A Day of History and Nature

Today was a beautiful blend of history and nature, a perfect representation of what I hoped to experience on this solo trip to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. I started my day in the charming town of Tavira, soaking in its historical atmosphere before venturing into the peaceful landscapes of Fonte Benémola. It's amazing how much variety this region offers in just a single day.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Gigi's Beach restaurant Quinta do Lago. The location is unique, a wooden beach house on high stilts located in the middle of the Ria Formosa wetlands. Getting there involved a walk across the nature reserve via wooden walkways, which was a treat in itself. The views from the restaurant were stunning, even with the sound of planes taking off now and then. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. It’s quite popular, and I can see why a reservation is essential.

After breakfast, I made my way to Castelo de Tavira. The castle's origins date back to the Moorish rule in the 11th century. It was amazing to stand on the ramparts of this partially ruined hilltop castle, taking in the panoramic views of Tavira. The town looked picturesque from above, with the Gilão River winding through it. The castle itself is a testament to the Algarve's rich multicultural heritage, with elements of Moorish and Christian military engineering. I learned that the castle was built to protect the river crossing before the bridge was constructed in the 12th century.

Wandering through the castle grounds, I found it hard to believe that this place was once used as a cemetery after a major earthquake in 1755. Now, it’s a peaceful urban retreat, offering a glimpse into Portugal's complex medieval past. The entrance is free, which made it even more appealing. I spent a good hour exploring every nook and cranny, imagining what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago. It’s fascinating how history is layered in places like this.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Leaving Tavira, I drove inland to Fonte Benémola, a protected landscape known for its natural springs and diverse wildlife. The drive itself was lovely, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the countryside. I parked at the designated area and started on the PR16 LLE Fonte Benémola trail. The trail is a circular route of about 4.2 km, rated as easy, which was perfect for a relaxing afternoon hike.

The hike began along a dirt road, surrounded by typical Algarvian Barrocal vegetation. The landscape was rich in flora and fauna, and I made sure to keep my camera ready. Soon, the trail led me to the Menalva River, and the scenery transformed into a lush, green oasis. The contrast was striking – from the dry, rocky terrain to this vibrant, watery haven. I passed by information panels about the local flora and floodplains, enhancing my understanding of the area's ecology.

One of the highlights was reaching the Olho (spring) and the Fonte Benémola itself. The water was crystal clear, and the sound of it trickling through the landscape was incredibly soothing. I even spotted some poldras (step-stone bridges) that allowed me to cross the water line. The trail is also part of the Via Algarviana, a longer hiking route, and overlaps with the pedestrian route of Sete Fontes. I took a moment to sit by the water, enjoying the tranquility and the sounds of nature.

Continuing along the trail, I passed an old lime kiln and a second picnic park. The path then crossed the river, leading me past the house of an old basket maker. It was fascinating to imagine the traditional crafts that once thrived here. Eventually, the trail looped back to the Municipal Road 524, and I made my way back to the parking lot. The entire hike took about an hour, and it was a refreshing escape into nature.

After the hike, I headed to Maria's Restaurant and Beach, Algarve for lunch. Located on Praia do Garrão Poente, the restaurant offered stunning ocean views. I indulged in some fresh seafood, enjoying the relaxed beachside vibe. The menu had a wide variety of options, from Oyster Starter to Fresh Calamari Rings. I opted for the grilled sea bass, which was flaky and full of flavor.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at 2 Passos, a restaurant known for its Mediterranean cuisine and stunning views of the Ria Formosa. The restaurant is perched on high stilts, overlooking the sand dunes. I started with the Clams “Bulhão Pato”, cooked in the Algarvian style with garlic, oil, and coriander. For the main course, I chose the fresh codfish Algarve style. The flavors were incredible, a perfect representation of the region’s culinary heritage. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, making it a memorable dining experience.

To cap off the evening, I visited The Cheeky Pup, an Irish gastropub in Quinta do Lago. It was a lively spot with a friendly atmosphere. I enjoyed a pint of local beer while listening to some live music. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. It's interesting to find an Irish pub with a light, open feel of the Algarve.

As I head back to my accommodation, I am already thinking about tomorrow, my final day in Ria Formosa. The plan is to visit Quinta do Lago and explore a natural spring. I also intend to have breakfast at Restaurante Limoni Quinta do Lago, lunch at The Bold Octopus, and a farewell dinner at Restaurante Alambique. Before heading to the airport, I plan to visit Vintage & Fab for some last-minute souvenir shopping. It feels like just yesterday that I arrived, and I am sad to be leaving this beautiful place. I am really looking forward to sharing my experiences with Lena when I get home.

The Algarve seems to be getting into the Christmas spirit. The Wyndham Grand Algarve is hosting a Golden Christmas event on December 24 and 25, featuring traditional Portuguese dishes. Forum Algarve has opened its festive season with the 'Forum Algarve Xmas Experience,' including an ice rink and a Christmas market. Lagoa is preparing for its annual Living Statues festival on December 12 and 13.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to immerse myself in the local culture. Ria Formosa has exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
