Hidden Oasis and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took me from the cool embrace of freshwater springs to the windswept remnants of a fortress steeped in history. It’s these kinds of days that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to follow my curiosity wherever it leads, to linger in places that capture my imagination, and to reflect on the beauty and stories that surround me. I set out this morning with a simple plan, but as always, the Rota Vicentina had a few surprises in store.

The day began in Odeceixe, where I enjoyed breakfast at Altinho - Tapas e Petiscos. The spot had a charming, bistro-like atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and strong coffee, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The reviews I read mentioned their great tapas, but it felt a bit early for that.

Chasing Waterfalls at Pego das Pias

My first destination was Pego das Pias, a spot I’d seen pictures of and was eager to experience firsthand. Leaving Odeceixe, the trail wound inland, the landscape transforming from coastal scrub to more verdant, rolling hills. The June sun was already warming the earth, and I was grateful for the hat and sunscreen I’d packed. I even remembered to apply it this time! The walk was peaceful, the only sounds the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves under my boots.

Reaching Pego das Pias felt like stumbling upon a secret oasis. The Ribeira do Tôr, usually a modest stream, had carved a series of small waterfalls and pools into the dark schist rock. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding vegetation lush and green. It was the perfect place to cool off. I took a refreshing dip in one of the pools, the cool water a welcome contrast to the warm day. I spent a good hour there, simply enjoying the tranquility and the beauty of this hidden gem.

A Taste of History at Ribat da Atalaia

Leaving Pego das Pias, I continued towards the coast and Ribat da Atalaia. The landscape shifted again, becoming more rugged and exposed as I approached the sea. The wind picked up, carrying with it the scent of salt and the cries of gulls. As I approached the Ribat da Atalaia, the historical significance of the site was palpable.

The Ribat, perched on the Ponta da Atalaia peninsula, is an archaeological site containing the remains of a Muslim fortification built around 1130. It was built by the Sufi master Ibn Qasî, a leading political and religious figure in al-Andalus. This fortress-monastery served both as a place for prayer and military defense. Walking around the site, I could almost hear the echoes of the past – the chanting of warrior-monks, the clang of swords, the crashing of waves against the cliffs below. The views from the peninsula were breathtaking, the Atlantic stretching out to the horizon in a vast expanse of blue. I imagined the people who lived here centuries ago, their lives shaped by the sea and the ever-present threat of invasion.

The Ribat was abandoned around 1151, and now only ruins remain. Archaeologists have been excavating the site since 2001, uncovering its rich history. The site includes remains of mosques, a minaret, and a necropolis. Standing there, I was struck by the layers of history, the rise and fall of civilizations, and the enduring power of the human spirit. It's believed that the minaret was used as a watchtower in the 14th century. Excavations have revealed a necropolis with graves oriented towards Mecca, and stelae inscriptions that provide insights into the lives of those who lived there. It’s amazing to think that this site, once a bustling fortress, lay hidden for centuries, only to be rediscovered in recent times.

Coastal Flavors in Aljezur

After a day of hiking and historical exploration, I was ready for a good meal. I headed to Aljezur, a charming town nestled in the hills a few kilometers inland. For lunch, I stopped at A Tasca, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I ordered grilled fish, simply prepared with olive oil, garlic, and lemon. It was fresh and delicious, the perfect way to refuel after a long day on the trail. The weather was mostly cloudy, but it didn't detract from the experience.

In the evening, I had dinner at Restaurante Costa Vicentina, drawn in by its reputation for fresh seafood and stunning views. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering panoramic vistas of the coastline. I savored a seafood cataplana, a traditional Portuguese stew brimming with fish, shellfish, and vegetables. It was a hearty and flavorful dish, the perfect ending to a day of exploration. Reviews online highlight the fresh ingredients and authentic flavors, and I can certainly attest to that.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Taberna Vicentina, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, soaking in the ambiance and chatting with some of the locals. It was a great way to experience the town's vibrant culture and unwind after a busy day.

Reflections on the Day and Anticipation for Tomorrow

As I walked back, under a sky full of stars, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the refreshing waters of Pego das Pias to the ancient echoes of Ribat da Atalaia, and the delicious flavors of Aljezur, it had been a day of discovery and connection. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the chance to experience new places, learn about different cultures, and connect with the world around me.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Castle of Aljezur and Ponta da Atalaia. I’m also hoping to visit Born to Be Atentejano, a local shop. I’ve heard it’s a great place to find unique souvenirs and local products. I’m looking forward to another day of adventure on the Rota Vicentina. I'm thinking of Lena, and how much she would have loved today's discoveries. I'll be sure to pick up a little something for her at Born to Be Atentejano tomorrow.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
