Explore Kyoto's iconic tower, serene palaces, and vibrant shopping streets on the final day of my solo cultural journey through Japan.
Saying Goodbye to Kyoto: A Day of Exploration & Culinary Delights
As my solo journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and sights I've encountered over the past two weeks. Today was a day of soaking in the last moments of this beautiful city, from its towering landmarks to its hidden spiritual corners and bustling shopping streets. While I'm eager to return to Berlin and share my stories with Lena, I know a part of me will forever remain in the serene gardens and vibrant streets of Kyoto.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. The cozy atmosphere and the array of vegan dishes were a delightful start to the day. It was a bit pricey, but the experience was worth it. The set menu was full of unique flavors, and I enjoyed every bite. I especially loved the inari kiwi tofu pocket and the deep-fried mochi. It was a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring Kyoto.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I made my way to Kyoto Tower. Rising high above the city, it offered a panoramic view that was simply breathtaking. From the observation deck, I could see the sprawling cityscape, dotted with temples and gardens, stretching out towards the horizon. The tower itself is a modern marvel, built without a steel frame, and its unique design stands out against the traditional landscape of Kyoto. I spent a good hour up there, taking photos and soaking in the view, trying to imprint the image in my memory.

Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a city is to see it from above, gaining a new perspective on its beauty and complexity.
After descending from the tower, I decided to visit the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace. Securing a spot on one of the free guided tours required a bit of planning, but it was well worth the effort. The palace, built in 1630 as a retirement residence for Emperor Gomizuno, exudes a sense of tranquility and history. Although the original buildings were destroyed by fire, the gardens remain meticulously maintained, offering a glimpse into imperial life and Japanese garden artistry. I strolled along the winding paths, admiring the elegant water features and carefully arranged vegetation. The audio guide provided insightful commentary, enhancing my understanding of the palace's significance.

Next on my itinerary was the Kyoto Ebisu Shrine, known as one of the three most popular shrines dedicated to Ebisu, the god of wealth and good fortune. As I approached the shrine, I noticed the jolly figure of Ebisu, with his telltale fishing pole, adorning the entrance. The shrine exuded a sense of festivity, with locals and tourists alike praying for success in their businesses and personal lives. I learned that Ebisu is the patron of fishermen and business people, and his image can be found throughout the grounds. I even tapped on the wooden plate at the back of the shrine, hoping Ebisu, who is said to be hard of hearing, would hear my wishes.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I ventured into the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This bustling arcade, stretching for about 500 meters, is a shopper's paradise, offering a mix of traditional stores, trendy boutiques, and souvenir shops. The street was alive with energy, as locals, tourists, and students on school excursions mingled amidst the vibrant displays. I strolled along the covered arcade, browsing through the various shops, and soaking in the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect place to pick up some last-minute souvenirs for Lena and my friends back in Berlin.

For lunch, I decided to try the Kyoto Umemori Sushi School. It was a unique experience that combined culinary education with a delicious meal. I learned the art of making sushi from a professional chef, and then I got to enjoy my own creations for lunch. The sushi was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the experience was both fun and informative. It was a great way to immerse myself in Japanese culture and learn a new skill.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Chihana for a final, memorable dinner. This Michelin-starred kappo restaurant offered a culinary experience that was truly exceptional. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chefs and waitresses paid great attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the meal was perfect. It was a fitting end to my culinary adventures in Kyoto.

The service was exceptional. The chefs and waitresses paid great attention to us and came across as genuinely enthusiastic about the food and the desire for us to enjoy ourselves. We felt incredibly welcome. The grilled aubergine with sesame soy vinegar was simple but delicious. The sashimi was followed by fried ginko nuts, pickled cucumber, and tiny fish. The grilled Spanish mackerel with soy vinegar and mild green chilli pepper was superb.
Reflecting on my time in Kyoto, I realize how much I've grown and learned. Traveling solo has pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to rely on my own instincts and resourcefulness. I've discovered a newfound appreciation for Japanese culture and a deeper understanding of myself. While I'm eager to return to my familiar routine in Berlin, I know that the memories and experiences I've gained in Kyoto will stay with me forever. Perhaps Lena and I can return together someday.
As I prepare to leave Kyoto tomorrow, I carry with me a sense of gratitude and fulfillment. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, and I'm excited to share my stories and photos with Lena and my friends back home. Until next time, Kyoto!
I'm already looking forward to planning our next adventure, Lena. Maybe we'll explore the Harz Mountains together this summer, or perhaps venture further afield to discover another hidden gem in Europe.
For now, it's time to pack my bags and prepare for the journey home, carrying with me the spirit of Kyoto and the memories of a lifetime.
I’ll need to remember to buy a travel adapter when I get back to Berlin.
Safe travels,
Jan
