Echoes of History and Feathers in the Wind

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the echoes of Iceland's past with the vibrant life of its present. Lena and I delved into the historical depths of the Westman Islands and marveled at the charming puffins that call this place home. It’s amazing how much history and natural beauty can be packed into a single day, leaving us both humbled and in awe.

Our morning began at næs, a cozy spot where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Fuelled up and ready to explore, we set off for Skansinn. The walk there was pleasant, the air crisp and clean, typical of these islands. As a software developer, I appreciate the precision and structure in things, but there’s something about the raw, untamed beauty of nature that always captivates me. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was already snapping photos of the quaint houses and the dramatic coastline as we made our way.

Skansinn: A Journey Through Time

Arriving at Skansinn, I immediately felt transported back in time. This historic site, with its origins dating back to 1586, has served many purposes over the centuries. Originally built to defend against English merchants, it later saw action during the Turkish Abduction in 1627 and even served as a British military base during World War II. It’s incredible to stand in a place that has witnessed so much history.

The area around Skansinn was significantly altered by the 1973 volcanic eruption on Heimaey, which added over two square kilometers of lava to the landscape. This event reshaped the terrain and created a unique juxtaposition of historical structures and volcanic rock. As we walked around, we could see how the lava flow had affected the area, a stark reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped these islands.

One of the highlights of Skansinn is the Stave Church, a gift from Norway commemorating Iceland’s conversion to Christianity in 1000 AD. This replica of the Haltdalen Stave Church in Trondheim is a beautiful example of traditional Norwegian architecture. Inside, the church is simple yet elegant, with intricate wood carvings and a peaceful atmosphere. Lena was particularly taken with the craftsmanship, admiring the details and the sense of history that permeated the space.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

We also visited Landlyst, the site of Iceland’s first maternity home, now a medical museum. It was fascinating to learn about the history of healthcare on the islands and the role that Landlyst played in providing essential services to the community. The museum offered a glimpse into the past, showcasing old medical equipment and telling the stories of the people who lived and worked there.

As we explored Skansinn, we came across a cannon dating back to 1586, a relic from the days when the fortress was used for military exercises. It was a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the islanders’ resilience and determination to defend their home. The views from Skansinn were breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the coastline and the surrounding islands. It was easy to see why this location was chosen as a strategic defensive point.

Lunch at Einsi Kaldi: A Taste of the Sea

After a morning of historical exploration, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Einsi Kaldi restaurant, known for its fresh seafood and traditional Icelandic dishes. I opted for the fish soup, a hearty and flavorful concoction that warmed me from the inside out. Lena chose the grilled cod, which she declared was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel before our next adventure.

Puffins of Westman Isles: A Wildlife Encounter

With our bellies full, we set off to see the puffins, one of the main reasons we came to the Westman Islands. These charming birds are a symbol of Iceland, and the Westman Islands are home to one of the largest puffin colonies in Europe. The best time to see them is during their breeding season, which runs from late April to early September. Luckily, we were here at the perfect time.

We headed to a known puffin viewing spot, where we found a small wooden hut with sliding windows. From here, we could observe the puffins without disturbing them. As we waited, we spotted several puffins flying in and out of their nests, their beaks filled with sand eels. It was mesmerizing to watch them, their clumsy flight belying their skill as divers and hunters.

Lena was thrilled, snapping photos and marveling at their antics. I, too, was captivated by these little birds. Their resilience and adaptability are truly remarkable. They spend most of their lives at sea, only coming to land to breed. They are monogamous, often returning to the same nesting site year after year. It’s a testament to the power of nature and the beauty of the natural world.

The Westman Islands are home to over 1.1 million puffin couples, making it one of the best places in the world to see these birds. The local community is deeply connected to the puffins, and there are many efforts to protect and conserve their habitat. During the puffling season, local children even participate in rescuing young puffins that get disoriented by the town lights, helping them to find their way back to the sea.

The Brothers Brewery: A Perfect End to the Day

As the day drew to a close, we decided to visit The Brothers Brewery for dinner and a drink. This local brewery is known for its handcrafted beers and delicious food. We sampled a few of their brews, each with its unique flavor and character. For dinner, I had a burger, while Lena opted for a salad. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals.

The Brothers Brewery is more than just a place to eat and drink; it’s a community hub, a place where people come together to share stories and enjoy each other’s company. As we sat there, sipping our beers and reflecting on the day, I felt a sense of connection to this place and its people. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the island, including the Heimaey Lighthouse and Elephant Rock. I’m particularly excited to see Elephant Rock, a natural rock formation that resembles an elephant drinking from the sea. Lena is looking forward to visiting Runes of Iceland, a shop that sells traditional Icelandic crafts and souvenirs.

As I write this, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences we’ve had today. The Westman Islands have exceeded our expectations, offering a blend of history, nature, and culture that is both enriching and inspiring. I’m looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery, eager to see what new adventures await us.

For anyone planning a trip to Iceland, I highly recommend including the Westman Islands on your itinerary. It’s a destination that will stay with you long after you’ve left, a place where you can connect with the past, appreciate the present, and marvel at the beauty of the natural world.

I am also grateful that Lena decided to join me on this trip. As much as I love coding and technology, having someone to share these experiences with makes them even more special. Her enthusiasm and eye for detail add a new dimension to our travels, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

So, until tomorrow, takk fyrir and good night from the Westman Islands!
