A View to Remember

Today was all about soaking in the panoramic beauty of Chefchaouen. After four days of wandering through the enchanting blue alleys, Marie and I, along with our friends, decided to dedicate a day to finding the best viewpoints the city had to offer. And let me tell you, it was absolutely worth it!

Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Mounir Food. I opted for the classic omelette with mint tea, while Marie chose the crêpes. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can give you such a vibrant taste of the local culture.

Fueled up, we set off to conquer the first viewpoint of the day: the City View Point. The walk there was an experience in itself, navigating through the labyrinthine streets of the medina. Every corner turned revealed a new photo opportunity, with the blue-washed walls creating a mesmerizing backdrop. I couldn’t help but stop every few steps to capture the moment, much to the amusement of my friends. Even though I miss my son Thomas and our cycling trips through the Antwerp port, these moments with friends are equally precious.

Reaching the City View Point, we were rewarded with an incredible vista of Chefchaouen stretching out before us. The sea of blue buildings against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains was a sight to behold. I took out my camera, snapping ছবি after ছবি, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Marie, ever the historian, pointed out the architectural details, sharing anecdotes about the city’s past. It’s moments like these that make traveling with her so enriching.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the breathtaking views that reveal the city's soul.

Next on our list was the View Point, another spot promising stunning perspectives. This one required a bit more of a hike, taking us slightly outside the main part of town. As we ascended, the views became even more spectacular, offering a different angle on the city and the surrounding landscape. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine from the nearby mountains. I even spotted some locals herding goats along the hillside, a scene straight out of a postcard.

For lunch, we ventured to The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. The restaurant's name alone was enough to pique our interest, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The decor was enchanting, with traditional Moroccan lamps casting a warm glow over the dining area. We indulged in a variety of dishes, including tagine and orange chicken, all bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, with our server, Reda, making us feel right at home. I made a mental note to try recreating the tagine recipe back home in Antwerp – a little taste of Morocco to brighten up our Belgian kitchen.

After lunch, we took some time to simply wander through the medina, soaking in the atmosphere. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, vibrant marketplaces, and friendly locals, each encounter adding to the charm of Chefchaouen. I even found a small antique shop, reminiscent of my own workshop back home. I couldn’t resist purchasing a beautifully crafted wooden box, a perfect addition to my collection.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Sunset at sunset, a local bar known for its stunning views and relaxed vibe. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our day of exploration. We ordered fresh orange juice and settled in to watch the sun dip below the horizon. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, casting a golden glow over the blue city. It was a truly magical moment, one that I’ll cherish for a long time.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Chefchaouen's cultural heart by visiting the Grand Mosque and Bab El Ain. I'm particularly excited to see the Grand Mosque, as I've read so much about its historical significance. And of course, no trip is complete without a bit of shopping, so we'll be making a stop at Jabir shop chefchaouen. Marie is already eyeing some Berber carpets, so I have a feeling my wallet will be a bit lighter by the end of the day!

As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen has truly captured my heart, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. The blend of stunning views, delicious food, and vibrant culture is simply intoxicating, I almost forgot about the portable phone charger and hat I forgot to pack. It is a good thing Marie always remembers those things.

Our last meal of the day was at Hôtel restaurant La fuente, which provided a delightful end to a day filled with exploration and scenic beauty. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and we enjoyed traditional Moroccan dishes that were expertly prepared. The tagine was a standout, and the staff were incredibly friendly, enhancing our dining experience. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day’s adventures and enjoy the flavors of Chefchaouen.
