Day 3: Peaks, Ponds, and Pilsners

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Futaleufu and unwinding with the locals. Lena and I set out early, eager to explore more of this Patagonian paradise. We've been trying to balance adventure with relaxation, and today felt like the perfect blend.

Our first stop was Laguna de la Paz. The crisp morning air invigorated us as we approached the lagoon. The name, Laguna de la Paz, translates to Lagoon of Peace, and it certainly lived up to its name. The water was so still, it mirrored the surrounding mountains with perfect clarity. It was a truly serene sight. I couldn't resist taking a few photos, trying to capture the tranquility of the moment. We saw a few locals preparing for a morning kayak, and I made a mental note to try that out sometime during our stay. Apparently, the lagoon's calmer waters make it a great spot for beginners.

From there, we headed to Mirador Pozón de los Reyes. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the Futaleufu River. As we ascended to the viewpoint, the landscape opened up before us. The panoramic view was breathtaking – a sweeping vista of lush greenery, rugged mountains, and the shimmering river below. Lena was particularly taken by the vibrant colors, remarking how the Patagonian landscape seemed to be painted with bolder strokes than anything we'd seen before. It was easy to see why this spot is a favorite for photographers; every angle offered a postcard-worthy shot.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead you to a place where nature's beauty simply overwhelms you.

After soaking in the views, our stomachs started to rumble. We made our way to Once once Restaurant for breakfast. It was a cozy little spot, and the reviews I'd read online were spot on. The food was hearty and delicious, the perfect fuel for our morning adventures. Lena opted for a traditional Chilean breakfast, while I went with something a bit more familiar. It’s always interesting to see how different cultures approach the first meal of the day.

For lunch, we decided to try SurAndes Futaleufú. The menu was diverse, with a focus on local ingredients. I decided to try one of their sandwiches. Lena went for a salad. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was friendly. It was a great place to recharge before our evening plans.

As evening approached, we had dinner at Karü Susheria Futaleufú. I know, sushi in Patagonia might seem a bit out of place, but we had heard great things about it. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the sushi was surprisingly fresh and delicious. The chef clearly took pride in his craft, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a delightful culinary experience, and a testament to the unexpected delights you can find while traveling.

Finally, to cap off the day, we ventured out to Pub Scorpions. I was curious to see what the nightlife in Futaleufu was like, and this place seemed to be a local favorite. It was a lively spot, with a rustic decor that reflected the local culture. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and we quickly struck up conversations with some of the locals and fellow travelers. I sampled a local brew, while Lena opted for a cocktail. The bartender was friendly and gave us some recommendations for other places to check out in the area. We even met a couple who had just finished a white-water rafting trip and were still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was inspiring to hear their stories and get a sense of the adventurous spirit that permeates this region.

I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant about visiting a bar. Back in Berlin, I usually spend my evenings working or reading. But I am glad I pushed myself. It was a great way to unwind and connect with people. I even managed to practice my Spanish, which was a definite plus.

As we walked back to our lodging, the stars were out in full force. The night sky in Patagonia is something truly special – so clear and vast, it feels like you can reach out and touch the constellations. Lena and I walked in comfortable silence, both of us reflecting on the day's adventures.

Futaleufu continues to surprise me. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in nature, challenge yourself with outdoor activities, and connect with a vibrant local culture. And while I still miss the comforts of my routine back in Berlin, I am starting to appreciate the simple joys of life on the road.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Laguna del Azul and Mirador del diablo. I've heard they offer even more stunning views, and I am eager to see what else this region has in store for us. Plus, we're planning to grab breakfast at Pronto Express Futaleufu, lunch again at Once Once Restaurant and dinner at Restobar El Patagón. And Lena has her eye on Casa Pallú, a local shop she wants to check out. I have a feeling tomorrow will be another day filled with adventure and discovery. Who knows what stories we'll have to share then?
