A Breath of Fresh Air in Lleida
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and culinary treasures of Lleida. Leaving the tech world behind in Berlin, I find these moments of connection with nature and local culture incredibly grounding. Lena would have loved this day as well, she always enjoys a good walk in nature. Today's itinerary was packed with visits to stunning parks and delightful restaurants, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and gastronomic adventure.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Alveo. I opted for their highly recommended *menu del dia*, a delightful selection that showcased the chef's creativity. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, and the service was exceptionally warm and welcoming. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring Lleida's green spaces. My friends and I enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere while savoring every bite.

From there, we ventured to Parc de la Mitjana, a vast and stunning park located on the outskirts of the city. As we entered, it felt like stepping into a natural reserve, with the river flowing gently through the landscape. The park's lush greenery and serene waterways provided a peaceful retreat from the urban hustle. We strolled along the winding paths, admiring the centuries-old trees and vibrant wildflowers. The air was fresh, and the sounds of nature filled our ears, creating a truly immersive experience.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
The park is more than just a pretty place; it also serves as an educational experience. Informative signs dotted the trails, offering insights into the local ecosystem, flora, and fauna. Although I missed my Spanish phrasebook (one of the items I forgot to pack!), I managed to glean some interesting facts about the park's biodiversity. It’s amazing how much you can learn just by observing and being present in the environment. The park is well-maintained paths that cater to walkers, joggers, and cyclists, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the scenery at their own pace. We even spotted a few birdwatchers, keenly observing the various bird species that call the park home.
After spending a refreshing morning at Parc de la Mitjana, we made our way to Arborètum Dr. Pius Font i Quer, a botanical garden and arboretum named after the renowned botanist from Lleida. This place is a true gem, combining research activities with public enjoyment as a green space in the city. The Arborètum features a diverse collection of living plants, with over half a thousand species of trees and shrubs arranged according to their respective biomes.

As we wandered through the garden, we were transported to different parts of the world, exploring various forest environments such as boreal forests, deciduous forests, sclerophyllous forests, and temperate rainforests. Each biome was meticulously recreated, showcasing the unique characteristics of these ecosystems. I particularly enjoyed the sensory experience of the arboretum – the earthy smells, the varied textures of the leaves, and the play of light through the canopy. It was a feast for the senses and a reminder of the incredible diversity of our planet. I made a mental note to bring Lena here next time; she would absolutely love the tranquility and beauty of this place.
By lunchtime, we were ready to indulge in some more of Lleida's culinary offerings. We chose La Huerta, a restaurant known for its traditional Catalan dishes and grilled meats. The restaurant's charming decor and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home. We started with some outstanding appetizers, including the eggplant, which was a personal favorite. For the main course, I opted for the salmon, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. My friends tried the snails, a local specialty, and raved about their unique taste. The service was excellent, with the staff being attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. It was a truly satisfying dining experience that left us feeling content and energized.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Lleida's nightlife at Blackberry Cocktail Bar. This bar is known for its professionally crafted cocktails and lively ambiance. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, creating innovative and delicious drinks inspired by classic recipes. I tried their signature Porn Star Martini, a delightful concoction that was both refreshing and flavorful. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, and the music added to the overall vibe. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Blackberry Cocktail Bar was recently recognized as one of the best cocktail bars in Spain and Portugal. Blackberry's cocktail list is inspired by the Greek term 'Neo', where classic cocktails are adapted to modern times with new techniques.

Before heading back to the hotel, we had dinner at Restaurant Palermo, a place with a long history in Lleida. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel like part of their family. I ordered the cod, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned, while my friends opted for the antipasto and laing. For dessert, we shared the mermelada and baked custard, both of which were heavenly. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with nature, culture, and culinary delights. Palermo offers Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine. The restaurant also offers take-away.

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Lleida. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the New Cathedral of Lleida and the Church of Sant Llorenç, delving deeper into the city's rich history and architecture. I’m particularly looking forward to visiting the New Cathedral, as I’ve read about its stunning Gothic architecture. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure. I'm also planning to visit Flying Tiger Copenhagen tomorrow.
It's interesting to see that there are several concerts and festivals happening in and around Lleida in the coming months. Perhaps Lena and I can return later in the year to enjoy some of the local music scene. For now, I'm content with the memories of today and the anticipation of what tomorrow will bring.
The day reminded me of a quote I once read: The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask. And Lleida is certainly answering questions I never knew I had. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.
Also, I should probably buy new sunglasses tomorrow, since I forgot them at home. Maybe I'll find some at Flying Tiger Copenhagen!
