A Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto, Japan
Day 4: A Spiritual Sunday in Kyoto: Temples and Culinary Delights
Exploring Kyoto's ancient temples, savoring local flavors, and finding peace in the heart of Japan—a perfect Sunday adventure.
Sacred Spaces and Savory Bites
Today was a deep dive into the spiritual heart of Kyoto, a day marked by the serene beauty of ancient temples and the rich flavors of Japanese cuisine. It was a Sunday well spent, immersing myself in the cultural tapestry of this captivating city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. It might seem odd to start a day of traditional Japanese sightseeing with pizza, but I was ready for something other than asian cuisine. Plus, I'd read good reviews of the place. I opted for a simple margherita, and it was delicious. The crust was perfectly crisp, and the sauce had a tangy sweetness that woke up my taste buds. Fueled and ready, I set off to explore the Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates).

The Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain, was my first stop. Even in the relative chill of February, the energy of the place was palpable. The early morning light filtering through the gates created a mesmerizing effect, almost like walking through a tunnel of dreams. I took my time, ascending the path, stopping to admire the intricate carvings and the small, often quirky, fox statues that seemed to watch over the pilgrims. It was a steady climb, and I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but also in the profound sense of peace and history that permeates every corner.
Reaching the summit offered not only stunning views of Kyoto but also a profound sense of accomplishment. The air was crisp and clean, and the quiet solitude was a welcome contrast to the bustling city below. I spent a few moments simply breathing it in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique and sacred place. I even saw people wearing Kimonos, taking photos in scenic locations.
Next on my itinerary was Tōfuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens and impressive architecture.

The temple grounds were expansive, and I wandered through the various halls and gardens, each offering a different perspective on the beauty of simplicity. The Zen garden, with its meticulously raked gravel and carefully placed stones, was particularly captivating. It was a place for quiet contemplation, a space to clear my mind and find a sense of inner peace.
By now, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I headed to Fujiya for lunch.

This restaurant is apparently famous for it's freshwater fish dishes. I decided to try the Usuzukuri carp, served with homemade ponzu vinegar. It was an exquisite dish, and the carp was incredibly fresh. The ponzu vinegar added a tangy and refreshing flavor that perfectly complemented the fish. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into creating such a culinary masterpiece.
My final temple visit of the day was to Sanjūsangendō Temple, home to 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy.

The sheer scale of the hall and the sight of so many golden statues was truly awe-inspiring. Each statue had its own unique expression and pose, creating a sense of individuality within the collective. It was a powerful reminder of the diversity and complexity of human experience.
As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a Kobe beef steak dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION.

I'd heard so much about Kobe beef, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was elegant and refined, and the staff were incredibly attentive. I ordered a sirloin steak, cooked medium-rare, and it was simply divine. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was an indulgent experience, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
To cap off the evening, I ventured to The Common One Bar Kyoto, a modern bar with a traditional Kyoto atmosphere.

The entrance was a little hard to find, but it was well worth the effort. The bar had tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a unique blend of tradition and modernity. I ordered a brandy-based cocktail, and it was expertly crafted and delicious. The bartenders were attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
The weather in Kyoto today was fairly typical for February, with temperatures hovering around 7°C (45°F). It was a bit breezy, and I was glad I had my wool coat and scarf to keep warm. There was a mix of sun and clouds, but thankfully no rain or snow.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Kyoto's cultural treasures. My itinerary includes visits to Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path, and Nanzen-ji Temple. I'm also planning to do some shopping at Kyoto Avanti and enjoy a French dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the plum blossoms at Heian Shrine, as February is the season when they start to bloom.
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about how lucky I am to be able to experience such a beautiful and culturally rich city. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of inspiring a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty of the world. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where spirituality and artistry intertwine. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I also made a note to pick up a travel adapter tomorrow. It's one of the essentials I forgot, and I'd like to be able to charge my camera without any issues. I think I can find one at Kyoto Avanti.
