Echoes of the Past in Aljezur

Today was a day of exploring Aljezur, a town steeped in history and surrounded by the raw beauty of the Portuguese coastline. It's amazing how much you can discover when you just set out with a curious mind and a pair of comfortable shoes. From ancient castles to breathtaking viewpoints and delicious local cuisine, Aljezur offered a rich tapestry of experiences that I'm excited to share.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sol Dourado. I fueled up with some local pastries and strong coffee, ready for a day of exploration. The reviews I had read mentioned the friendly host, Rosa, and they were spot on. She made me feel right at home and gave me some great tips for exploring the area. It's these little interactions that make solo travel so rewarding. After breakfast, I made my way towards the Castle of Aljezur.

Journey to the Castle

The Castle of Aljezur stands proudly overlooking the town, a testament to the region's rich Moorish history. As I climbed the winding path to the entrance, I couldn't help but imagine the countless generations who had walked the same route. The castle dates back to the 10th century when the Moors ruled this part of Portugal. It was the last castle in the Algarve to be taken by the Christians during the Reconquista in 1249. The stones themselves seemed to whisper tales of battles and conquests.

Inside the castle walls, I wandered through the remnants of the keep and the well-preserved walls. The views from the top were simply breathtaking. The rolling hills stretched out in every direction, dotted with charming villages and lush greenery. From this vantage point, it was easy to understand why the Moors had chosen this location for their fortress. The castle offered a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal strategic point.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not about finding new things, but about seeing old things in a new light.

Coastal Views at Ponta da Atalaia

After soaking in the history at the castle, I decided to explore the coastline. My destination was Ponta da Atalaia, a scenic point known for its stunning views. The walk there took me through fragrant valleys and past small farms, offering a glimpse into the rural life of the region. The air was filled with the scent of wildflowers and the sound of birdsong, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Berlin.

As I approached Ponta da Atalaia, the landscape transformed. The rugged coastline came into view, with dramatic cliffs plunging into the turquoise waters of the Atlantic. The views were simply mesmerizing. I could see for miles in every direction, the coastline stretching out like a ribbon against the horizon. The waves crashed against the rocks below, creating a symphony of sound that was both calming and exhilarating.

Ponta da Atalaia is also home to the ruins of a 12th-century Islamic fishing village. It's incredible to think that people lived and worked in this dramatic landscape centuries ago. I spent some time exploring the ruins, imagining what life must have been like for those early inhabitants. It was a humbling experience, connecting me to the past in a tangible way.

A Taste of Alentejo

For lunch, I stopped at O Tarro, a local restaurant known for its traditional Alentejo cuisine. I decided to try the *Tiborna Alentejana*, a hearty bread soup with garlic, olive oil, and herbs. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning of hiking and exploring. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It felt like stepping into someone's home, a feeling I always appreciate when traveling solo.

In the afternoon, I took a leisurely stroll through the town of Aljezur. I stumbled upon Born to Be Atentejano, a charming little shop selling local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Lena and the kids, wanting to bring a piece of Portugal back home with me. The shopkeeper was a wealth of knowledge about the area, sharing stories and tips about the best places to visit.

Dinner with a View

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Zé Inácio for dinner. This restaurant is located in Monte Clérigo, offering stunning views of the coastline. I ordered the grilled octopus, a local specialty, and savored every bite as I watched the sun dip below the horizon. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking backdrop to my meal. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflections on Aljezur

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. Aljezur had surprised me with its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are found in the unexpected places, in the small towns and hidden corners of the world. I am so glad I decided to spend the day here.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my journey along the Rota Vicentina, heading towards Praia da Arrifana and Serra do Cercal. I'm looking forward to more coastal views and exploring the natural landscapes of this beautiful region. I might even stop by Kalux Beach Bar & Surf School for a drink. I'm excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.

For now, it's time to rest and recharge. Goodnight from Aljezur! It's moments like these that make me appreciate the freedom and solitude of solo travel, allowing me to connect with new places and cultures on my own terms.

It's been a good day and I am looking forward to the next one!
