Today was a day where the veil between the present and the ancient world felt particularly thin. It was a journey of both physical and spiritual elevation, as I explored the serene heights of a mountainside monastery and walked the age-old paths that pilgrims once trod. These experiences weren't just about seeing places; they were about feeling the pulse of history and connecting with the enduring spirit of Delphi.



My day began with a hearty breakfast at Molos Cafe. The strong Greek coffee was just what I needed to prepare for the day's adventures. It's funny, isn't it? How a simple cup of coffee can become a ritual, a way of connecting with the local culture. I remember Klaus used to always tease me about my need for a strong morning coffee. Fueled and ready, I set off to visit the Profitis Ilias Monastery. The drive up was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Delphi region. As I stepped through the monastery gates, a sense of tranquility washed over me. The monastery, dedicated to the Prophet Elijah, has a rich history, serving as a refuge for fighters during the 1821 Revolution. The architecture was beautiful, with stone walls and beautifully adorned chapels. I spent some time wandering through the grounds, admiring the meticulously maintained gardens and the exquisite frescoes within the chapels. The silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant bleating of sheep – a world away from the bustling tourist sites I'd visited earlier in the week.

After the monastery, I decided to embark on a hike along the Ancient Path Kirra Delphi. This path, once used by pilgrims traveling to the Oracle, promised a journey through history and nature. The path starts its descent, and as I started, the views were simply stunning. The path was well-maintained, and I could imagine the countless feet that had trod this way over the centuries. The stones beneath my feet seemed to hum with stories, whispering tales of ancient travelers seeking wisdom and guidance.

The path wound its way through olive groves, the gnarled trees standing as silent witnesses to the passage of time. The Amfissa Olive Grove, one of the country's most ancient, boasts a history that spans an impressive 3,000 years. In areas with slopes, the land is thoughtfully terraced, with the olive groves comprising parcels known as “lachidia,” each separated by raised trafia berms designed to collect rainwater. I paused to examine the ancient olive trees, their trunks thick and twisted with age. It's humbling to think of the history these trees have witnessed, the generations they have nourished.



As I descended, the landscape opened up, offering views of the Corinthian Gulf in the distance. The air was filled with the scent of wild herbs and the sound of birdsong. It was a sensory feast, a reminder of the simple beauty of the natural world. I thought of my garden back in Heidelberg, and how much I missed the feeling of soil between my fingers. Perhaps I'll plant some Greek herbs when I get back, a little reminder of this journey.


The path eventually led me to the outskirts of Chrisso village. In ancient times, the city of Crissa served as a haven for the esteemed visitors seeking guidance from the oracle. I decided to stop for lunch at Kalýba in Arachova, a charming taverna known for its authentic Greek cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made me feel right at home. I ordered moussaka, a classic Greek dish, and a glass of local wine. The food was delicious, the flavors rich and comforting. The staff were friendly and welcoming, eager to share their recommendations and stories. It was the perfect way to refuel after my hike, and I savored every bite.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at DIONYSOS JEWELRY. As I pack my bags, I know that I will be taking home more than just souvenirs; I will be carrying memories and insights that will stay with me long after I leave Delphi. The trip might be coming to an end, but the journey within continues.
