Day 13: Nature's Embrace: Discovering the Soul of Futaleufu
Immerse yourself in Futaleufu's charm: Pumalín National Park, local flavors, and hidden gems. A day of pure Patagonian bliss.
A Day of Patagonian Wonders
Today, Lena and I embarked on a journey that felt like stepping into the heart of Patagonia itself. It was a day filled with natural beauty, local flavors, and the kind of simple joys that make traveling so rewarding. From exploring a national park to savoring authentic Chilean cuisine, every moment was a testament to the magic of Futaleufu.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Yunta. Fueling up with local specialties was the perfect way to prepare for our adventure to Pumalín National Park. The drive itself was a treat, with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Even though November is considered one of the best months to visit, the air was crisp, carrying a hint of rain. The park, a sprawling expanse of temperate rainforest, waterfalls, and snow-capped mountains, was truly breathtaking.

We decided to hike a portion of the Sendero Alerce, a trail known for its ancient Alerce trees. Walking among these giants, some of which are over 3,000 years old, was a humbling experience. The forest floor was a carpet of mosses and ferns, and the air was filled with the sounds of birds. I tried to capture the beauty with my camera, but some scenes are impossible to truly capture, you have to be there to feel it. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, spotted a tiny hummingbird feeding on a fuchsia. It’s moments like these that make traveling with her so special. She notices the small wonders I would likely miss.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like sharing a meal or witnessing nature's grandeur.
After our hike, we drove back towards Futaleufu, stopping briefly at Passarela Ramos. It offered a unique perspective of the town and the river, and I snapped a few photos.

By lunchtime, we were both ravenous. We headed to Rio Grande Restaurant, drawn in by the promise of authentic Chilean cuisine. The restaurant did not disappoint. I ordered the *pastrami de tapapecho*, while Lena opted for *guatitas a la jardinera*. Both dishes were rich in flavor and clearly made with love. We shared a bottle of local Chilean wine, savoring each bite and sip as we discussed our morning adventures.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we decided to explore the town a bit. Futaleufu is small, but it has a certain charm that's hard to resist. We stumbled upon Dulce Hechicera, a small shop selling local crafts and sweets. Lena, with her love for all things handmade, was immediately drawn in. We ended up buying a few small souvenirs, including a jar of locally made honey and a hand-knitted scarf. I am sure Lena will find a way to incorporate them into our Berlin apartment somehow. She has a knack for finding beauty in unexpected places and bringing it home with her.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Rosadita futaleufu for dinner. After a day of exploring, nothing sounded better than a comforting slice of pizza. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked dough filled the air. We ordered a pizza with local toppings, and it was the perfect way to end our day. While we ate, we chatted with the owner, who shared stories about life in Futaleufu. I love these kinds of interactions, where you get a glimpse into the lives of the people who call a place home.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Caminante Austral and the Top Gear Bridge Patagonia. I'm particularly excited about the bridge; I remember watching that episode of Top Gear years ago and being amazed by the Patagonian landscapes. We plan to have breakfast at Once Once Restaurant, lunch at Rincon de Mama, and dinner at Antigua Casona Hotel - Restaurante Italiano. And perhaps, if the mood strikes, we'll check out Pub Scorpions for a nightcap. All in all, it was a fantastic day, one that I know we'll both cherish for years to come. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply immerse yourself in the local culture and let the day unfold naturally. As I sit here writing, I feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. It’s days like these that make me appreciate the beauty of our world and the importance of connecting with different cultures. And I’m so glad to be sharing it all with Lena, my partner in adventure.
The funny thing is, I almost forgot to pack my travel pillow for this trip, a near disaster averted at the last minute! It just goes to show, even the most seasoned travelers can have their moments of forgetfulness. Good thing I didn't forget my camera; otherwise, how would I prove to my friends back in Berlin that places as beautiful as Futaleufu actually exist?
