Exploring the Wild Beauty of the Westman Islands
Day 9: Discovering Hidden Gems: Belugas, Caves, and Local Flavors in the Westman Islands
Explore the Westman Islands! Discover beluga whales, hidden caves, local shops and savor Icelandic cuisine on a unique adventure.
A Day of Discovery and Delight
Today was another incredible day exploring the Westman Islands. From encountering majestic marine life to delving into the depths of a volcanic cave and savoring local flavors, every moment was filled with unique experiences. Lena and I are continually amazed by the hidden gems this archipelago has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ísey Skyr Bar. I’ve always appreciated the simple, healthy foods, a habit I picked up during my time in Berlin, where bio markets and sustainable eating are quite popular. Lena opted for a skyr parfait with berries, while I chose a savory skyr bowl topped with fresh vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures.

Meeting the Belugas
Our first stop was the Beluga Whale Sanctuary. It’s truly inspiring to see these magnificent creatures in an environment that mimics their natural habitat. The sanctuary, operated by the SEA LIFE Trust, is home to Little Grey and Little White, two beluga whales who were rescued from captivity in Shanghai. The sanctuary is located in Klettsvik Bay, which provides a natural sub-Arctic environment for the whales. The sanctuary is the first of its kind and one of the biggest developments in captive whale and dolphin care and protection in decades and the first of its kind to be created for cetaceans.
Experience the magic of beluga whales at the Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Vestmannaeyjabær, a unique destination for marine life lovers.
We took a short boat trip from the visitor center in the Vestmannaeyjar harbor to get a closer look at the whales. It was amazing to see them swimming freely in the open water. The guide shared the story of their rescue and the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate them. Knowing their background made the experience even more poignant. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the conservationists involved. I was reminded of a quote I once read about the importance of preserving wildlife:
In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.
After seeing the belugas, we visited the Puffin Rescue Centre, also located at the sanctuary. The Westman Islands are home to one of the largest puffin colonies in the world, and the center rescues and cares for injured or orphaned puffins. It was heartwarming to see these adorable birds up close and learn about the efforts to protect them. Lena, with her soft spot for animals, was particularly touched by the puffins’ stories.
Exploring Loftsalahellir Cave
Next on our itinerary was Loftsalahellir Cave. Getting there involved a scenic drive along Dyrhólavegur, which offered stunning views of the Icelandic terrain. The cave is nestled on the southwest side of Geitafell Mountain, and even the drive there was an experience in itself.
Explore the geological wonders of Loftsalahellir Cave, a breathtaking natural attraction showcasing Iceland's unique formations and stunning landscapes.
The cave is made of tuff rock, and it has a unique shape that frames the landscape outside. From inside, we had a panoramic view of Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara Black Beach. The cave itself was formed by volcanic activity, which added to its mystique. As we stepped inside, the cool air and echoes created a stark contrast to the vibrant landscapes outside.
The surrounding area was just as breathtaking, with sweeping views of the Icelandic terrain, offering numerous opportunities for photography and exploration. We took our time to appreciate the subtle nuances of the cave's formation and the surrounding flora. I could imagine the farmers of Mýrdalur using this cave as an assembly place many years ago. The location is not just a cave; it's a glimpse into the Earth's geological past and a testament to the stunning natural beauty that Iceland has to offer.
A Taste of Local Culture
After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Tanginn, a harborfront eatery known for its stellar views and delicious food. I opted for the catch of the day, while Lena chose a hearty lamb shank. The food was excellent, and the harbor view added to the experience. The restaurant is family-friendly and has a cozy atmosphere.

As we savored our meal, we took a moment to appreciate the local art displayed throughout the restaurant, which added a unique touch to our dining experience.
In the afternoon, we decided to do some shopping. Our destination was Salka Verslun, a local shop known for its Icelandic fashion. Lena was particularly excited about this, as she loves discovering unique clothing and supporting local designers. The shop is more than just a clothing store; it's a beacon of Icelandic fashion situated in the picturesque town of Vestmannaeyjabær. Known for its warm and inviting atmosphere, the shop offers an impressive array of apparel that reflects the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Iceland.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kráin - Local Restaurant for dinner. Kráin is known for its filling and tasty food, and it’s a popular spot among locals. I decided to try the Icelandic lamb, while Lena went for the fish stew. Both dishes were hearty and flavorful, providing a perfect end to a day of exploration.

Looking Ahead
As we head into our final day tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the Skógar Museum and The Maritime Museum of Þórður Rafn. We’re also looking forward to having breakfast at Gott restaurant, lunch at Pizza 67, and a farewell dinner at Slippurinn. And, of course, we’ll be sure to stop by Moe's Bar for a drink to celebrate the end of our trip.
This trip has been an incredible experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with Lena. The Westman Islands have exceeded all our expectations, and we’re already planning our return. It’s a place where nature, culture, and history come together in a truly unique way. I am looking forward to returning to Berlin, but I know that I will never forget the time Lena and I spent in Iceland.
Before I close out this blog post, I wanted to express my admiration for the local people, who have been so kind and helpful during our stay. I have always felt at home in Europe, and it is always a pleasure to experience the different cultures and customs.
Tomorrow, we head back to Reykjavik before our flight back to Berlin. I am interested to see what the Skógar Museum and The Maritime Museum of Þórður Rafn have to offer, and I am excited to reflect more on our journey as we head home.
Until tomorrow,
Jan
