Day 2: Whispers of Windmills and Cosmic Echoes: A Day of Discovery on Saaremaa
Exploring the mystical Kaali crater and charming Angla windmills on Saaremaa Island, where history and nature intertwine beautifully.
Saaremaa's Enchanting Embrace
Today was a day of remarkable contrasts and captivating discoveries here on Saaremaa. It felt like stepping back in time and simultaneously touching the edge of the cosmos. From the iconic windmills of Angla to the mystifying Kaali crater, the island revealed layers of history and natural wonder that left me utterly spellbound. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share these experiences.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Sõstar köök & baar in Kuressaare. Markus and I enjoyed some local pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for the adventures that awaited us. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant atmosphere that set the perfect tone for the day. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal and the promise of exciting explorations.
Angla Windmill Park: A Step Back in Time
Our first destination was the Angla Windmill Park, a place where time seems to slow down. As we approached, the sight of the traditional wooden windmills against the backdrop of the rolling landscape was simply breathtaking. These windmills, once vital to the island's economy, now stand as proud symbols of Saaremaa's heritage. I could almost hear the whispers of the past as the sails turned slowly in the gentle breeze.

Wandering through the park, I felt transported to a simpler time. Each windmill had its own unique character, weathered by years of wind and sun. I climbed inside one of the mills, marveling at the intricate wooden machinery and imagining the miller hard at work, grinding grain into flour. It was a hands-on history lesson that brought the past to life. The crisp September air carried the scent of wood and earth, enhancing the sensory experience.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us back to our roots, reminding us of the ingenuity and resilience of those who came before us.
I couldn't help but think of my own family history as I explored the windmills. My ancestors, like many here, relied on the land for their livelihoods. Seeing these structures, so essential to their way of life, gave me a deeper connection to the past and a greater appreciation for the simple technologies that sustained communities for generations. It’s humbling to realize how much we owe to those who lived so closely with nature.
Kaali Crater: Touching the Cosmos
After immersing ourselves in the charm of Angla, we ventured to the Kaali kraater, a site of immense geological and historical significance. The Kaali crater is not just a physical landmark; it's a place steeped in mystery and legend. Formed by a meteorite impact thousands of years ago, the crater has been a source of fascination and awe for centuries.

As we walked towards the main crater, I could feel a palpable sense of energy in the air. The main crater, now a serene lake, is surrounded by smaller craters, each a testament to the cosmic event that shaped this landscape. The impact is estimated to have occurred sometime between 1530–1450 BC. Imagine the spectacle, the sheer force of nature, and the impact it had on the people living here at the time. It’s no wonder that the site is shrouded in mythology.
According to some researchers, the impact may have triggered a mega-tsunami event and violent seismotectonics in Sweden. Ancient legends testify to direct observations of the sky phenomena and personal experiences of the ground shaking and tsunami flooding, which makes the Kaali Crater the oldest impact event documented by humans. It’s fascinating to think that this event could be mixed into ancient legends.
Standing at the edge of the crater, I tried to imagine the fiery meteor streaking across the sky, the earth-shattering impact, and the aftermath that followed. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of our place in the vastness of the universe. The site felt sacred, as if the earth itself held a memory of that cataclysmic event. I found myself contemplating the forces that shape our world, both from above and below.
Local Flavors and Evening Reflections
For lunch, we stopped at PÖIDE GRILLHOUSE, where we enjoyed some hearty grilled dishes. Markus had the pork ribs, and I opted for the grilled fish, both of which were cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was a delightful break in our day of exploration, and the food provided the perfect fuel for the afternoon ahead. The Pöide Grillhouse is known for its local ingredients and traditional recipes.

As evening approached, we made our way to Lümanda söögimaja for dinner, seeking an authentic taste of Saaremaa. This cozy inn is renowned for its traditional Estonian dishes, prepared with local ingredients and a whole lot of love. I tried the kama, a traditional dish made from roasted grains, while Markus savored the local fish. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and comforting. It felt like stepping into someone's home for a family meal.

The inn itself was charming, with rustic décor and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff were incredibly welcoming, eager to share stories about the island and its culinary traditions. It’s these personal connections that make travel so enriching.
To cap off the evening, we decided to visit John Bull Pub for a nightcap. The pub was lively, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the late hours. We ordered some local craft beers and soaked in the atmosphere, listening to the chatter and laughter around us. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, mystery, and natural beauty.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Sõrve Lighthouse and Tuhkana beach and recreation area. I’m particularly excited about visiting the lighthouse, as I’ve always been drawn to these beacons of light and hope. And of course, a relaxing day at the beach sounds like the perfect way to unwind after our adventures today.
As I write this, back at our campsite, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Saaremaa has a way of captivating the soul, of connecting you to the past, and of reminding you of the beauty and wonder of the natural world. It’s a place where windmills whisper stories of resilience, where craters echo cosmic events, and where every meal is a celebration of local flavors and traditions. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I’m also grateful for the company of my friends on this trip. Sharing these experiences with loved ones makes them all the more meaningful. Whether we’re exploring ancient sites, savoring local cuisine, or simply enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, it’s the bonds we share that make these moments truly special.
