Day 7: Coastal Escapades: Discovering Faro's Hidden Gems
Explore the serene beauty of Cabo de Santa Maria and the unique Salinas do Grelha in Ria Formosa, a day of tranquil discovery.
A Day of Discovery Along Faro's Coastline
Today was a day of exploring the lesser-known corners of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a welcome change of pace after the bustling markets and charming towns I've visited earlier in the week. It's amazing how much tranquility you can find just a short distance from the city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Julias, a spot recommended by several locals for its beachfront views and traditional Portuguese pastries. Fuelling up with a strong coffee and a pastel de nata, I felt ready to tackle whatever the day had in store. It’s funny, I’ve always been more of a savory breakfast person back in Berlin, but there’s something about being by the sea that makes a sweet pastry irresistible. Perhaps it's the salty air mixing with the sugary goodness.
First on the agenda was Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. To get there, I hopped on a ferry to Ilha Deserta, also known as Barreta Island. The ferry ride itself was a treat, with the cool sea breeze and the sun shining on the water. As we approached the island, I could see the long stretch of sandy beach and the wooden structure that marks the cape.

The walk to Cabo de Santa Maria from the ferry stop was longer than I anticipated, but the scenery was well worth it. The island is aptly named; it felt like I was the only person for miles. The only sounds were the waves crashing on the shore and the occasional seagull overhead. The landscape was starkly beautiful, with sand dunes and sparse vegetation. I even spotted a few interesting birds, though I definitely need to brush up on my bird identification skills. Lena would have loved this, she always knows the names of all the birds. I made a mental note to bring her here next time.
Reaching the cape, I took some time to simply soak in the view. The vastness of the ocean was humbling, and it was a good reminder of the power of nature. I took a few photos, of course, trying to capture the feeling of being at the edge of the world. As a software developer, I spend so much time in front of a screen, it's essential for me to reconnect with nature and remember there is more to the world than just code.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest places.
After a morning of solitary exploration, my stomach started rumbling, signaling it was time for lunch. I made my way back to Faro and headed to Bel'mare Gastrobar - Praia de Faro, a place I had spotted the other day. Located right on the beach, this gastrobar boasts amazing views of both the ocean and the city. It was easy to see why it is a popular spot.

I opted for a table on the rooftop terrace and ordered a seafood cataplana, a traditional Algarve dish. The food was delicious, and the view was simply stunning. I could see the planes taking off from Faro airport in the distance, and the surfers riding the waves below. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were friendly. It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a leisurely lunch. The blend of beach club charm with the flavors of a tapas bar was a great experience.
With the afternoon stretching ahead, I decided to visit Salinas do Grelha, traditional salt pans located just outside of Olhão. I'd read about them and was intrigued by the idea of floating in a saltwater pool, similar to the Dead Sea.

The salt pans were easy to find, and the landscape was fascinating. The large, shallow pools of water shimmered in the sunlight, and the air was thick with the scent of salt. I took a guided tour, learning about the traditional methods of salt harvesting that have been used here for centuries. It was interesting to hear about the different types of salt and how they are produced. From May to September you can witness the age-old techniques being used.
Of course, the highlight of the visit was the chance to float in the saltwater pool. The water was incredibly salty, and I floated effortlessly on the surface. It was a strange and wonderful sensation, feeling weightless and completely relaxed. Apparently, the high salt concentration is good for your skin and muscles, so it was a therapeutic experience as well. I can see why it’s called the “Dead Sea” of Portugal! I even tried applying some of the mud to my skin, which is said to be a great exfoliator. I have to admit, my skin felt incredibly soft afterwards.
After a refreshing float, I felt invigorated and ready for dinner. I chose Maria's Restaurant and Beach, Algarve, enticed by its lively atmosphere and beachfront location. It seems like a popular spot, with many people enjoying the live music and stunning beach views.

The restaurant was buzzing with energy, and I was lucky to snag a table with a view of the sunset. I ordered grilled prawns with garlic, chilli and coriander, recommended by the waiter, and they were absolutely delicious. The seafood here is incredibly fresh, and the Portuguese know how to cook it to perfection. The sunset was spectacular, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Zona Cocktail Lounge Bar, a nearby bar known for its creative cocktails. I sipped on a refreshing drink, enjoying the cool evening breeze and reflecting on the day's adventures. It’s nice to unwind and people-watch after a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to take a boat tour in Olhão and visit Jardim da Alagoa. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the Ria Formosa from the water and exploring another charming town. For now, I’m content to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Algarve. It’s amazing how quickly this place has grown on me. Maybe Lena and I should consider spending our retirement here…
