Day 8: Coastal Wonders and Culinary Delights: A Day Exploring Vila Nova de Milfontes
Discover the natural beauty of Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha, savor local flavors, and unwind in Vila Nova de Milfontes.
Nature's Embrace and Evening Calm
Today was a day of embracing the natural beauty surrounding Vila Nova de Milfontes. From exploring a stunning nature reserve to savoring local culinary delights, it was a day filled with memorable experiences. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the freedom and flexibility of solo travel, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the local culture and landscape.
My day began with an early breakfast at Pizzaria Vicentina Lda. While technically in Aljezur, the morning commute was worth it. It was recommended to me by a local I met a few days ago. I had a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh bread, and strong coffee. The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal and warm hospitality. I made a mental note to try their pizza sometime, given the restaurant's name.
Fueled up, I set off to explore the Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha Nature Reserve. The reserve is a short drive north of Vila Nova de Milfontes. As I approached, I was immediately struck by the serene landscape. The lagoons, separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of land, create a unique and diverse ecosystem.

I decided to start my exploration with a walk along one of the trails. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of birds chirping and the gentle rustling of the wind through the reeds. According to some sources, over 270 bird species have been spotted in the reserve, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Though I'm not an avid birder myself, I couldn't help but appreciate the variety of avian life around me. I spotted several species I couldn't identify, their calls adding to the symphony of nature. Maybe Lena would have enjoyed this more than I did, she always had a knack for spotting wildlife.
The beauty of nature lies in its ability to provide solace and inspiration, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all living things.
The trail led me through different habitats, from reedbeds and marshes to willow woodlands. I learned that the lagoons are home to a variety of fish, including the European eel, and are an important stopover for migratory birds. The reserve is part of an important migratory corridor, offering resting places and abundant food resources for these travelers.
After a leisurely walk, I drove to Monte Carvalhal da Rocha. The views from the top were simply breathtaking. The landscape stretched out before me, a tapestry of green hills, rocky cliffs, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. I could see the coastline snaking its way south, the waves crashing against the shore.

I spent some time simply sitting there, soaking in the view and enjoying the peace and quiet. It was a perfect moment of solitude, a chance to reflect on my journey so far and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. I was reminded of hikes with Lena in the Harz Mountains, though the landscape here was vastly different, the sense of tranquility was the same.
As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back to Vila Nova de Milfontes, ready for a late lunch. I decided to try Rita , a restaurant known for its seafood. I opted for the grilled fish of the day, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant had a cozy, family-run feel, and the staff were attentive and welcoming.

In the evening, I had dinner at O Josué, another local favorite. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a traditional Portuguese dish, and it was hearty and satisfying. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the country's culinary heritage.

After dinner, I decided to check out Statera Milfontes - Cocktail Bar. I sipped on a expertly crafted cocktail while enjoying the lively atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha Nature Reserve and Monte Carvalhal da Rocha were definitely highlights, offering stunning natural beauty and a sense of peace. The local cuisine was also a treat, with each restaurant offering its own unique flavors and ambiance.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure on the Rota Vicentina. I plan to explore the Ecotrails and maybe spend some time at Camping Milfontes. I'll also be sure to grab breakfast at Sol e Mar and lunch at A Barca Tranquitanas. For dinner, I'm thinking of trying Papo Furado Portugal. Before heading back, I might pick up a souvenir at Casa Zé Paulino. I'm looking forward to one last day of exploration before heading back to Berlin. It will be good to see Lena again, and tell her of my adventures.
It's been an incredible journey, filled with stunning landscapes, delicious food, and warm hospitality. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this beautiful part of Portugal, and I look forward to sharing more of my travel adventures with you all.
Until next time, happy travels!
