Day 12: Elevated Views and Coastal Delights: A Day of Exploration on the Pelješac Peninsula
Join me as I explore the heights of Sveti Ilija and the serene Kolocep Lighthouse, savoring local flavors and coastal beauty along the way.
A Day of Heights and Coastal Lights
Today was a day of contrasts, from the challenging heights of Sveti Ilija to the serene beauty of Kolocep Lighthouse. It was a day filled with physical exertion, breathtaking views, and the simple pleasures of good food and good company. Join me as I recount our adventures.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Konoba Portun in Potomje. Klaus and I, along with our friends, fueled up with local delicacies, preparing ourselves for the hike ahead. I always find that a good meal sets the tone for a day of exploration, and Konoba Portun did not disappoint. The riblja pašteta (fish pâté) and octopus salad were particularly delightful, offering a true taste of Dalmatia. It reminded me of my childhood in Kolašin, where fresh, local ingredients were the heart of every meal. It’s these simple, authentic flavors that I truly cherish. After breakfast, we packed our backpacks, making sure to bring plenty of water, a lesson I learned the hard way during a previous hiking trip in the Odenwald forest near Heidelberg.

Our main objective for the day was to conquer Sveti Ilija, the highest peak on the Pelješac Peninsula. Standing at 961 meters, it promised panoramic views that were simply irresistible. The ascent was challenging, especially under the August sun, but the camaraderie among our group kept our spirits high. Klaus, with his background in archaeology, kept us entertained with stories of ancient settlements and the mountain's historical significance. He even mentioned that Sveti Ilija was also known as Mons vipera (Viper's mountain) or Perun's mountain. The trails were marked with red-and-white signs, guiding us through the rugged terrain. As we climbed, the landscape transformed from lush greenery to rocky terrain, offering glimpses of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. We chose what I learned was the most attractive route, which started in Orebic.

The view from the top was worth every drop of sweat, a breathtaking panorama that stretched across the peninsula and beyond.
Reaching the summit of Sveti Ilija was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were absolutely stunning, encompassing the entire Pelješac Peninsula, the islands of Korčula, Hvar, and Brač, and even the Italian coast in the distance. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as we took in the breathtaking scenery, snapping photos and simply savoring the moment. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the beauty and grandeur of nature.
After descending from Sveti Ilija, we were famished. We drove to Agroturizam Kapor for a late lunch. This charming restaurant, nestled in the village of Stankovići, offered a taste of authentic Croatian cuisine with a modern twist. We indulged in peka and grilled seafood, all made with locally sourced ingredients. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax and refuel after our strenuous hike. The restaurant also boasts stunning views, which added to the overall dining experience.

With our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we decided to explore another gem of the Pelješac Peninsula: Kolocep Lighthouse. Situated on the island of Koločep, one of the Elaphiti Islands, the lighthouse promised a serene coastal experience. We took a short ferry ride from the mainland, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the picturesque views of the Adriatic. As we approached the island, the lighthouse stood tall against the horizon, a beacon of maritime history and natural beauty.

The island of Koločep, also known as Kalamota Island, is known for its lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil atmosphere. We strolled along the coastal paths, taking in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. The lighthouse itself was a sight to behold, with its striking architecture and picturesque setting. We learned about its history, how it has been guiding sailors for decades, and how it remains a symbol of the island's maritime heritage. The panoramic views from the lighthouse were simply breathtaking, offering glimpses of neighboring islands and the vast Adriatic Sea.
Before heading back to our rental home, we made a stop at Beach Bar Fig in Žuljana. This laid-back bar offered a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the sunset. We sipped on local wines, shared stories, and laughed as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was a perfect end to a day of exploration and adventure.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the diverse experiences we had enjoyed. From the challenging hike to Sveti Ilija to the serene beauty of Kolocep Lighthouse, the Pelješac Peninsula had once again captivated us with its charm and allure. It was a day of physical exertion, breathtaking views, and simple pleasures, a day that I will cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Počitelj Fortress and Uvala Vućine, and perhaps do some souvenir shopping in Ston [If last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. But for now, I am content to rest and savor the memories of this incredible day. The Pelješac Peninsula continues to surprise and delight, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is simply irresistible. I am so grateful to be sharing this experience with my friends, and I look forward to what tomorrow brings.
Our evening culminated at Luka's Taverna Kobaš for dinner. Tucked away in a secluded bay, this family-run restaurant offered a quintessential Dalmatian dining experience. The menu, as I understand, changes daily based on what's been freshly caught. We savored oysters, mussels, and grilled fish, all prepared with the utmost care and attention to detail. The atmosphere was intimate and relaxing, allowing us to unwind after a day of adventure. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. The owner and his family are very friendly, and the service was fantastic.
