscious choices during our trip. We've been using our reusable water bottles, walking or cycling whenever possible, and supporting local businesses. It's important to me that our travels have a positive impact on the communities we visit. I'm hoping to learn more about sustainable tourism initiatives in Lleida and share those insights with you as well.
So, that's a wrap for day one in Lleida. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our cultural journey through this charming Spanish city. Until next time!
