A Day of Reflection and Discovery

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of serene reflection and exciting discovery, as I continued to explore the multifaceted city of Kyoto. From the tranquil gardens of ancient temples to the powerful tributes to those lost in war, and the thrilling world of samurai and ninja, Kyoto offered a rich tapestry of experiences that resonated deeply. It was a day that reminded me why I chose this solo journey – the freedom to immerse myself fully in each moment, to follow my curiosity wherever it led.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mezopotamia Kebab House. I know, Turkish cuisine in Japan sounds a bit out of place, but I was intrigued and decided to give it a try. I opted for a simple kebab, which was surprisingly delicious and provided a good energy boost for the day ahead. It's funny how sometimes the best travel experiences come from the most unexpected places. The staff was very welcoming, and it was a great way to start the day before diving into more traditional sights. It also reminded me of the kebab places back in Berlin, and how much I sometimes miss the familiar tastes of home.

First on my itinerary was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. Nestled in Kyoto's eastern mountains, the temple offered a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. As I wandered through the meticulously maintained moss garden, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The interplay of light and shadow on the moss-covered stones created a mesmerizing effect, and I spent a good while simply absorbing the tranquil atmosphere. The famous Kogetsudai sand mound was particularly striking, its perfectly raked lines a testament to the artistry and dedication of those who maintain it. I found myself contemplating the Zen philosophy of simplicity and beauty in imperfection, a concept that resonates deeply with me.

In the heart of Kyoto, history whispers through ancient stones and echoes in the silent gardens, inviting you to reflect on the past and embrace the present.

Leaving the Silver Pavilion, I made my way to Ryozen Kannon Temple, a place of profound significance. This temple serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the Pacific War. The towering 24-meter concrete statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, is a powerful sight, overlooking the grounds with a sense of compassion and peace. I took some time to explore the Reihaiden Hall, which houses countless small Buddhist tablets for those who perished in the war, including Korean victims. It was a sobering reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of remembrance. The temple's inclusive approach, honoring victims from all sides of the war, struck me as particularly poignant. It's a place that encourages reflection on the past, not with anger or resentment, but with a sense of healing and reconciliation.

After a reflective morning, I decided to inject some excitement into my day with a visit to the Kyoto Samurai & Ninja Museum. I’ve always been fascinated by the history and mystique surrounding these legendary warriors, and I was eager to learn more. The museum showcased an impressive collection of samurai armor, weapons, and artifacts from the Edo period. What truly set this museum apart was its interactive exhibits. I couldn't resist the opportunity to dress up in samurai armor and wield a katana – a truly unforgettable experience. I also tried my hand at throwing shuriken, the iconic ninja throwing stars. Let's just say my aim needs some improvement! The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the world of these skilled warriors, highlighting their code of honor, their martial arts prowess, and their significant role in Japanese history. I found myself imagining what it must have been like to live in those times, adhering to the strict Bushido code and dedicating oneself to the art of combat.

For lunch, I opted for Teppanyaki Minami. I decided to go for one of the lunch sets, which included a selection of grilled vegetables, miso soup and a perfectly cooked steak. It was a delightful culinary experience, watching the chef skillfully prepare the meal right in front of me. I took the time to savor each bite, appreciating the freshness of the ingredients and the artistry of the chef. It was a welcome break after a busy morning of sightseeing.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to BEE’S KNEES, a bar known for its Prohibition-era speakeasy vibe and creative cocktails. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away behind an unassuming yellow door with a bee sign. Inside, the atmosphere was dimly lit and welcoming, with a somewhat incongruous 1990s hip-hop soundtrack adding to the unique charm. I ordered one of their signature cocktails, the Astronaut, a concoction of Ki No Tea Gin, homemade cassis jam, fresh lemon, and in-house orange bitters. It was a complex and delicious drink, perfectly complementing the bar's quirky ambiance. I chatted with the bartender, who shared some insights into Kyoto's vibrant nightlife scene and recommended a few other hidden gems to explore. Sipping my cocktail, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich culture and history.

For dinner, I chose Masayoshi Japanese Dining, enticed by its reputation for serving carefully selected Japanese black beef sukiyaki in a traditional setting. The restaurant was housed in a beautifully renovated 150-year-old machiya, exuding an atmosphere of understated elegance. I opted for the sukiyaki course, which featured thinly sliced beef cooked in a savory broth with vegetables and tofu. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine and hospitality. I felt a sense of contentment as I savored the last bite, knowing that I had ended the day on a high note.

As I walked back to Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, the city was quiet. The air was cool, and the only sounds were the gentle hum of cicadas and the distant clatter of a train. I thought about tomorrow, and how I will be visiting Kenninji Temple, Nishi Honganji Temple, and the Kyoto Railway Museum. I am really looking forward to diving into more history and culture.

Back in my hotel room, I started writing this blog post, eager to share my experiences with you all. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding – the chance to learn, to grow, and to connect with new cultures and perspectives. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, and I can't wait to see what other treasures Kyoto has in store. I should probably start thinking about what souvenirs to bring back home for Lena. I am sure she will appreciate a traditional craft item.
